Village News Spring Edition 2021 May 2021 www.lowerkingswood.co.uk Change in the Village As we start to exit the pandemic, as individuals and as a community, we can reflect on both the challenges and changes it has caused. The Lower Kingswood Residents’ Association (LKRA) has not been immune to change; as will be highlighted in this Newsletter, our Chairman and Secretary have stood down. Currently, Ian Floyd is Acting as our Chairman and Gill Utting as Secretary; these positions will be reviewed at the next AGM. Covid rules have changed how everyone interacts; like others, we have all had to learn how to use Zoom and other internet connecting programmes effectively. However, this challenge has not stopped LKRA from working on behalf of the village and its residents. Since our last Newsletter, we have been busy assisting residents with many challenges during the pandemic, offering support to organisations such as the British Legion, who celebrate their 100th anniversary this year, and we have recently started working with other Resident Associations to launch a project to improve our local green space and create a 'Green Corridor' from the M25 to . See page 8 for more information on this, including how people can get involved going forwards.

This new normal has prevented us from communicating with residents through our regular Newsletter. Going forward, we aim to review its format, and we welcome any suggestions on what is required in a community Newsletter. Currently we are also looking to modernise the website and if anyone has the skills and time to assist us please get in touch via the contact section of the website. We have a limited budget and would consider both commercial and voluntary offers. Another challenge of lockdown has been holding public meetings; with the rules starting to be relaxed, we hope to hold our Annual General Meeting (AGM) as soon as possible after 21st June. At present, we are seeking to secure the Church Hall for 30th June, but at this time, they are unable to confirm its availability. We will update residents as soon as we can. It is hoped that as many residents as possible will attend to raise issues they consider important and help us decide LKRA's future direction and how LKRA can improve its communication with residents.

In recent months we saw a temporary but fundamental change in our children’s education. We want to thank all residents who donated electronic devices to assist those who do not have ready access to computers and to local companies such as Fidelity and their staff, who have been working hard with the community to refurbish and distribute those donated.

Finally, change is also coming to our County Councillor representation regardless of the election result; both Bob Gardner and Jeff Harris will be standing down after many years of service to our community. May we take this opportunity to thank both for their help and assistance. Lower Kingswood Residents’ Association We very much Acting Chairman Ian Floyd appreciate the support Acting Secretary Gill Utting of our advertisers but Treasurer Faye Miles their appearance in our Babylon Lane Ruth Jones newsletter and/or our Beechen Lane Jackie Cox website does not Beechen Lane Tracey Godwin To contact LKRA please use the constitute a Dents Grove Stella Rixon website Contact Us page on recommendation. Greenacres Belinda Harrington www.lowerkingswood.co.uk Holly Lodge Mike Baker THANK YOU to the Lower Kingswood Residents’ Association Chairman and Secretary The Lower Kingswood Residents’ Association (LKRA) said thank you to David Patel and Bob Brown who as Chairman and Secretary respectively have steered the LKRA for about 20 years. David and Bob decided the time had come to retire. David has been at the hub of village life being the newsagent and postmaster, posts he has recently retired from. The LKRA committee received contributions from residents towards a retirement gift for each of them. The plan was to make a presentation at the 2020 AGM, however due to Covid-19 this wasn’t possible. Instead each was presented with a gift outside the Post Office on Tuesday, 15th December at 12noon at a socially distanced ceremony. County Councillor Bob Gardner made the presentations giving a short and amusing appreciation of them both saying that they will have seen many changes over the 20 years. Bob said that their unwavering support has been crucial to keeping the residents together as a village and making the village a place where people chose to make their home. There is a unique quality that new and old residents never want to leave. He concluded with “thankyou David and Bob; words cannot describe how grateful we are for your many years’ service to our LKRA”. We are grateful too to our local photographer, Rachel Thornhill for recording this occasion.

Kingswood W.I.

Singing Happy Birthday to ourselves on March 10th proved to be hilarious on Zoom. With everyone’s internet travelling at different speeds, no-one in sync, what fun it was. I t just had to be done however, as it was Kingswood WI’s 90th Birthday. The Committee delivered a Cream Tea to every member. Lovely scones, jam and clotted cream, which we all ate at same time on Zoom. Delicious and a lot of fun. Marjorie Knight has been a member for 56 of those 90 years. What a lot of changes throughout those 90 years she must have seen. Although we no longer wear hats to the meetings, we still raise our voices to a rousing chorus of Jerusalem, make jam, chutney, delicious cakes, but on top of all our crafting activities we can surf the net, use our iPhones, iPads, and get on to Zoom for our meetings and to join in lectures from Surrey Federation and our WI Denman college. Having so many WI friends in the village has meant we can stand and chat from our front doors or go for a walk with one other person out in our beautiful countryside right on our doorstep. It keeps us fit and in touch with our friends. With Spring on its way our gardens are flourishing and with the rule of six we can now meet in our gardens and admire our handiwork. Our local WI is thriving, and we hope to return to all our activities very soon. If you are interested in joining our WI in Lower Kingswood. Under normal conditions we meet every second Wednesday at The Church Hall in Buckland Road at 2:15pm. Please contact our president.

