“COMPETING IN THE AGE OF DISRUPTION”

In 2018, the MAP encouraged collaborative and transformative programs that help organizations face the massive disruptions caused by advancements in technology, innovations in business models, prominence of borderless competition, adaptation to climate change, and dynamism in geopolitics.

In pursuing its mission of promoting management excellence for nation-building, the MAP partnered with the business community, the government, the academe and the civil society in pushing for reforms that help the country improve its competitiveness, enable businesses to capitalize on disruptions, encourage the government to sustain a level-playing business environment, and inspire the citizenry to contribute to social progress.

The MAP delved on the following three (3) policy programs for 2018:

1. Ease of Doing Business and Competitiveness 2. Managing Business Disruptions 3. Data Privacy

MANAGING BUSINESS DISRUPTIONS

In these times when so many changes are happening— at a very fast pace at that — organizations must adapt, or die. History has shown that even huge corporations are not invulnerable to disruptions. There is really no choice but to adapt, and some organizations need more help than others to turn disruptions into opportunities.

As long as programs are in place to increase the readiness of people in adopting new processes and technologies, disruptive innovations could potentially yield societal and economic benefits.

The MAP conducted the following activities in line with the Managing Business Disruptions advocacy:

DATA PRIVACY

Data Privacy and Cyber Security are issues that keep MAP members and other CEOs awake at night. While there have been robust developments in the field of data protection, data breaches remain as pervasive as ever. If the seemingly impenetrable Pentagon is vulnerable to data breaches, how can an ordinary individual protect his personal information?

Cyber-attacks put every organization at risk. Business continuity is unequivocally a Board Room responsibility, so business leaders and directors will have to increase the attention and resources they devote to Data Privacy and Cyber Security.

The RTD seeks to identify key policy, operating cost, and infrastructure challenges to the growth of seaports and shipping, as well as their solutions. Some goals of the policy brief are to improve maritime connectivity in the Philippines, avoid port congestion, improve customs efficiency, reduce domestic and international shipping costs, and develop cruise tourism. Given that the Philippines is archipelagic, efficient seaports and affordable shipping are critical to transporting both goods and people.

4.3 The MAP can explore the implementation of the following AAMO’s Priority Programs in the Philippines in 2018:

4.3.1 Asian Management Game (AMG)

The AMG is one of the annual activities of AAMO which aims to connect the different national management organizations in the Asian Pacific region. It has successfully served as a platform for young managers in the region to learn and exchange from one another.

The AMG is played over the internet in either English or Chinese version. Each AAMO Member will nominate up to 2 teams each consisting of 3 to 5 young managers. The registered teams will be allocated into groups by draw. Each team will, in each round, be assigned a company for managing its operations and making strategic decisions for a period of five financial quarters. The team that has achieved the highest share price shall be the winner.

The AMG comprises of trial round, semi-final and final. Each team is required to download from the AMG website the background information of the assigned company, which records its past performances and its present position. Decisions surrounding marketing, finance, production and human resources are entered online according to the Game Calendar schedule. At the end of each financial quarter, each team will receive a management report from the Game Administrator detailing the latest economic environment and the company’s performance reflecting the team’s decisions.

The AMG 2018 of the Asian Association of Management Organizations or AAMO, of which MAP is a member, was successfully held on August 25. A total of 8 teams from 6 different countries and regions reached the final.

The Champion came from Macau. The Philippine National Bank team from the Philippines placed 5th.

The other countries represented in the finals were India, Pakistan, Hong Kong, and Sri Lanka.

4.3.2 Young Managers’ Program (YMP)

The YMP engages and enhances the lives of young managers and encourages them to voice their opinions on the profession and challenges of management.

Each AAMO member can nominate 2 young managers to the YMP.

The YMP will be provided for free to all the chosen participants, including accommodation (2 participants of the same sex in one room), food & beverage as well as travel in Macau and Hong Kong. All participants have to pay for their airfare to Macau as well as the return to their home country.

The applicant should meet the following basic qualifications:

• Should hold a management position and lead a team. • Must be not older than 35. • Must have a valid passport and visa.

4.3.3 Management Capability Index (MCI)

The MCI enables any organization to identify and compare its management capabilities based on a set of standards.

In 2003, the Institute of Management of New Zealand (IMNZ) introduced the IMNZ MCI. The MCI is based on nine major drivers of management capability that deliver profitable business growth or the equivalent in non-companies. Actual results and comparative performance are used to create an index of management capability. The weightage of the nine categories in the final index are as follows:

(a) VISIONARY & STRATEGIC LEADERSHIP 15%

(b) PERFORMANCE LEADERSHIP 10%

(c) PEOPLE LEADERSHIP 10%

(d) FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT 10%

(e) ORGANISATION CAPABILITY 5%

(f) TECHNOLOGY & KNOWLEDGE 5%

(g) EXTERNAL RELATIONSHIPS 5%

(h) INNOVATION - PRODUCTS & SERVICES 10%

(i) RESULTS & COMPARATIVE PERFORMANCE 30%

TOTAL 100%

The primary value of the MCI for any organization is firstly in identifying where improvements can be made and then in comparing against other organizations in their own country and internationally. Improving management capability and through that, the performance of the organization will result in the organization ultimately achieving its potential. The first step is for Chief Executives/Managing Directors to benchmark their own organization against these results and then to identify opportunities for improvement.
