ﺍﺣﺘﻔﺎﻻﺕ ﺃﻋﻴﺎﺩ ﺍﻟﻤﻴﻼﺩ ﺍﻟﻤﺠﻴﺪﺓ ﺑﻴﺖ ﻟﺤﻢ ٢٠١٦/٢٠١٧

1 رسالة امليالد برحمتــه نَ َف َ ــخفينــا احليــاة ووجهنــا نحــو خيــر العالــم، ْفنــوكل ُج َّــل ِحياتنــا إلــى رحمتــه التــي تُعطــي ُالط مأنينــةوالســام والعــدل، ويف ميــاد طفــل املغــارة، الطفــل يســوع، تتجلى هــذه الرحمــة، ليكــون شــعارنا هــذا العــام » الرحمــة هــي روح عيــد امليــاد«. مــا أحوجنــا، وخاصــة يف عالــم اليــوم، إلــى الرحمــة، التــي »تُقيمنــا إلــى ٍحيــاة جديــدة، ُوتبعــث الشــجاعة اللزمــة للتطلّــع نحــو املســتقبل بأمــل« كمــا يُشــير قداســة البابــا فرنســيس، لنعيــش حيــاة تنتهــي فيهــا احلــروب والصراعــات، ويكــون عنوانهــا الســام الــذي تطمــح لــه اإلنســانية جمعــاء، وتَبــدأ، عندمــا ّنفكــر بغيرنــا.

ّ»فكــر بغيــرك«، يقــول محمــود درويــش، فهــذا هــو أســاس الرحمــة احلقيقيــة، ويُضيــف »وأنــت تخــوض حروبــك، ّفكــر بغيــرك، ال َتنــس َمــن يطلبــون الســام«، ّلنفكــر باألطفــال الذيــن يقعــون ضحايــا احلــروب، والعائــات التــي تُ ّهجــر وتُ ّشــرد مــن أرضهــا، واألوطــان التــي تُ َّدمــر، هنــا تَ ُكمــن قســاوة احلــرب، وبســببها تَ َهــدم االنســانية ونفقــد علمــات الرحمــة يف احليــاة؛ ّلنفكــر بغيرنــا، نُكســيهم َثــوب حــب ومنــأ القلــوب بالرجــاء، لنكــون، كمــا يقــول القديــس فرنســيس األســيزي، ً »أداةللســام«، نعيــش احلــب واملغفــرة واالحتــاد والفــرح فيمــا بيننــا، حينهــا فقــط، نحيــا بــروح وعيــد امليــاد.

ويف فلســطني، أرض الرســاالت الســماوية، التــي علــى ترابهــا ّعم ــراآلبــاء األجــداد، فإننا، ِوبعبــق هــذا املاضــي، ُ نســتمربالبنــاء، بقــوة وعزميــة وثبــات، لتكــون لنــا تلــك احليــاة اجلديــدة، حيــث يعيــشاألبنــاء ٍ مبســتقبلأفضــل، وينتهــي االحتــال؛ وليكــون عــام 2017 عــام إنهــاء االحتــال عــن أرضنــا الفلســطينية، فهــذا العــام لــه رمزيــة خاصــة، فيــه نســتذكر مــرور مئــة عــام علــى وعــد بلفــور، وســبعني عامــا ًعلــى قــرار تقســيم فلســطني، وثلثــني عامــا ًعلــى االنتفاضــة الفلســطينية األولــى، وعشــرة أعــوام علــى االنقســام الفلســطيني الداخلــي؛ نعــم، لقــد َ آناألوان، وليقــف العالــم وقفــة ٍحــق تاريخيــة، تُنهــي معانــاة ٍشــعب ٍّ عربــيفلســطيني يــرى يف امتــداد عروبتــه جــذراً ّهميــد باحليــاة، ووجــوده

