Scooping the Loop CHICAGO, 1996 Chicago Transit Authority “Loop” elevated tracks—Lake & Wabash, downtown Chicago [UPDATE: October, 2008—As I gradually go back over my old travelogues, I’ll be leaving the original text intact but adding additional comments in boldfaced enclosed in brackets to expand on what was originally said. I’ll also add some additional scanned photos to enhance the original travelogues.] [This trip was a definite first. While I’d been to Chicago before, this was the first time I’d really made the city my destination and spent a significant amount of time there all at once. I’d return almost countless times. Six years later, when a former student of mine was playing minor league baseball in Beloit, Wisconsin, I’d spend day after day in the city and night after night at the ballpark in Beloit. I’d also head east several times after our family Thanksgiving get-togethers in Iowa City, and I’d return on my own, with family members, and with the quiz bowl team, for both weekend getaways and lengthy visits. Today I know Chicago about as well as I know any place on earth, and taking the CTA ‘L’ is second nature to me. That wasn’t true in 1996, though, and this trip was something very new for both Margaret and me.] This trip was definitely a departure for me. Never before have I done a vacation that was centered exclusively in one city. In the window between the end of my classes at Iowa Lakes Community College and the beginning of the school year at Bishop Garrigan High School, my sister Margaret and I planned to spend five days in a single place—Chicago.

  • 318 E Durham Street Proposed Action: Designation Property Owner
ADDRESS: 318 E DURHAM ST Name of Resource: 318 E Durham Street Proposed Action: Designation Property Owner: Sedgwick House, LP Nominator: East Durham Street Neighbors Staff Contact: Meredith Keller, [email protected] OVERVIEW: This nomination proposes to designate the property at 318 E. Durham Street as historic and list it on the Philadelphia Register of Historic Places. Under Criterion A, the nomination argues that the subject property is closely associated with Aston S. Tourison, an important developer of the Sedgwick Farms neighborhood in East Mt. Airy. It also suggests that the land’s prior association with Henry Lehnert, a well-respected maker of musical instruments, and Louis Grossman, “renowned in the field of medical science,” also support the subject property’s significance under Criterion A. Under Criterion C, the nomination argues that the subject property “records the beginning of the development in East Mt. Airy…built along the Reading Railroad commuter train line at the turn of the 19th century.” Under Criterion E, G and J, the nomination suggests that Tourison’s business, Ye Old Sedgwick Farms Company, was responsible for constructing most of the houses that still remain on the 300 and 500 blocks of E. Durham Street. The nomination argues that Tourison was a pioneer in residential development in East Mt. Airy who designed in a wide range of architectural styles across a wide range of home prices. Under Criterion H, the nomination describes the subject property as an established and familiar feature to the current residents of both the block and the surrounding streets, many of whom “consider [it] an asset to the legacy, social fabric, design, and character of this community-oriented walking neighborhood.” Tourison is unquestionably an important figure in the history and development of Mt.

However, as I sit down at my computer to write a letter to you there is jarring news of yet another act of senseless violence. A gunman has murdered innocent people in the office of a news organization in Maryland. We remain stressed, concerned and on edge.

  • Choices & Voices Version 2.0 Results
CHOICES & VOICES VERSION 2.0 RESULTS The Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission (DVRPC) launched Choices & Voices version 2.0 in October 2013 to reflect the newly adopted Connections 2040 Long-Range Plan key assumptions, including projected revenue through 2040, the updated transportation needs assessment, and to account for SEPTA’s proposed realignment plan. This online survey tool remains a key component of public outreach for long-range planning in Greater Philadelphia. Choices & Voices serves as a way for members of the public to share their preferences for future development patterns, transportation projects, and approaches to funding them. At the same time, it contains an educational component that offers the users a better understanding of the linkages between land use and transportation, the considerable basic maintenance and repair issues of the transportation network, and the consequences of failing to invest in transportation. Shortly after Choices & Voices version 2.0 was launched, Pennsylvania passed a significant transportation funding bill, Act 89, which substantially increased transportation funding in the state and removed SEPTA’s realignment plan from the discussion. With the passage of Act 89, DVRPC did little to market Choices & Voices version 2.0. In spite of this, more than 500 people viewed the site, and 66 regional vision scenarios were submitted to DVRPC. Nearly 1,900 people viewed version 1.0 and more than 250 regional vision scenarios were submitted to the original version. As an online application open to anyone, results should not be construed as a scientifically representational sample. However, Choices & Voices is one of a number of components that are used to develop the Long-Range Plan.
