Following a group of “at risk” 12-year-old boys from H y n o the tough, inner-city streets of Baltimore who leave home to attend the 7th and 8th grades at T y s e Baraka, an experimental boarding school located in Kenya, this film embarks on an emotionally t r u o explosive and transformative journey shot over three years. Faced with a strict academic and C disciplinary program as well as with the freedom to be normal teenage boys, they endure homesickness, anger, fear and culture shock to shed their disruptive, misunderstood and academically disinterested selves. The school teaches them about reconciliation and teamwork, finds the achievers buried within and gives them hope. They also come to understand that Baraka n o m is the only thing standing between them and drug dealing, addiction, academic failure d r a H or worse. Through extensive time with the boys in Baltimore and Africa, the filmmakers capture y n o the kids’ amazing experiences and how they fare when they are forced to return to the difficult T y s e t realities of their city. Directed by Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady and produced by Loki Films. r u o C Best Documentary, Atlanta Film Festival and Newport International Film Festival. Audience Award, SILVERDOCS. Read Ebook {PDF EPUB} Money into light The Emerald Forest a diary by John Boorman Money into light: The Emerald Forest a diary by John Boorman. Director, Producer, Actor. John Boorman was born in Shepperton, Middlesex on 18 January 1933. After the Blitzed childhood he evoked in Hope and Glory (1997), national service and a spell in dry-cleaning, he progressed from journalism into television, eventually becoming the head of the BBC 's Bristol- based Documentary Unit in 1962. His first feature, Catch Us If You Can (1965), an attempt to repeat the success of A Hard Day's Night (d. Richard Lester, 1964), is handicapped by the fact that the Dave Clark Five are infinitely less interesting, musically and as screen personalities, than The Beatles . However, within the format of the UK pop musical, the film shows traces of a distinct directorial personality. As the group make their way West, Boorman catches glimpses of interesting, unusual English landscapes: considering that he would specialise in alien or alienating worlds, it is intriguing that even at this early stage, he was casting his eye around for the fantastical among the greenery. Boorman was drawn to for the opportunity to make larger-scale cinema and in Point Blank (1967), a potent distillation of a Richard Stark novel, brought a stranger's vision to the decaying fortress of Alcatraz and the proto-hippy world of San Francisco. After Point Blank , Boorman re-teamed with Lee Marvin (partnered with Toshiro Mifune ) for the robinsonade of Hell in the Pacific (US, 1968), a war movie with a slightly too fable-like gimmick: the relationship of nations encapsulated by two representative soldiers stranded together on an island and forced to put aside war to survive.

  • And the Ship Sails On
And The Ship Sails On by Serge Toubiana at the occasion of the end of his term as Director-General of the Cinémathèque française. Within just a few days, I shall come to the end of my term as Director-General of the Cinémathèque française. As of February 1st, 2016, Frédéric Bonnaud will take up the reins and assume full responsibility for this great institution. We shall have spent a great deal of time in each other's company over the past month, with a view to inducting Frédéric into the way the place works. He has been able to learn the range of our activities, meet the teams and discover all our on-going projects. This friendly transition from one director-general to the next is designed to allow Frédéric to function at full-steam from day one. The handover will have been, both in reality and in the perception, a peaceful moment in the life of the Cinémathèque, perhaps the first easy handover in its long and sometimes turbulent history. That's the way we want it - we being Costa-Gavras, chairman of our board, and the regulatory authority, represented by Fleur Pellerin, Minister of Culture and Communication, and Frédérique Bredin, Chairperson of the CNC, France's National Centre for Cinema and Animation. The peaceful nature of this handover offers further proof that the Cinémathèque has entered into a period of maturity and is now sufficiently grounded and self-confident to start out on the next chapter without trepidation. But let me step back in time. Since moving into the Frank Gehry building at 51 rue de Bercy, at the behest of the Ministry of Culture, the Cinémathèque française has undergone a profound transformation.

  • Costa-Gavras: a Retrospective
The Museum of Modern Art For Immediate Release March 1990 COSTA-GAVRAS: A RETROSPECTIVE April 13 - 24, 1990 A complete retrospective of twelve feature films by Costa-Gavras, the Greek-born French filmmaker, opens at The Museum of Modern Art on April 13, 1990. Both thought provoking and entertaining, Costa-Gavras's suspenseful mysteries deal with compelling social issues and are often based on actual political incidents. His stories involve the motivations and misuses of power and often explore the concept of trust in personal and public relationships. His films frequently star such popular actors as Fanny Ardant, Jill Clayburgh, Jessica Lange, Jack Lemmon, Yves Montand (who stars in six of the films), Simone Signoret, Sissy Spacek, and Debra Winger. Opening with Z (1969), one of his best-known works, COSTA GAVRAS: A RETROSPECTIVE continues through April 24. New prints of Costa-Gavras's early French films have been made available for this retrospective. These include his first film, The Sleeping Car Murders (1965), a thriller about the hunt for a murderer on an overnight train; the American premiere of the original version of One Man Too Many/Shock Troops (1967), a story of resistance fighters who free a group of political prisoners from a Nazi jail; and Family Business (1986), a drama about the transformation of a family crime ring into the local affiliate of an international syndicate. Also featured are Z (1969), an investigation into the murder of a politician; State of Siege (1972), a fictionalized version of the 1970 kidnapping of an American diplomat in Uruguay; and Special Section -more- 11 West 53 Street, New York, N.Y.

The article examines labour issues and conditions and politics of film sound work during this era, some of which continue to be applicable today. The development of new production practices pushed filmmakers including George Lucas, Francis Ford Coppola, and Walter Murch to produce films outside the traditional Hollywood studio production paradigm. This new generation of filmmakers held sound with a higher status and popularized non- traditional ways of working with sound. They created the new job title of sound designer to signify a person who supervises and collaborates with the director, department heads, and screenwriter on the use and function of sound through all of the filmmaking phases from the writing stage through the final mix.

  • John Boorman
13/15 John Boorman BFI Southbank to honour the director with a BFI Fellowship on 25 March followed by a career retrospective throughout April On 25 March John Boorman will be presented a BFI Fellowship – the highest accolade that the nation’s leading organisation for film can award. To mark the occasion he will be interviewed by Michel Ciment, on-stage at BFI Southbank, to launch a major retrospective of his work and to celebrate his recent 80th birthday. There will also be an Extended Run and nationwide release of Point Blank (1967) and an exhibition of artefacts from Boorman’s personal archive, on display in the Mezzanine – including a dress worn by Helen Mirren in Excalibur (1981). To complement this season there will be an exclusive run of Me and Me Dad (2011), an intimate insight of life in the Boorman family, directed by John’s daughter Katrine Boorman (who will appear in conversation on 27 March, following a preview of her film). According to Philip French, John Boorman is ‘one of the greatest filmmakers this country has produced’. He began his career as a documentary director for the BBC with Citizen 63 (BBC, 1963) and The Newcomers (BBC, 1964), and this season will feature these early works and follow his varied filmmaking career to date. His first feature film, Catch Us If You Can (1965), was a showcase for the Dave Clark Five and caught the attention and support of Pauline Kael. It was followed by The Quarry: Portrait of a Man as a Parylsed Artist (BBC, 1966), inspired by Fellini’s 8½ and events in Boorman’s own life.