2 علــى أرضــه ودفاعــه عــن ّمقدســاتها عنوانــا ًللبقــاء، كمــا يــرى يف االمتــداد العاملــي ألرضــه، أرض الرســاالت الســماوية، تأكيــداًعلــى حتميــة إحقــاق احلــق والعــدل، والعيــش بســام. نعــم، إنهــا فلســطني، قلــب الوطــن العربــي ِ، وروحــهويف زمــن امليــاد هــذا نُ ِرســل رســالة حيــاة ألهلنــا الذيــن يُعانــون يف أنحــاء عديــدة منــه، ّمتوجهــني إلــى طفــل ِاملغــارة بالدعــاء ليكــون عــام 2017 عامــاً ّيحــل فيــه الســام علــى أوطانكــم، ٍبقرارات ٍوأفعال شــجاعة، وأن تعــودوا ألرضكــم ويلتــم شــمل عائلتكــم بعــد جتربــةاللجــوء املريــرة، ونحــن كفلســطينيني أكثــر َمــن نشــعر مبعاناتكــم، َفمــازال ســتة مليــني الجــيء فلســطيني يف العالــم، يحلمــون ِ بالعــودةإلــى وطنهــم، إلــى جانــب املُبعديــن قســراً عــن عائلتهــم، واألســرى الذيــن نتطلّــع جميعــا ًحلريتهــم. يف بيــت حلــم بــدأ ّ كلشــيء، ويف ِاملهــد ٌعنــوان للرحمــة واحليــاة، ومــن تلــك املغــارة الوضيعــة خرجــت رحمــة اهلل لإلنســانية جمعــاء، لتُعطــي األمــل والطمأنينــة ِملَــن هــو محتــاج، فتكــون الرحمــة، بالفعــل، هــي امليــاد. فلســطني وطننــا، وبيــت حلــم مدينتنــا، بيــت حلــم، بيــت يعيــش األمــل، بــروح احملبــة والصمــود ويصلــي لســام عــادل مــن أجــل هــذا الوطــن وشــعبه واإلنســانية جمعــاء.

