Updates & Amendments to the Great R&B Files
Updates & Amendments to the Great R&B Files The R&B Pioneers Series edited by Claus Röhnisch from August 2019 – on with special thanks to Thomas Jarlvik The Great R&B Files - Updates & Amendments (page 1) John Lee Hooker Part II There are 12 books (plus a Part II-book on Hooker) in the R&B Pioneers Series. They are titled The Great R&B Files at http://www.rhythm-and- blues.info/ covering the history of Rhythm & Blues in its classic era (1940s, especially 1950s, and through to the 1960s). I myself have used the ”new covers” shown here for printouts on all volumes. If you prefer prints of the series, you only have to printout once, since the updates, amendments, corrections, and supplementary information, starting from August 2019, are published in this special extra volume, titled ”Updates & Amendments to the Great R&B Files” (book #13). PERFORMERS Curtis Mayfield and the Impressions BY J O E M cE W E N from the union of two friends, Jerry Butler and Curtis Mayfield of Chicago, Illinois. The two had sung together in church as adolescents, and had traveled with the Northern Jubilee Gospel Singers and the Traveling Souls Spiritual Church. It was Butler who con vinced his friend Mayfield to leave his own struggling group, the Alfatones, and join him, Sam Gooden, and brothers Richard and Arthur Brooks— the remnants of another strug gling vocal group called the Roosters. According to legend, an impressive performance at Major Lance, Walter Jackson, and Jan Bradley; he also a Chicago fashion show brought the quintet to the at wrote music that seemed to speak for the entire civil tention of Falcon Records, and their debut single was rights movement. TEG 74001 MUDDY WATERS Unk in Funk CD
MUDDY WATERS “UNK” IN FUNK 1. Rollin’ And Tumblin’ 2. Just To Be With You 3. Electric Man 4. Trouble No More 5. “Unk” In Funk 6. Drive My Blues Away 7. Katie 8. Waterboy Waterboy 9. Everything Gonna Be Alright "Unk" In Funk, Muddy Waters' 1974 release, saw the Chicago bluesman further building on the electric blues of albums like Electric Mud (1968) and After The Rain (1969). It would be one of the last collections of original material that Waters would record with Chess Records, after a nearly 30-year association with the label. The record included a core line up of famed blues players who would remain Waters' backing band for the duration of his career, featuring Pinetop Perkins on piano, (Earl Hooker) Luther Johnson (The Nighthawks) and Bob Margolin on guitar, Calvin "Fuzz" Jones on bass, (The Legendary Blues Band) and Willie "Big Eyes" Smith on drums, (Bo Diddley, John Lee Hooker) with additional guest appearances by George Buford, Paul Oscher (Louisiana Red), and Carey Bell (Willie Dixon) on harmonica. Even at the age of 61, Waters sounds at the top of his game on "Unk" In Funk. His booming, powerful blues vocals dominate the album's fuzzy, electric orchestration. Overhauled versions of Waters classics like "Rollin' and Tumblin'" and "Just To Be With You" sound fresh as ever, and newer tracks like "Katie" and "Waterboy, Waterboy" are classic and organic additions to Waters' discography. Overlooked and underrated in its time, "Unk" In Funk is a pinnacle album from Waters' catalog. Format: CD Cat. No: TEG74001-CD Label: Traffic Entertainment Group Available: AUGUST 13th, 2013 CHESS CD. -

Big Walter Horton, Blues Harmonica Giant, Classic Sides 1951-1956 (3 CD) Di Bear Family, Uscito Nel 2010, Dopo La Stesura Di Questo Documento
John Lee Hooker 1991.Pdf
PERFORMERS John Lee Hooker BY JOHN M I L W A R D H E BLUES ACCORDING TO John Lee Hooker is a propulsive drone of a guitar tuned to open G, a foot stomping out a beat that wouldn’t know how to quit, and a bear of a voice that knows its way around the woods. He plays big-city, big-beat blues born in the Mississippi Delta. Blame it on the boogie, and you’re blaming it on John Lee Hooker. Without the music of John Lee Hooker, Jim Morrison two dozen labels, creating one of the most confusing wouldn’t have known of crawling kingsnakes, and George discographies in blues history. Hooker employed such Thorogood wouldn’t have ordered up “One Bourbon, One pseudonyms as Texas Slim, Birmingham Sam, Delta John, Scotch, One Beer.” Van Morrison would not have influenced John Lee Booker, and Boogie Man. Most of his rhythm & generations of rock singers by personalizing the idiosyncratic blues hits appeared on Vee jay Records, including “Crawlin’ emotional landscape of Hooker’s fevered blues. Kingsnake,” "No Shoes,” and “Boom Boom”—John Lee’s sole Hooker inspired these and countless other boogie chil entry on the pop singles chart, in 1962. dren with blues that don’t In the late ’50s, Hooker adhere to a strict 12-bar T H E BLUES ALONE found a whole new audience structure, but move in re Detroit businessman Bernard Besman (in partnership with club owner Lee among the white fans of the sponse to the singer’s singu Sensation) issued John Lee Hooker’s first records in 1948 on the Sensation la folk revival. -
The Matthew Skoller Band Biography
THE MATTHEW SKOLLER BAND BIOGRAPHY One of the hardest working harmonica-based blues groups in Chicago, The Matthew Skoller Band rocks with a fierceness not felt since the likes of blues harp icons Little Walter and Sonny Boy Williamson II. Skoller and his band of veteran musicians are at the forefront of a new generation who’ve come up schooled in Chicago's world-renowned and highly competitive blues scene. The Skoller Band’s latest CD is These Kind of Blues! , produced by Matthew and Larry Skoller and Vincent Bucher for Skoller’s own Tongue ‘N Groove label. The album features seven new original songs, plus covers of songs by Junior Parker, James Cotton and Jimmy Reed. Niles Frantz, host of Comin' Home on WBEZ 91.5 FM, Chicago writes, These Kind of Blues! is a powerful album that needs to be heard. It is full of top-notch, yet understated playing by great, experienced, young Chicago bluesmen. They dazzle with feel, precision and succinctness, not flash. But what sets this album apart is Skoller's songwriting. Not since the old days have I heard such passionate, straight-from-the-heart expression in blues lyrics. The French blues magazine Soul Bag adds, “Matthew Skoller does not hide his admiration for Sonny Boy Williamson or Walter Horton -- both major influences -- but he adds his own personal touch wrought with lyricism, a sense of melody and an advanced technique.” HISTORY As with many blues performers of his generation, Skoller’s been influenced as much by Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Jimi Hendrix and the Allman Brothers as by the legends of blues. -
