Palm Sunday Holy Thursday Good Friday Vigil Easter Triduum Tri Triduum Holy Week The Triduum– Holy Thursday Lent ends on the evening of Holy Thursday with the celebration of the liturgy called, Holy Thursday, Evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper. On the morning of Holy Thursday the Chrism Mass is celebrated by the bishop of each diocese. For pas- toral reasons it may be celebrated on a day prior to Holy Thursday. In the Chrism Mass the bishop, concelebrating Mass with the priests in his diocese, blesses oils and consecrates the oil mixed with chrism. The blessing of the oils is an ancient tradition dating back to Hippolytus and the Apostolic Tradition of the third centu- ry. Two oils are blessed: oil of catechumens and oil of the infirmed; one oil is consecrated: Sacred Chrism. The Triduum– Holy Thursday The Easter Triduum is the “mother of all feasts”. All other feasts of the liturgical year hinge on this great feast. The Triduum, which means, “three days”, is the word designated for the celebration of the Lord’s paschal mystery that spans three days; it is one great liturgy that lasts three days. There is no formal closing to the Holy Thursday or Good Friday liturgies as each is a continuation of the pre- vious one until the liturgy culminates with the Easter Vigil. The Triduum begins with the Mass of the Lord’s Supper, continues with the celebration of the Lord’s Passion on Good Friday, culminates with the Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday, and ends on Easter Sunday at sundown. -

LENTEN GUIDE 2019 Great Lent begins on March 11 and is followed by Holy Week, leading us to Pascha, Easter Sunday, April 28, 2019. We will greet the holy season of Great Lent with joy and enthusiasm and with the hope that we will be found worthy of its beauty and power. It is the season of repentance, a time to slow down and once again rediscover the meaning of our life in Christ. It is the time set aside each year for a renewal of our soul in the hope which has been given to us in Christ. This simple Lenten Guide highlights some of the Lenten services and activities taking place this year. Please try to take advantage of the unique opportunity of this holy season for the purpose of spiritual cleansing and healing. May God help us all to do so! Each Sunday during Great Lent, Matins is celebrated at 9:00 a.m. and the Divine Liturgy at 10:00 a.m. as usual. However, during the five Sundays in Great Lent, the Liturgy of Saint Basil is celebrated, instead of the usual Liturgy of Saint John Chrysostom. The Liturgy of Saint Basil contains some of the most beautiful prayers of the Church. The Sacrament of Holy Confession The Sacrament of Penance—Confession is our opportunity for reconciliation with God and man in the Church. There are three main elements to the act of formal penance: Sincere sorrow for sins committed; an open and heartfelt confession of sins; and the prayer of absolution given by God through the priest and through which the forgiveness of God is bestowed upon the repentant sinner. -

Matins of Great and Holy Saturday (Friday Night) The priest, vested in a dark epitrachelion, opens the curtain, takes the censer, and begins: Priest: Blessed is our God always, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Reader: Amen. Glory to Thee, O God; glory to Thee! While the following prayers are being read, the priest censes the altar, the sanctuary, and the people. Reader: O Heavenly King, the Comforter, the Spirit of Truth, Who art everywhere and fillest all things, Treasury of blessings, and Giver of Life, come and abide in us, and cleanse us from every impurity, and save our souls, O Good One. Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal, have mercy on us! (3) Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen. THE DIVINE OFFICE BRO. EMMANUEL NUGENT, 0. P. PIRITUAL life must be supplied by spiritual energy. An efficient source of spiritual energy is prayer. From Holy Scripture we learn that we should pray always. li In general, this signifies that whatever we do should be done for the honor and glory of God. In a more restricted sense, it requires that each day be so divided that at stated in tervals we offer to God acts of prayer. From a very early period it has been the custom of the Church, following rather closely the custom that prevailed among the Chosen People, and later among the Apostles and early Christians, to arrange the time for her public or official prayer as follows: Matins and Lauds (during the night), Prime (6 A.M.), Tierce (9 A.M.), Sext (12M.), None (3 P.M.), Vespers (6 .P. M.), Compline (nightfall). The Christian day is thus sanc tified and regulated and conformed to the verses of the Royal Psalmist: "I arose at midnight to give praise to Thee" (Matins), "Seven times a day have I given praise to Thee"1 (Lauds and the remaining hours). Each of the above divisions of the Divine Office is called, in liturgical language, an hour, conforming to the Roman and Jewish third, sixth, and ninth hour, etc. It is from this division of the day that the names are given to the various groups of prayers or hours recited daily by the priest when he reads his breviary. It is from the same source that has come the name of the service known to the laity as Sunday Vespers, and which constitutes only a portion of the Divine Office for that day. -

The Dormition of our Most Holy Lady “This is none other than the House of God. the Theotokos and Ever Virgin Mary And this is the Gate of Heaven” Genesis 28:17 Concerning the Dormition of the Theotokos, this is what the Church has received from ancient times from the tradi- tion of the Fathers. When the time drew nigh that our Sav- ior was well-pleased to take His Mother to Himself, He declared unto her through an Angel that three days hence, He would translate her from this temporal life to eternity and bliss. On hearing this, she went up with haste to the Mount of Olives, where she prayed continuously. Giving thanks to God, she returned to her house and prepared whatever was necessary for her burial. While these things were taking place, clouds caught up the Apostles from the ends of the earth, where each one happened to be preach- ing, and brought them at once to the house of the Mother of God, who informed them of the cause of their sudden gathering. As a mother, she consoled them in their affliction as was meet, and then raised her hands to Heaven and prayed for the peace of the world. She blessed the Apostles, and, reclining upon her bed with seemliness, gave up her all-holy spirit into the hands of her Son and God. With reverence and many lights, and chanting burial hymns, the Apostles took up that God-receiving body and brought it to the sepulchre, while the Angels from Heaven chanted with them, and sent forth her who is higher than the Cherubim.