3 قصة امليالد ﻟﻮﻗﺎ 2 َو ِيف ِذل َــك َّالز َم ِــان، أَ ْص َــد َر الْ َقيْ َص ُــر أُ ُغ ْس ُــط ُس َم ْر ُســوماً يَ ْق ِضــي ِب ِإ ْح َص ِــاء ُس َّــك ِان ِاإل ْم ِب َر ُاط ِور َّيِــة. َو َق ْــد َ َّت َه َــذا ِاإل ْح َصــاء ُاألَ َّو ُل ِعنْ َد َمــا َك َان ِك ِير ِينيُ ُــوس َح ِاكمــاً ِل ُس ِــور َّي َة. َف َذ َه َــب ا ْ َجل ِم ُيــع ِليُ َس َّــجلُوا، ُك ُّل َو ِاح ٍــد ِإلَــى بَلْ َد ِت ِــه. َو َص ِع َــد يُ ُوس ُــف أَيْضــاً ِم ْــن َم ِدينَ ِــة َّالن ِاص َــر ِة ِ ِمبنْ َط َق ِــة ا ْ َجل ِل ِيــل ِإلَــى َم ِدينَ ِــة َد ُاو َد ا ْملَ ْد ُع َّــو ِة بَيْ َــت َ ْحل ٍــم ِ ِمبنْ َط َق ِــة الْيَ ُه ِود َّي ِــة، ألَ َّن ُــه َك َان ِم ْــن بَيْ ِــت َد ُاو َد َو َع ِش َير ِت ِه، ِليَتَ َس َّــج َل ُهنَ َــاك َم َــع َم ْــر َ َي ا ْملَ ْخ ُطوبَ ِــة لَ ُــه، َو ِه َــي ُحبْلَــى. َوبَيْنَ َمــا َكانَــا ُهنَ َــاك، َ َّت َز َمانُ َهــا ِلتَ ِل َــد، َف َولَ َــد ِت ابْنَ َهــا الْ ِب ْك َــر، َولَ َّفتْ ُــه ِب ِق َم ٍــاط، َوأَنَ َامتْ ُــه ِيف ِم ْــذ َو ٍد، ِإ ْذ لَ ْــم يَ ُك ْــن لَ ُه َمــا ُم َّت َس ٌــع ِيف ا ْملَنْ ِــز ِل. َو َك َان ِيف ِتلْ َــك ا ِْملنْ َط َق ِــة ُر َعــاةٌ يَ ِبيتُ َــون ِيف الْ َع َــر ِاء، يَتَنَ َاوبُ َــون ِح َر َاس َــة َق ِط ِيع ِه ْــم ِيف اللَّيْ ِــل. َو ِإ َذا َم َــا ٌك ِم ْــن ِعنْ ِــد َّالــر ِّب َق ْــد َظ َه َــر لَ ُه ْــم، َو َم ْج ُــد َّالــر ِّب أَ َض َــاء َح ْولَ ُه ْــم، َف َخ ُافــوا أَ َش َّــد ْ َال ْــو ِف. َف َق َــال لَ ُه ُــم ا ْملَ َــا ُ :ك »الَ تَ َخ ُافــوا! َف َهــا أَنَــا أُبَ ِّش ُــر ُك ْم ِب َف َــر ٍح َع ِظ ٍيــم يَ ُع ُّــم َّالش ْــع َب ُكلَّ ُــه: َف َق ْــد ُو ِل َــد لَ ُك ُــم الْيَ ْــو َم ِيف َم ِدينَ ِــة َد ُاو َد ُم َخلِّ ٌــص ُه َــو ا ْملَ ِس ُــيح َّالــر ُّب. َو َه ِــذ ِه ِه َــي الْ َع َل َم ُــة لَ ُك ْــم. َ ِجت ُــد َون ِط ْف ًــا َملْ ُفوفــاً ِب ِق َم ٍــاط َونَ ِائمــاً ِيف ِم ْــذ َو ٍد«، َو َف ْج َــأ ًة َظ َه َــر َم َــع ا ْملَ َــا ِك ُج ْم ُه ٌــور ِم َــن َ ا ْ ُجلنْ ِــد َّالس َــم ِاو ِّي، يُ َس ِّــب ُح َون اهلل َق ِائ ِلــ َني: "ا ْملَ ْج ُــد ِ ِهلل ِ يفاألَ َع ِالــي، َو َعلَــى األَ ْر ِض َّالس ُــام؛ َو ِب َّالن ِــاس ا ْملَ َس َّــرةُ!« َو َملَّــا انْ َص َــر َف ا ْملَ َل ِئ َك ُــة َع ِــن ُّالر َع ِــاة ِإلَــى َّالس َــم ِاء، َق َــال بَ ْع ُض ُه ْــم ِلبَ ْع ٍــض: ِ»لنَ ْذ َه ْــب ِإ َذ ْن ِإلَــى بَيْ ِــت َ ْحل ٍــم، َونَنْ ُظ ْــر َه َــذا األَ ْم َــر َّال ِــذي َح َــد َث َو َق ْــد أَ ْعلَ َمنَــا ِب ِــه َّالرب! َو َجــاءُوا ُم ْس ِــر ِع َني، َف َو َج ُــدوا َم ْــر َ َي َويُ ُوس َــف، َو ِّالط ْف َــل نَ ِائمــاً ِيف ا ِْمل ْــذ َو ِد. َفلَ َّمــا َرأَ ْوا ِذل َــك، أَ َخ ُــذوا يُ ْخ ِب ُــر َون ِ َمبــا ِق َيــل لَ ُه ْــم ِب ُخ ُص ِــوص َه َــذا ِّالط ْف ِــل. َو َج ِم ُيع َّال ِذ َين َس ِم ُعوا ِب ِذل َك ُد ِه ُشوا ِ َّما َقالَ ُه لَ ُه ُم ُّالر َعاةُ. َوأَ َّمــا َم ْــر َ ُي، َف َكانَ ْــت َ ْحت َف ُــظ َه ِــذ ِه األُ ُم َــور َج ِميعــاً، َوتَتَ َأ َّملُ َهــا ِيف َقلْ ِب َها. ثُ َّــم َر َج َــع ُّالر َعــاةُ َ ُ َمي ِّجُــد َون اهلل َويُ َس ِّــب ُحونَ ُه َعلَــى ُك ِّل َمــا َس ِــم ُعوهُ َو َرأَ ْوهُ َك َمــا ِق َيــل لَ ُه ْــم.

