Anhang ............................................................................................................189 Danksagung ........................................................................................................206 ZUSAMMENFASSUNG Im Rahmen dieser Arbeit wurde die Bedeutung der Makroalgen fiir das Nahrungsnetz eines antarktischen Flachwassersystems untersucht. Die Arbeiten wurden in der Potter Cove auf der King George-Insel, der Hauptinsel der der Antarktischen Halbinsel vorgelagerten Süd-Shetland-Inselndurchgeführt Die Schwerpunkte lagen dabei auf der qualitativen und quantitativen Erfassung der Makroalgen in der Nahrung wichtiger pflanzenfressender Tiere (Herbivore). Außerde standen Fragen nach mögliche Fraßschutzmechanismeder Algen im Vordergrund. Folgende Ergebnisse lassen sich aus den Untersuchungen zusammenfassen: - Makroalgen könne - entgegen dem bisherigen Wissen uber Nahrungsnetze in antarktischen Gewassern - in Flachwassersystemen der Antarktis einen entscheidenden Anteil an der Nahrung von Herbivoren haben. Magenanalysen und Fraßexperiment zeigten, da Gastropoden, Amphipoden, Polychaeten, Isopoden und Fische, möglicherweisauch Echinodermen, als Herbivore an Makroalgen fressen. - Neben Generalisten, die eine Vielzahl von Algenarten als Nahrungsquelle nutzen (z.B. Laevilacunaria antarctica (Gastropoda) und Gondogeneia antarctica (Amphipoda)), haben sich bei einigen Herbivoren auch Spezialisierungen auf wenige Algenarten herausgebildet (z.B. Nacella concinna

Lindberg, and Charlie Wray Abstract.ÐKelps and other ¯eshy macroalgaeÐdominant reef-inhabiting organisms in cool seasÐ may have radiated extensively following late Cenozoic polar cooling, thus triggering a chain of evolutionary change in the trophic ecology of nearshore temperate ecosystems. We explore this hypothesis through an analysis of body size in the abalones (Gastropoda; Haliotidae), a widely distributed group in modern oceans that displays a broad range of body sizes and contains fossil representatives from the late Cretaceous (60±75 Ma). Geographic analysis of maximum shell length in living abalones showed that small-bodied species, while most common in the Tropics, have a cosmopolitan distribution, whereas large-bodied species occur exclusively in cold-water ecosys- tems dominated by kelps and other macroalgae. The phylogeography of body size evolution in extant abalones was assessed by constructing a molecular phylogeny in a mix of large and small species obtained from different regions of the world. This analysis demonstrates that small body size is the plesiomorphic state and largeness has likely arisen at least twice. Finally, we compiled data on shell length from the fossil record to determine how (slowly or suddenly) and when large body size arose in the abalones. These data indicate that large body size appears suddenly at the Miocene/Pliocene boundary. Our ®ndings support the view that ¯eshy-algal dominated ecosys- tems radiated rapidly in the coastal oceans with the onset of the most recent glacial age.

Harvested kelp is used mainly as feed supplements for abalone culture as well as sources of alginate for industrial and medical purposes. In this field study, the effect of harvesting kelp by cutting the fronds at various lengths (0, 15, 30, and 40 cm from the stipe for treatment T1, T2, T3 and T4, respectively) was investigated. A total of eighty matured plants were randomly selected and divided into the four treatments, consisting of two replicates each, with the various treatment plants receiving different coloured tags (blue, white, yellow and red, respectively). After cutting, the re-grown portions of the fronds were measured (from cut surfaces) weekly for 8 weeks and relative growth rate (RGR) was determined. Results indicated that among the various treatment groups, significant increase (P < 0.05) in the frond length after the harvesting was observed at the end of the eight-week experimental period. Kelps harvested by cutting 40 cm from the stipe (T4) recorded the highest frond length at the end of the period of investigation. However, during the period in which growth of the frond occurred in all treatments, the weekly mean RGR of frond per day was significantly higher (P < 0.05) in T1, than -1, in the other treatments, while it was least in T4 with values of 3.13 and 1.10 % day respectively at the end of the eight-week growth period.
