Course Description (AM) Dr. Miller, who has served as an expert witness for the past 10 years, will lead this course update regarding risk management in dentistry. Emphasis is on patient care issues, diagnosis, documentation, guidelines, standards of care and regulations. In today’s litigious society, managing risk is of concern to all . Attendees of this morning course will hear scenarios that involved patient complaints, and learn effective ways to protect their patients and practice by becoming informed of the following topic

• Risk Management • Pre-treatment, diagnosis, treatment planning and clinical issues • Standards of care, practice and evidence-based guidelines • Record keeping and documentation • Regulations and legal issues

At the conclusion of the morning session, the participant should be able to: • Recognize and assess areas of risk involving office guidelines, regulations, diagnosis, medical care, treatment planning and record keeping. • Recognize the importance of communication, treatment planning and informed consent. • Understand how concepts of standards of care, best practices and evidence-based guidelines impact the practice of dentistry and how to incorporate these concepts into daily dental practice. • Develop and implement checklists and protocols for minimizing risk and the consequences of adverse events. • Know how to plan and deliver safe and effective dental care to patients with medical conditions and medically compromised patients so as to promote oral health and overall health, and minimize medico- legal risk. • Implement record keeping practices that enhance patient care and reduce patient complaints and malpractice risks.

Course Description (PM) Dr. Miller, who has taught oral medicine for 26 years and authored 3 internationally acclaimed textbooks in Oral Medicine, will lead this course update regarding the actions and interactions of drugs commonly prescribed in the United States, common oral lesions, and conditions that cause pain and discomfort. Emphasis is on patient care issues, with clinical examples of indications for use of commonly prescribed drugs, common problems encountered with these drugs, and clinical examples of drug-induced oral lesions, common oral lesions, symptomatic oral conditions, and common treatment remedies.

Learning Objectives At the conclusion of the afternoon session, the participant should be able to: • Understand the actions and selection of commonly prescribed . • Recognize common drug interactions and adverse drug effects. • Implement methods for prevention of drug interactions and adverse drug effects. • Recognize and identify common oral lesions, both clinically and radiographically. • Recognize conditions that cause pain in the orofacial complex. • Provide treatment for common oral lesions and conditions that cause pain in the orofacial complex. • Understand standards of care with respect to diagnosis and use of medications in dentistry.

Instructor Craig S. Miller, DMD, MS, is Professor of Oral Medicine, Microbiology, & Molecular Genetics at the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry and College of Medicine and is the editor of the Oral Medicine Section of Oral , Oral Medicine, Oral , Oral and Endodontics. He has more than 160 scientific articles, textbook chapters, and monographs in the areas of oral viral , dental management and oral manifestations of systemic disease, and dental pharmacology and is well known for the three textbooks he has co-authored: The Color Atlas of Common Oral Diseases, Oral Diagnosis, Oral Medicine and Treatment Planning, and Dental Management of the Medically Compromised Patient. He is the Past-President of the American Academy of Oral Medicine and the Oral Medicine & Pathology Group in the American Association of Dental Research.

Refund Policy A full refund, less a $25 processing fee, will be issued for all cancellations received in writing two weeks prior to the course date. A 50% refund less a $25 processing fee will be given for cancellations received in writing one week prior to the course date, with no refund thereafter. Refunds cannot be given for cancellations on or after the course starting date. Please note that a written request must be received before a refund may be processed. Registrants may choose to receive a full tuition credit toward another course.

Cancellation Policy UK College of Dentistry Continuing Education reserves the right to cancel or modify a course when circumstances warrant, including insufficient enrollment. Dates, faculty or course content will be changed only when unavoidable. If a course has been cancelled, participants will be notified and a refund will be issued. Continuing Dental Education cannot be responsible for non- refundable airfare or other expenses in the event of a course cancellation.