4 كنيسة املهد تُعتبــر كنيســة املهــد واحــدة مــن أقــدم الكنائــس القائمــة حتــى ِيومنــا هــذا، حيــث بُنيــت الكنيســة األولــى علــى يــد اإلمبراطــور الرومانــي قســطنطني يف القــرن الرابــع امليــادي فــوق املغــارة التــي َولــدت فيهــا مــري َالطفــل يســوع وقــام قســطنطني وأمــه هيلنــة ببنــاء الكنيســة الرائعــة واملهيبــة ّواملزينــة ّبالرخــام والفسيفســاء اجلميــل.

ويف ٍوقــت الحــق، خــال ِالقــرن ّالســادس بنــى اإلمبراطــور البيزنطــي جســتنيان ًكنيســة ًجديــدة ُم ّتميــزة يف نفــس املــكان. وخــال الغــزو الفارســي يف القــرن ّالســابع جنــت الكنيســة مــن ّالدمــار، وبحلــول القــرن احلــادي عشــر رفــع الصليبيــون ِراياتهــم فــوق كنيســة املهــد وقامــوا ِبترميمهــا. ومــن ِأجــل ِحمايتهــا مــن ّالغــزاة ِوملكانتهــا ّالد ّينيــة ت تخفيــض وتضييــق ِاملدخــل الرئيــس لكنيســة املهــد ًّتدريجيــا. وتوجــد يف داخــل الكنيســة مجموعتــان مــن الســالم التــي ّتــؤدي الــىمغــارة املهــد حيــث توجــد ٌجنمــة ّفضيــة ّاللــون بأربعــة عشــر ًشــعاعا لتشــير إلــى نفــس البقعــة التــي ُولــد فيهــا يســوع. ويوجــد نقــش حــول ّالنجمــة ّباللغــة ّاليونانيــة يقــول “هنــا مــن الســيدة العــذراء ولــد الطفــل يســوع”. وتشــترك ّالطوائــف ّاملســيحية الثلثــة: ّالــروم األرثوذكــس، الــروم ّالكاثوليكيــة، واألرمــن يف الكنيســة.

5 ساحة املهد تقــع ســاحة املهــد وســط مدينــة بيــت حلــم، وتُعتبــر أحــد املعالــم املهمــة علــى مســتوى املدينــة، وأطلــق عليهــا اســم ســاحة املهــد نســبة لكنيســة املهــد املوجــودة فيهــا. ويف هــذه ّالســاحة وحولهــا َيوج ــدباإلضافــة إلــى كنيســة املهــد مســجد عمــر بــن الطاب، ومركــز الســام ومحــات ّســياحية لبيــع ُمنتجــات ّســياحية مــن خشــب ّالزيتــون ّوالصــدف ّواملطــرزات وغيرهــا مــن عمــل أهالــي بيــت حلــم واحملافظــة، وعلــى اجلانــب األميــن مــن الســاحة تقــع بلديــة بيــت حلــم التــي ّتأسســت عــام ألــف وثمامنئــة واثنــني وســبعني.

خــال الفتــرة ّالعثمانيــة اســتخدمت ّالســاحة كســوق، حيــث اعتــاد النــاس علــى ّالتجمــع لبيــع مــا لديهــم مــن الفواكــه والضــروات واملواشــي. ويف عــام ألــف وتســعمئة وتســعة وعشــرين ت نقــل ّالســوق القــدي إلــى موقعــه احلالــي يف وســط املدينــة القدميــة، وبــني عامــي ألــف وتســعمئة وثمانــي وتســعني وألفــني أعيــد ترميــم ّالســاحة. تُعتبــر ســاحة املهــد ًملتقــى لفعاليــات ّثقافيــة ّواجتماعيــة ّوسياســية ّهامــة، حيــث تُقــام فيهــا معــارض وحفــات ّموســيقية ونشــاطات مختلفــة.

