About the Cover In November 2018, the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR) launched an intensive communication campaign to emphasize the agency’s contributions to the government. The “PAG” campaign is anchored on the agency’s revenue-generating function which many people, Filipinos included, are not aware of. We used various media platforms to educate the general public about PAGCOR’s programs and to heighten public awareness about our noble goals. Many people associate PAGCOR with gaming and casinos. But while operating and regulating games of chance are among our core mandates, our important mission is to help build a strong nation. As we remit half of our income to the National Treasury, we have become one of the biggest revenue generators of the government. A sizeable portion is also allocated for the agency’s mandated beneficiaries and the privileged sectors of society. We were able to provide funds for our various mandated beneficiaries by regulating gaming and preventing the proliferation of illegal gambling in the Philippines. Most of all, the dedication, talent and commitment of employees to their work enabled PAGCOR to achieve greater heights. In pursuing its mission of promoting management excellence for nation-building, the MAP partnered with the business community, the government, the academe and the civil society in pushing for reforms that help the country improve its competitiveness, enable businesses to capitalize on disruptions, encourage the government to sustain a level-playing business environment, and inspire the citizenry to contribute to social progress. Introduction This year, 1998, the Philippines commemorates the centenary since her independ- ence from a foreign domination. At the time of this writing, it is «all-systems-go» for this former Spanish colony, with both government agencies and non-government organizations pooling all human and material resources for a successful once-in-a-lifetime celebration. In the academe, various historical societies have been organized —if not revived— both in the national and regional levels, in an effort to put into writing slices and fragments in history that have been for long relegated to oral traditions and folklore. «What happened to the Church in the Philippines of the post-Spanish era?» Or, «How did the Filipinos fare being Catholics after our forebears left their shores for good?». These are questions perennially posed by modern-day Spanish nationals about the country Spain had ruled for close to four centuries.
