50Th Annual NORTHERN CALIFORNIA AREA EMMY® AWARDS NOMINATIONS ANNOUNCED 1 50th Annual NORTHERN CALIFORNIA AREA EMMY® AWARDS NOMINATIONS ANNOUNCED The San Francisco/Northern California Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences has announced nominations for its 50th Annual Gala. The Emmy® award is presented for outstanding achievement in television. San Francisco/ Northern California is one of the nineteen chapters awarding regional Emmy® statuettes. Northern California is composed of media companies and individuals from Visalia to the Oregon border and includes Hawaii, Reno, NV and Guam. Entries aired during the 2020 calendar year. This year the contest received 765 English entries in 68 categories. The Spanish contest received 195 entries in 34 categories. A minimum of seven judges from other NATAS chapters scored each entry on a scale from 1 to 10 for Content, Creativity and Execution. Craft categories were judged on Creativity and Execution only. The total score was divided by the number of judges. The mean score was sorted from highest to lowest in each category. The Chapter Awards Committee looked at scores, not knowing the category, and determined cut off numbers for nominations and recipients. In the English contest KNTV NBC Bay Area received 30 nominations followed by KXTV 10 with 24. In the Spanish contest KUVS Univision 19 received 19 followed by KSTS Telemundo 48 with 13 each. The top three Individual honor went to: Maikel D’Agostino, Photographer/Editor at KUVS Univision 19 with 15; Jonathan Bloom, Video Journalist, KNTV NBC Bay Ara had ten; and Luis Godinez, News Director, KUVS Univision 19, and AJ Rivvers, Director, Golden State Warriors with Seven. The two contests generated 242 entries Nominations, with 195 in English and 47 for Spanish. The Acdemy will award 831 Nomination Certificates to 488 individusls. Due to continuing COVID-19, the June 5th Emmy® Gala will again be a livestream webcast, with viewers watching from their homes. The Academy asks nominees to submit 45-second recipient videos. We recommend a 15-second entry except with a 30-second acceptance speech, but nominees may divide the time as they see fit. When the envelope is opened, we will show the recipient’s video excerpt and speech. Nominees will receive a separate e-mail with video upload instructions. The dual webcast on Saturday, June 5th begins at 6:30pm at emmysf.tv. There will be a cocktail reception on Zoom assuming you provide your own. The Awards Ceremony will start at 7pm on the other screen. The Red Carpet Zoom party will continue on the second screen throughout the evening. It will include an after party when we can celebrate with all our nominees and recipients. (Craft categories were judged on Creativity and Execution only). The total score was divided by the number of judges. The mean score was sorted from highest to lowest in each category. The Chapter Awards Committee looked at blind scores (not knowing the category) and decided on the cut off number for nominations and recipients. In the English contest KNTV NBC Bay Area received 27 nominations. The Spanish contest KUVS Univision 19 received 28. Individual honors went to Luis Godínez, Assistant News Director, KDTV Univision 14, San Francisco received ten nominations. The EMMY® Award is presented for outstanding achievement in television by The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS). San Francisco/ Northern California is one of the nineteen chapters awarding regional Emmy® statues. Northern California is composed of media companies and individuals from Visalia to the Oregon border and includes Hawaii and Reno, Nevada. Entries aired during the 2020 calendar year. A total of 912 entries were received, 765 English and 195 Spanish in 68 English Categories and 34 Spanish Categories. Nominations were announced on May 5th with 195 English and 76 Spanish. Electronic ballots were submitted by a minimum of seven peer judges from other NATAS chapters and were sent directly to our accountant. The Spanish and English awards are judged and scored separately and then presented at the ceremony. 353 Emmy® statues were handed out to 263 individuals. The top two recipients were Maikel D'Agostino, Photograpoher/Editor, KUVS Unvision 19, Sacramento with ten, and Jonathan Bloom, Video Journalist, KNTV NBC Bay Area, with Six. The Emmy® is awarded to individuals but there is a lot of interest in the station counts: KNTV NBC Bay Area took home 16 for the English contest and KUVS Univision 19 with 12 for the Spanish contest. The overall Excellence Emmy® awards went to KNTV NBC Bay Area, English and KUVS Univision 19, Spanish. The prestigious Governors’ Award, the highest honor a regional chapter can award was presented to Wayne Freedman, Reporter, KGO ABC 7, San Francisco.