6 مسجد عمر يقــع مســجد عمــريف زاويــة شــارع البابــا بولــس الســادس وســاحة املهــد، ت بنــاءه يف عــام 1860تكرميــا للخليفــة عمــر بــن الطــاب، الــذي زار املدينــة يف القــرن الســابع ميــادي الليفــة، وقــام بالصــاة يف احلنيــةاجلنوبيــة لكنيســة املهــد، ولكــن تنــص العهــدة العمرية مرســوماًيقضــي بــأن الكنيســة ســتبقى مــكان العبــادة مســيحيني. وتنــص الوثيقــة التــي مــن شــأنها الســماح للمســلمني للصــاة هنــاك فقــط بشــكل فــردي. وكان املســجد يف األصــل مبنــى صغيــر ومتواضــع. ومــع ذلــك، يف عــام 1953 قامــت احلكومــة األردنيــة بترميــم املســجد. وت ترميمــه مــرة أخــرى يف عــام 2004، وقــد أعيــد بنــاؤه مــن قبــل الرابطــة اإلماراتيــة بعــد تعرضــهألضــرار خــال االنتفاضــة الثانيــة .)2000-2005(

7 مغارة احلليب يُعتقــد ّبــأن مغــارة احلليــب هــو املــكان الــذي وجــدت فيــه العائلــة املقدســة ًمــاذا لهــم خــال ذبــح االبريــاء، قبــل أن ّيتمكنــوا مــن الفــرار إلــى مصــر. اكتســبت املغــارة هــذا االســم )مغــارة احلليــب( مــن االعتقــاد الســائد ّبــأن قطــرة مــن حليــب مــري العــذراء ســقطت علــى األرض ّوتغيــر لــون الكهــف إلــى األبيــض، وعلــى ّمــر األجيــال قامــت العديــد مــن النســاء اللواتــي ال ْينجــن أطفــا ً الومــن مختلــف األديــان بزيــارة مغــارة احلليــب مــن أجــل االبتهــال للحصــول علــى هبــة النســل. وعــادة مــا يأخــذن ّمعهــن ًقطعــا مــن الصخــر مــن املغــارة البيضــاء والتــي يعتقــد ّبــأن لهــا ّقــوة عجائبيــة.

َالحقــا، ًوحتديــدا يف القــرن الامــس ميــادي، بُنيــت الكنيســة البيزنطيــة فــوق املغــارة، حيــث ميكــن رؤيــة بقايــا األرضيــة الفسيفســائية ّامللونــة منــذ ذلــك الوقــت يف باحــة الكنيســة احلاليــة، والتــي ُش ّدتــي حــول املغــارة علــى يــد اآلبــاء الفرنسيســكان عــام 1872. تتزيــني واجهــة الكنيســة بالنحــت الصخــري املبســط منــذ عــام 1935، وتعتبــر مثــاال جيــدا علــى احلــرف احملليــة.

8 متحف البد يقــع ُمتحــف البــد النتــاج زيــت الزيتــون، واملعــروف أيضــا باســم متحــف بــد جقمــان، يف قلــب البلــدة القدميــةيف بيــت حلــم داخــل مبنــى قــدي يعــود إلــى القرنــني الثامــن والتاســع عشــر ميــادي.

متحــف البــد هــو ٌ نتــاج ٍملشــروع ّمقــد ٍ ممــن وزارة الســياحة واآلثــار الفلســطينية، حيــث ت ُــه ترميممــن خــال دائــرة اآلثــار، وذلــك بالتنســيق مــع برنامــج األمم املتحــدة اإلمنائــي ّواجلمعيــة ّاألرثوذكســية ّاليونانيــة بــ نيعامــي ألــف وتســعمئة وثمانيــة وتســعني وألفــني. يف عــام ألفــني وأربعــة عشــر ت ترميــم املبنــى ّمــرة أخــرى مبســاعدة مــن القنصليــة ّالفرنســية يف القــدس. ُّيضــم املتحــف ًمجموعــة مــن ّالتحــف ّاألثريــة ّواإلثنوغرافيــة التــي ّتصــور عمليــة إنتــاج زيــت الزيتــون، وتشــرح املعروضــات ّكيفيــة اســتخدام زيــت الزيتــون يف إضــاءة املصابيــح ويف ّالطــب والغــذاء وإنتــاج ّالصابــون ومســتحضرات ّالتجميــل ِوغيرهــا مــن األمــور الكثيــرة.