Lower Kingswood Lower Kingswood Residents’ Village Fete Association is aware of a number of flying-tipping incidents in the village recently, especially several in Stubbs Lane near the Recycling Centre. The Cubs have particularly enjoyed the cooking challenges and have also enjoyed zoom sessions on origami, Lego building, painting, wellbeing boxes and even an escape room! A small group of our Cubs were very proud to represent the whole Reigate District in the Surrey Cubs County Quiz Final in February. In the meantime we are planning a virtual camp during the Easter holiday, complete with campfire.

This term Beavers have continued with online meetings, and enjoying learning new skills for the challenge badge. We’ve played lots of games showing initiative, learnt about exercise and healthy eating, and cooked mug cakes! And we’ve had two online investitures too.

Scouting is continuing to review its ability to safely re commence face to face activities across its Beaver and Cubs. We have had to make substantial changes to our anticipated programmes and hopefully some of these restrictions will soon be relaxed so that we can meet in person again.

The Group, supported by Cllr Rod Ashford and Cllr Jamie Paul, has been successful in its recent application for a Small Grant from the Borough Council which has been put to good use on essential repairs to our Scout Hut during March. https://www.9threigate.org.uk/join/ or [email protected] If you have children and young people who would like to join in the adventures

Lower Kingswood Village News Page 5 Spring 2021 www.lowerkingswood.co.uk Kingswood Primary School

2021 started with another lockdown which meant Kingswood had to put its remote learning plan into action, as well as supporting about 35-40% of (vulnerable and critical worker) children in school - this was a challenge and a balancing act for staff. Schools’ core purpose is all about ‘learning’ and teaching learners to become resilient- this was also very true for the staff when it came to teaching virtually for the first time. Within a week, all teachers were teaching live sessions at least daily, with many small groups being set up to support specific children. Regular contact with families allowed the teachers to keep a close eye on pupils’ engagement in their learning, as well as find out about the children’s general well-being at home. The parents/carers were so supportive and did their very best to help their children in what were very trying circumstances for them as many were having to juggle jobs, carry out the usual household chores, care for other siblings etc. The children really tried their hardest and the amount of work produced and levels of engagement were very good. I know from parent feedback, the highlight and key motivator was seeing their classmates and teachers live on screens each day On the 8th March, all the children returned to school and this was fantastic to see - they were so happy to be back and to see their friends and teachers. Despite some being a little tired initially, they have settled back so quickly and have been really focusing on their learning. Let us hope that the rest of the academic year is uninterrupted and the outlook becomes more positive. Duncan Steele Headteacher

The Wisdom of God Church

The Wisdom of God Church will be open once again for public worship on Sunday 18th April at 9.30am but a recording of that service will also go online on our You Tube channel. This services can also be found via our website:

Of course we had another Easter but we were able to find ways in which to make it meaningful and celebratory once again. It is perhaps worth reminding you that The Wisdom of God Church is open for private prayer on Wednesdays between 10-11am. Also, our churches are still available for funeral services however small these gathering may have to be. As summer emerges and the days grow longer, I pray that we will all find some respite from the dismal winter months we’ve just been through and that our spirits will be lifted as the warmer weather arrives. Lower Kingswood Village News Page 7 Spring 2021 www.lowerkingswood.co.uk Green Corridors in Lower Kingswood, Tadworth and Walton can you help!

Green Corridors is a new local project. We are joining with Tadworth & Walton Residents Association (TWRA) to initially carry out a survey of hedgerows in the area. Teams will go out with maps and a form for each boundary and record the current situation. The work would be done from public rights of way. Training will be provided, via Zoom, by the Tree Council. We understand that Reigate and Banstead Council will kindly provide the O.S. maps. If you would like to be part of this survey team, please contact Gillian Hein, of TWRA.

This work is part of a bigger project in our locality. We are fortunate to live in an area of beautiful countryside. We feel that it is important to try and reverse the decline in the number of flora and fauna species, a trend which is being experienced across Surrey and nationwide. We also want to try to improve the linkages between areas of wildlife so that there can be more movement between important habitats. We now feel that there is something we can do to enhance local wildlife and help ward off the effects of climate change by more tree planting and facilitating the movement of species. This can be achieved by enhancing and creating ‘green corridors’ comprising linear groups of trees, hedgerows and grassy field margin.

As many residents and travellers alike will have noticed, we have a third Remembrance Silent Soldier sited on the A217; this one is near the Holly Lodge entrance. This representation of a 'Tommy' reinforces our tribute to the military personnel who give so much in service to their country both in wartime and in peace. We all remember and salute their heroic action in wartime but let us also remember that our Armed Services support the UK in meeting various peacetime challenges. They provide vital support at the scene of natural disasters, stepped in to assist at the 2012 Olympics, and currently support our NHS.

