If you know of anyone in the Carey community – including past and current students, parents and staff, female or male – who have given exceptional and outstanding service to the wider community either within the state, nationwide or internationally, please consider nominating them for recognition with the Carey Medal. The last edition of Torch featured an article celebrating the achievements of a number of Carey female cricketers. We apologise for any concern caused regarding the title of the article, which some members of the community felt was inappropriate. The title, which was an editorial inclusion (and not written by the article’s author David Rimington), was well-intended and aimed to highlight and celebrate the achievements of women in sport. We met with David Rimington to apologise for not seeking his approval for this title, and to agree on how best to communicate a response to the concerns raised. Please note the title was changed for the online version of Torch. We regret any concern this has caused and would like to emphasise how much Carey values the sporting achievements of all members of our school community, irrespective of gender. • Propaganda and Military Celebrity in First World War Australia
THE ENDURING IMPACT OF THE FIRST WORLD WAR A collection of perspectives Edited by Gail Romano and Kingsley Baird The Politics of Heroism: Propaganda and Military Celebrity in First World War Australia Bryce Abraham Australian War Memorial Abstract Afghanistan veteran Ben Roberts-Smith is one of the most well-known faces of modern conflict in Australia. The decorated special forces soldier is frequently at the forefront of commemorative initiatives, has become a spokesman for health and sport, and is popularly portrayed as the embodiment of the modern ‘Anzac’. But Roberts-Smith’s social currency as a hero is not a recent phenomenon. It has its origins in 1917, when decorated soldiers were first used to advertise the war effort. This was a tumultuous year for Australians deeply embroiled in the First World War. A failed conscription plebiscite—and another looming—and increasing devastation on the battlefield had led to a growing sense of war weariness. Amidst this discontent, the State Parliamentary Recruiting Committee of Victoria launched the Sportsmen’s Thousand, an army recruitment initiative designed to encourage the enlistment of athletic men. The posters released for the campaign featured a portrait of a fit, young uniformed man—Lieutenant Albert Jacka, an accomplished sportsman and decorated ‘war hero’. The Sportsmen’s Thousand used Jacka to invoke the connection between masculinity and heroism by suggesting that talent on the sports field would translate to prowess on the field of battle, just as it had for Jacka. This article explores how ‘heroes’ like Jacka were increasingly used in Australian war propaganda and recruitment initiatives from 1917 to inspire enlistment and promote a sense of loyalty to the war effort.

THE DORSET CRICKET YEAR BOOK 2013 Martinstown CC Under Water Photo Supplied By: Jim Godding 1 DORSET CRICKET BOARD – DORSET COUNTY CRICKET CLUB – DORSET CRICKET LEAGUE THE DORSET CRICKET YEAR BOOK 2013 2 THE DORSET CRICKET YEAR BOOK 2013 Editorial First of all I would like to welcome you to the first ever digitalised edition of ‘The Dorset Cricket Yearbook’. I’m sure you would agree quite a ground breaking moment, as another aspect of life gives in to the ever growing power of the technological age. It is quite an honour for myself, a Bournemouth University placement student, to be so heavily involved in the production of what I have been told is an extremely popular publication within Dorset Cricket. And so it should be. Previous editions of the yearbook have acted as a template for the format of this year’s publication; however I have noticed that this is not where their purpose ends. Each edition published adds to the vast archive of records, statistics, photographs and memories I believe dating back to the early 1970s and beyond. A true collectible for the people of Dorset. It has also been discussed that previous version will be converted to digitalised copies like this one; however that is another job for another day! As you make your way through the yearbook, you will undoubtedly notice a recurring theme throughout; the Great British weather. As 2012 has recently been declared the wettest year since records began (and what a record breaking first year that was may I add), it’s a surprise that as much cricket got played as it did.