9 شارع النجمة يبــدأ شــارع النجمــة مــن موقــع آبــار امللــك داود، ّ وميــرباحلــارات ّالتاريخيــة لبيــت حلــم ليصــل إلــى دوار املنــارة يف شــارع البابــا بولــس الســادس ّاملــؤدي إلــى ســاحة املهد وكنيســة املهد. ويُعتقــد ّبــأن هــذه الطريــق ســلكها يوســف ومــري للوصــول الــى مغــارة املهــد؛ ّويتكــرر املســار ذاتــهُ كل عــام خــال احتفــاالت عيــد امليــاد يف ّالرابــع والعشــرين مــن شــهر كانــون أول والســادس مــن كانــون ثانــي ّوالثامــن عشــر مــن كانــون ثانــي، حيــث يقــوم البطاركــة مــن مختلــف ّالطوائــف ّاملســيحية، ّتتقدمهــم الفــرق ّالكشــفية ّوشــخصيات ّرســمية ّواجتماعيــة، باملــرور بشــارع النجمــة نحــو كنيســة املهــد للحتفــال مبيــاد يســوع املســيح يف بيــت حلــم.

يف التاســع مــن حزيــران عــام 2012م ِأدر َج شــارع النجمــة ًجنبــا إلــى جنــب مــع كنيســة املهــد يف قائمــةاليونســكو للتــراث العاملــي حتــت اســم “مــكان والدة يســوع وكنيســة املهــد وطريــق احلج”.

10 قوس الزرارة يقــع قــوس ّالــزرارة يف شــارع النجمــة قبــلاملنعطــف ّاملــؤدي إلــى ســاحة املهد، ويُعتقــد ّبــأن قــوس ّالــزرارة اســتخدم كأحــد البوابــات الرئيســية ملدينــة بيــت حلــم القدميــة كمــا هــو ُمبــ ّني علــى العديــد مــن النقــوش ّاحلجريــة القدميــة )التــي يعــود تاريخهــا الــى القــرن الســادس عشــر والســابع عشــر ميــادي(؛ وأطلَقــت عليهــا ُ اللوحــاتالقدميــة اســم بوابــة دمشــق. والــزرارة تعنــي البقعــة؛ حيــث يحاصــر الشــخص أو بتعبيــر أدق يحشــر يف الزاويــة. وتقــول إحــدى األســاطير ّبــأن القــوس كان املــكان الــذيحاصــر فيــه املتمــردون ّاحملليــون اجلنــود ّالعثمانيــني. وتقــول روايــة أخــرى بــأن اقتتــال داخلــي كان هنــاك بــني العشــائر املختلفــة، وهنالــك روايــة أخــرى تقــول ّبــأن مــري العــذراء أرســلت الدبابيــر الغاضبــة لتحاصــر النــاس ّالذيــن يريــدون نهــب كنيســة املهــد.

آبار النبي داوود ّتتكــون آبــار النبــي داود مــن ثلثــة آبــار تقــع ضمــن مبنــى مركــز العمــل الكاثوليكــي علــى بعــد بضعــة دقائــق ًســيرا علــى األقــدام مــن كنيســة املهــد. واآلبــار، التــي ال تــزال قيــد االســتخدام، ترتبــط باملــكان حيــث قــام جنــود النبــي داود مبحاربــة جنــود الفلســتينني مــن أجــل جلــب امليــاه لــه ليشــرب. وعندمــا عــادوا إلــى مغــارة عــدالم، حيــث يختبــئ امللــكوأتباعــه، رفــض امللــك شــرب املــاء الــذي ّهــددت حيــاة جنــوده مــن أجــل إحضــاره. يف عــام ألــفوثمامنئــة وخمســة وتســعني أكتُ ِش َــفت ّأرضيــة ّفسيفســائية لكنيســة ّبيزنطيــة يف املــكان، وبالقــربمنهــا اكتشــفت مقبــرة للرهبــانحتــت األرض بجانــب اآلبــار.

13 King David’s Wells King David’s Wells are three water cisterns located within the grounds of the Catholic Action Center, just a few minutes walk from the Church of the Nativity. The wells, which are still in use, are related to the place where David’s soldiers broke through the Philistine lines in order to fetch him drinking water. When they returned to the Cave of Adullam, where the king and his followers were hiding, the king declined to drink from the water which his soldiers risked their lives to retrieve. In 1895, remains of a mosaic from a Byzantine church and an underground monks’ cemetery were discovered just beyond the cisterns.