In addition to our permanent Silent Soldiers for the next few weeks, you will see Poppies returning to the lampposts on the A217; in collaboration with our neighbouring Resident Associations, we hope to create a display to honour the 100th anniversary of the Royal British Legion. The British Legion was created on the 15th May 1921, bringing together four separate ex-Servicemen organisations to assist veterans and the families of service members who were lost or disabled during the First World war. It should never be forgotten that six million British servicemen served in WW1; of those that returned, at least 1.75 million were disabled and many more families became financially desperate, having lost their principal wage earner.

The British Legion adopted the Poppy as their symbol of Remembrance in 1921 at the suggestion of Anna Guérin. The first poppy appeal raised £106.000 (5.21m in 2021 value); in 2019, the Poppy Appeal raised over £55m, and in total, the Royal British Legion has raised over £3b since its inception. The women's section of the British Legion was formed in September 1921, and currently, there are over 5,200 branches across the UK. Although The British Legion has received royal support since its formation, it didn't become The Royal British Legion until its golden anniversary in 1971.

The Royal British Legion has, for the last 100 years, raised money to care for and assist members of our Armed Forces and their families: long may they continue.

We would like to thank Bob Gardner our then Surrey County Councillor for providing the funding, via the Members' Community Allocation, for this third Silent Soldier and the missing Silent Soldier on the Babylon Lane roundabout. We’d also like to thank Bob, Jeff Harris & Ian Floyd for installing them. Evangelical Church

The Crown Christian Heritage Trust are exploring the possibilities of a new church plant being started with the friends of the Lower Kingswood Evangelical Church. God willing, we will begin holding services twice a month from Easter Sunday.

Please join with us in praying that the Lord will bless this endeavour and that many from the local community will be greatly encouraged and helped by this new work.

All are welcome and if there is anyway we can be of service, please let us know.

William Heinemann, a publisher and founder of The Windmill Press, had a long friendship with Francis Nelson Doubleday, a fellow publisher in New York. However Heinemann died suddenly leaving his partner Sidney Pawling having to decide what to do with the business. Pawling approached Doubleday, a friend of Heinemann, to consider buying Heinemann’s controlling interest. This appealed to Doubleday who agreed to finance the business with whatever capital was needed much to Pawling’s satisfaction and relief but he told Doubleday if it became known an American owned the business it would ruin the enterprise. This was tough on Doubleday but they came to an understanding and before returning to New York he gave assurance by legally binding himself to the takeover. Pawling, Heinemann’s partner for twenty-two years was very skilled in the knowledge of bookselling and was responsible for acceptance of D.H.Lawrence’s first book The White Peacock. However Pawling died two years later leaving Doubleday in overall full ownership of the whole enterprise. At this point it became known who was the new owner, an American business. At first there was scepticism among the employees and an antagonistic attitude by some authors who little relished the idea of working for an American. However in a short while Doubleday established confidence and friendship throughout the business at Bedford Street, London although he credited his managers for this. He raised salaries and improved working conditions without any reduction of staff or the imposition of outside officials, least of all those with transatlantic origins. In 1925 Doubleday mentioned his ideas of buying a large country house and setting up a small Private Press to produce very fine and beautiful books. He learned that 80 people spent 2½ hours travelling to and from work each day. He thought this was a waste of time, money and strength and that a larger enterprise might be an advantage, based on his experience of his Garden city on Long Island. The Directors reaction was favourable and immediate and contrary to his expectations. Plans emerged for a factory at Banstead (later the first site of Waitrose) but ran into trouble with a planning refusal by the local council. Another site was found at Chipstead Lane, Lower Kingswood. Thirty acres were purchased and architects Lord Gerald Wellesley and Trenwith Wills, produced drawings of the mellowed brick Georgian-style building, unparalleled at that time by any other factory in this country. On 21st May 1928 with much ceremony the Windmill Press was opened by John Galsworthy named after the Heinemann symbol based on the engraving of Rottingdean Windmill, Sussex, by William Nicholson. The ambition was fulfilled with compositors, printers and book binders all living alongside in houses specially developed by Costains in Beechen Lane and Chipstead Lane. Shortly after, the Wall Street crash occurred and the New York business was hit hard and money had to be found in order to survive. Doubleday was forced to sell Heinemann’s but a final act of consideration was made to ensure his young managers and directors should benefit from an opportunity to buy the company. With help from the Winterbottom Trust and arrangements he had made for bank loans they were able to purchase the total stockholding, with repayment deductions being made through their monthly salaries. The company prospered until the outbreak of the Second World War when production was disrupted and output fell. The building narrowly missed damage by high explosive bombs but the many workers called up for the armed forces, together with paper shortages, inevitably affected essential production. Later, part of the building became a segregated high security area after its takeover by a detachment of Royal Engineers. They were involved in top secret work, producing maps etc. in readiness for the D-Day Normandy landings in June 1944. After the war production picked up again, further wings were added to the original building and opened by Somerset Maugham in 1952 and others in 1966 by JB.Priestley. By the end of the sixties, one by one a string of outside publishers had taken over until 1987 when the “Press” as it was fondly referred to locally, finally closed. The frontage has since been altered and three extra buildings added by the present owner, Fidelity International. Abridged version of an article by Ray Strank
