  • The Wiltshire Regiment ______
The Wiltshire Regiment ________ Return of the Battalion _______ Welcome Home _______ Reception at Devizes _______ Enthusiasm at Swindon The 3rd (Militia) Battalion of the Wiltshire Regiment has arrived home again. It reached Southampton last Wednesday evening on board the “Dominion,” and disembarked at 9 o’clock yesterday morning, subsequently entraining in a special train to come to Devizes, the Depot Town, for disembodiment. Here the Mayor (Alderman F. Randell) arranged for the public reception of the Battalion in the Market Place, as affording better facilities for the ceremony than the railway station. The ceremony took place at the Market Cross. From a platform here erected the Mayor, accompanied by the members of the Corporation and officials, presented an address to Colonel Sandford. The address is handsomely illuminated, and bears the arms of the Borough with a Crown, and the crest of the Regiment. The Corporation seal is affixed by a watered silk ribbon, and the document is fastened with a military riband. At the conclusion of the ceremony in the Market Place the Battalion marched to the Depot, where Lieutenant-General Lord Methuen presented the war medals. Lord Methuen addressed the men and expressed his regret that the Duke of Connaught, who had always taken a great interest in the battalion, could not be present to undertake the duty, and Sir Evelyn Wood, who commanded that army corps, was also unable to be present. There were reasons which made it a great pleasure for him (Lord Methuen) to undertake the duty, for no man ever did so much to bring that regiment of militia into good repute as did his late father (applause).

First of all, I would like to express my gratitude to my supervisor, Dr John Bourne, for supporting me during my studies. After a break of nearly a decade between completing my first degree and researching and writing this thesis, the experience has been daunting at times, but his patience and understanding have enabled me to finally complete my work. I would also like to thank Dr. Anthony Ingold, who has given constant advice and encouragement during my period of study. He too helped guide me through the process of writing my thesis, proof-reading my early drafts and often giving me a much-needed push to complete my chapters. Jeff Elson, who has passed on to me his extensive knowledge on the South and North Staffordshire Regiments over the years, also provided valuable advice and assistance during my research.

Hosted by Marlborough Town Council with proceeds going to The Royal British Legion The Great War The Great War as it was known in the period before the 2nd World War broke out in August 1914. • World War One 'Letters Home' Project
World War One ‘Letters Home’ project These fictional letters are based on brief descriptions in The Great War: Devizes District Soldiers, by Richard Broadhead. This book records all known soldiers from Devizes who died during the war. They were kindly written by volunteers of all ages. Most were individuals who responded to a call for help, but two schools also took part. Wiltshire Museum thanks all the volunteers for their help. Almost all the soldiers are commemorated on the War Memorial just down the street from the museum, next to St. John’s Church. The letters were posted around Devizes as part of the WW1 Centenary Commemoration weekend, 2018. This totally fictional letter was written by Hugo, aged 7. It was not inspired by a real soldier and is totally from his imagination. The Western Front Dear Mum, I’m writing this letter to tell you that I am Okay. A couple of tanks have broken through the German border. Hope the weather is better where you are because it’s not going to improve here. We’ve had a few attacks, but not many this week. I really wish the war would end so I can could get out of this horrid trench. There are rats and lice everywhere. I’ve got malaria. I suppose I am going to die soon. We’ve just been sent a trench cake from a spy at the home front. I hope you’re okay. I love you a lot Arthur xxxxxxx Trooper Harold Banbury Harold was in the 19th Hussars. He was married to Kathleen and they lived in Bridewell Street.