12 Qaus Al-Zarrara Qaus Al-Zarrara (Zarrara Arch) is located on Star Street, just before the sharp turn left that leads to Manger Square. It is assumed that Qaus Al-Zarrara used to be one of the main gates of Bethlehem’s old city center, as it is shown on many ancient lithographs (dating from the 16th - 17th centuries). Old paintings call it the Damascus Gate. Al-Zarrara means a spot where someone is trapped or more precisely - cornered. One legend says that the arch was a place where local rebels who fought against the Ottoman Army cornered the soldiers. Another version of this story says that it was an internal fight between different family clans. Yet another story says that they were angry wasps sent by the Virgin Mary that cornered people who wanted to loot the Church of the Nativity.

The arch’s architecture is rather complex. It consists of two cross vaults whose height permitted a camel with a load to pass under. Above the arch is a two-storey residential building with two windows overlooking the street.

11 Star Street Star Street begins at the site of King David’s Wells and leads through the historic quarters of Bethlehem and under the Qaus Al-Zarrara (Zarrara Arch, also called the Damascus Gate), to merge at Al-Manara Square with Pope Paul VI Street and continue towards Manger Square and the Church of the Nativity. The path is believed to be the route which Joseph and Mary took to approach the Grotto of the Nativity. The same journey is repeated every year during the Christmas festivities. On December 24th, January 6th, and January 18th, patriarchs of various Christian denominations, preceded by scout troupes and officials, follow the street towards the Church of the Nativity to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ in Bethlehem.

On June 29, 2012, together with the Church of the Nativity, Star Street was inscribed on the UNESCO List as a World Heritage Site under the name “Birthplace of Jesus, Church of the Nativity and the Pilgrimage Route.”

10 Al Bad Museum The Al Bad Museum for Olive Oil Production, also known as the Badd Giacaman Museum is located in the heart of the Old City of Bethlehem in a traditional building that dates back to the 18th–19th century.

The Museum is a project of the Palestinian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities. It was renovated by the Department of Antiquities, in coordination with the UNDP and the Greek Orthodox Society between 1998 and 2000. In 2014, the building was restored again with help of the French Consulate of Jerusalem. The Museum houses a collection of ethnographic and archaeological artifacts depicting the process of olive oil production. The exhibits demonstrate the use of olive oil for lamps, medicine, food, soap, and cosmetics, among many other things.

9 Chapel of the Milk Grotto The Milk Grotto is said to be the place where the Holy Family found their refuge during the Massacre of the Innocents, before they could flee into Egypt. The Grotto’s name comes from the belief that a drop of the Virgin Mary’s milk fell down onto the floor of the cave and changed its color to milky-white. For ages, childless woman of many religions have visited the Milk Grotto in order to ask for the gift of offspring. They usually take with them a piece of the Grotto’s white rock that is believed to have magical power. A Byzantine Church was built over the Grotto in the 5th century. Remnants of a colorful mosaic floor from that time can be seen in the courtyard of the present chapel, which was constructed around the Grotto by the Franciscan Brothers in 1872. The flat sculpture decorating the Chapel’s facade since 1935 is a fine example of local craftsmanship.

8 Mosque of Omar The Mosque of Omar, located at the corner of Paul VI Street and Manger Square, was built in 1860 in honor of Caliph Omar Ibn Al-Khattab, who in the 7th century conquered the Byzantine Empire. The Caliph prayed in the southern aisle of the Basilica of the Nativity, however, in the Pact of Omar, he decreed that the Basilica would remain a Christian place of worship. The document stipulated that Muslims would be allowed to pray there only individually and prohibited the call to prayer (al- Adhan) from being made from the church walls. The Mosque was originally a small and modest building; however, in 1953 the Jordanian government sponsored renovations. Again in 2004, the Emirati Association reconstructed the Mosque after it was damaged during the Second Intifada (2000 - 2005).

7 Manger Square Manger Square, located in the center of Bethlehem, is known as an important city square. It takes its name from the “manger” where Jesus was laid after his birth, according to Christian belief. The Church of the Nativity, Mosque of Omar, Peace Center, and multiple souvenir shops are located around the Square. On the right side of the Mosque of Omar, lies the Bethlehem Municipality that was established in 1872. During the Ottoman period, the Square acted as a market where the people gathered to sell their fruits, vegetables, and livestock. In 1929, the old market was relocated to its present location in the middle of the Old City. Between 1998 and 2000, the Square was renovated. Currently, Manger Square is considered an important cultural and social spot. Different events, exhibitions, concerts, and gatherings are organized there.

6 Church of the Nativity The Church of the Nativity is one of the oldest working churches in existence today. The first Church was built by the Roman Emperor Constantine in the 4th century AD, over the grotto where Mary gave birth to Jesus. Constantine and his mother, Helena, built a magnificent and majestic church adorned with beautiful marble and mosaics.

Later, during the 6th century, the Byzantine emperor Justinian built a new and even more intricate church on the same spot. During the Persian invasion in the 7th century, the church was spared destruction. By the 11th century, the Crusaders raised their flag above the Basilica of the Nativity and renovated it. The main entrance to the Church of the Nativity was gradually made lower and narrower in order to protect it from invaders. Two sets of stairs lead down to the Grotto of the Nativity where a fourteen point silver star marks the exact spot of Jesus’ birth. An inscription on the star states: Hic de Virgin Maria Jesus Christus Natus Est – meaning “Here Jesus Christ was born to the Virgin Mary.” The actual guardianship of the Church is shared by three Christian denominations: Greek Orthodox, Roman Catholic, and Armenian.

(And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.) And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David) to be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child. And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered. And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn. And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men. And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us. And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger. And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child. And all they that heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds. But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart. And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told unto them.

4 for the decision of the partition of Palestine, 30 years for the first Palestinian Intifada, and 10 years for the Palestinian internal division. Yes, it is time for the world to stand together in unity to end the suffering of our Palestinian people, whose identity resides in the sustainability of their existence as people and land. Yes, it is from Bethlehem that we send a message of life in Christmas and throughout the year to all innocents suffering all over the world. We pray to our baby lord Jesus for peace would prevail in the year 2017 with courageous decisions and acts to achieve peace. We hope families would reunite on their land after having experienced the bitter refuge far from their homeland. We as Palestinians feel their misery as more than 6 million Palestinian refugees are still scattered in the world, dreaming to return home. In addition to the compulsorily deportees and prisoners in the Israeli prisons longing for their liberty and freedom.

It all began in Bethlehem, where the crib designates mercy and life. From that humble cradle God’s mercy emerged to humanity to give hope and serenity to those who need it, so that Mercy would indeed be the true meaning of Christmas.

Palestine is our homeland, Bethlehem is our town. Bethlehem is a house that lives hope, engulfed with the spirit of resilience and love, and prays for our homeland, its people, and the entire humanity. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

3 Christmas Message We were created with God’s mercy for the goodness of creation. We dedicate our lives to the mercy of the almighty that delivers tranquility, peace and justice; the mercy that is manifested in the birth of the Infant Jesus. Our Christmas theme for this year is “Mercy is the Spirit of Christmas”. Today we live in a world that desperately needs mercy that as indicated by his holiness Pope Francis “is the force that reawakens us to new life and instils in us the courage to look to the future with hope”. Today we must live a life designated with peace where there is no place for wars and conflicts, and which starts when we think about others. “Think of Others” by Mahmoud Darwish reflects the basic idea of genuine mercy, where Darwish continues even “As you conduct your wars – think of others. Don’t forget those who want peace”. Let us think of the children who are the victims of war, families who are being detached and displaced from their origins, and countries that are being stratified. Here resides the cruelty of war because of which humanity falls to destruction and lose the meaning of mercy in our lives. Let us think of others, let us engulf them with love, and fill their hearts with hope. Let us be as Saint Francis said “an instrument of peace” that shares love, forgiveness, unity, and joy. Then and only then we live the spirit of Christmas. In Palestine, the land of divinity, where our grandfathers longley lived, we continue to build our country with strength, determination and constancy to have a new life with a better future for our forthcoming generations; a homeland free of occupation, strangulation and walling. Let 2017 witness the end of occupation in Palestine, for what this year enfolds of unique symbolism recalling 100 years of Belfour declaration, 70 years
