JOHN'S SCHOOLS & WHY MEN PAY FOR SEX by Michael E. Holtby, LCSW, BCD INTRODUCTION In this article I want to discuss the use of John's Schools, a diversion program which has become popular throughout the United States, as a way to deal with the customers of prostitution. However, in order to properly address John's Schools as an intervention strategy we must first understand what motivates men to seek anonymous sex. There are two conclusions from my experience with five hundred Johns: first, these men are not one group with one set of motivations and psychodynamics. If they have anything in common, besides the fact that they all paid for a sexual experience, it's that they all have an "attachment disorder" or some impairment in their ability to handle emotionally relational sex, or intimate relationships. However, to compare the "monger" or "hobbiest" who organizes much of his life around this activity, to the opportunist who impulsively pulls his car over when a woman waves at him from the sidewalk, is to ignore obvious differences. Likewise when designing a response to reducing the demand for commercial sex, specifically when addressing first time offenders, we need to design a program that recognizes that one size does not fit all. The most effective way to do this is to provide, in addition to an educational component, sessions with a psychotherapist to individually assess the underlying dynamics and provide counseling and referrals for further treatment. When compared with the current consequence in Denver for first time offenders - a $500 fine - John's School, as alternative sentencing seems much more relevant, and has proven in other cities to reduce their chance of reoffending by half. -

Bennett) This project – the first in-depth analysis of clerical concubinage in medieval England – examines cultural perceptions of clerical sexual misbehavior as well as the lived experiences of priests, concubines, and their children. Although much has been written on the imposition of priestly celibacy during the Gregorian Reform and on its rejection during the Reformation, the history of clerical concubinage between these two watersheds has remained largely unstudied. My analysis is based primarily on archival records from Hereford, a diocese in the West Midlands that incorporated both English- and Welsh-speaking parishes and combines the quantitative analysis of documentary evidence with a close reading of pastoral and popular literature. Drawing on an episcopal visitation from 1397, the act books of the consistory court, and bishops’ registers, I argue that clerical concubinage occurred as frequently in England as elsewhere in late medieval Europe and that priests and their concubines were, to some extent, socially and culturally accepted in late medieval England. -

E-mail: [email protected] CONCEPTUALIZED HETEROSEXUAL THEORY 2 Abstract Through the use of consensual qualitative research and interpretative phenomenology, the present study examined how 50 heterosexually identified counselors-trainees conceptualized their sexual identity development. The results provide support for Conceptualized Heterosexual Theory, which indicates that how heterosexual counselors conceptualize their sexual identity is related to four developmental dimensions: inherent orientation responses, pre-conceptualized heterosexuality, heterosexual identity development, and identification, directed towards 3 distinct identities: interdependent heterosexuality, independent heterosexuality, and unresolved heterosexuality. -

The Formation of Interpersonal Attraction and Intimate Relationships on Internet Relay Chat An Exploratory Study CHERRIE JOY F. BILLEDO This research investigated the formation of interpersonal attraction and intimate relationships on Internet Relay Chat (IRC). Two methods were employed: survey and in-depth interview. Purposive and convenience sampling were used for both methods. Results revealed that the formation of in-person and online interpersonal attraction and intimate relationships have similar initial stages of development. For online relationships however, partners have to undergo processes to shift from online to in-person. It was also shown that similar attraction cues were important online and in-person. A closer examination, however, showed that these attraction cues differ in salience and quality. This study contributes to the understanding of the impact of computer-mediated communication, particularly IRC, on the development of intimate relationships. The advent of computer-mediated communication (CMC) via the Internet, is believed to have significant implications on various aspects of human endeavor. People are not only meeting and interacting through the Internet; they are forming meaningful relationships as well. According to an article in Newsweek magazine, the phenomenon of online relationships is growing at a fast rate that it now warrants serious attention (Stone 2001). The Reconstruction of Gender and Sexuality in a Drag Show*
DUCT TAPE, EYELINER, AND HIGH HEELS: THE RECONSTRUCTION OF GENDER AND SEXUALITY IN A DRAG SHOW* Rebecca Hanson University of Montevallo Montevallo, Alabama Abstract. “Gender blending” is found on every continent; the Hijras in India, the female husbands in Navajo society, and the travestis in Brazil exemplify so-called “third genders.” The American version of a third gender may be drag queen performers, who confound, confuse, and directly challenge commonly held notions about the stability and concrete nature of both gender and sexuality. Drag queens suggest that specific gender performances are illusions that require time and effort to produce. While it is easy to dismiss drag shows as farcical entertainment, what is conveyed through comedic expression is often political, may be used as social critique, and can be indicative of social values. Drag shows present a protest against commonly held beliefs about the natural, binary nature of gender and sexuality systems, and they challenge compulsive heterosexuality. This paper presents the results of my observational study of drag queens. In it, I describe a “routine” drag show performance and some of the interactions and scripts that occur between the performers and audience members. I propose that drag performers make dichotomous American conceptions of sexuality and gender problematical, and they redefine homosexuality and transgenderism for at least some audience members. * I would like to thank Dr. Stephen Parker for all of his support during the writing of this paper. Semen Arousal: Its Prevalence, Relationship to HIV Risk Practices

It also looks at the relationship between semen arousal and involvement in HIV risk practices, and the factors associated with higher levels of semen arousal. Methods: 332 men who used any of 16 websites targeting unprotected sex completed 90-minute telephone interviews. Both quantitative and qualitative data were collected. A random sampling strategy was used. Semen arousal was assessed by four questions asking men how much they were turned on by the way that semen smelled, tasted, looked, and felt. Results: 65.1% of the men found at least one sensory aspect of semen to be “fairly” or “very” arousing, compared to 10.2% being “not very” or “not at all” aroused by all four sensory aspects of semen. Multivariate analysis revealed that semen arousal was related to greater involvement in HIV risk practices, even when the impact of other salient factors such as demographic characteristics, HIV serostatus, and psychological functioning was taken into account. Five factors were found to underlie greater levels of semen arousal: not being African American, self-identification as a sexual “bottom,” being better educated, being HIV-positive, and being more depressed. -

It is during this time that people consolidate their sexual orientation and enter into their first mature, and often long term, sexual relationships. This movement towards mature sexuality also has a number of gender-specific issues as males and females often experience sexuality differently. As people age, these differences are often marked. In addition to young and middle age adults, the elderly are often an overlooked group when it comes to discussion of sexuality. Sexuality, however, continues well into what are often considered the golden years. This course will review the development of sexuality using a lifespan perspective. Trends show a decline in traditional forms of dating, suggesting that casual sexual interaction, often referred to as "hooking up," has become an alternative to traditional exclusive sexual relationships. Hook-ups are sexual encounters ranging from kissing to sexual intercourse. They are often within the context of a dating relationship short-lived, nonexclusive, and emotionally (Manning, Giordano, & Longmore, 2005), more shallow, with a purpose of one-time sexual than 60% of sexually active teenagers will activity (Glenn & Marquardt, 2001). Outstanding work from across the discipline was featured in panels, workshops, and roundtables across the two days of conferencing, and critical questions of race, politics, and violence were deservedly prioritized amid an increasingly urgent political climate. While this preconference served to advance the discipline’s efforts toward generating knowledge and healing social divides, it also symbolized the range of American sociology’s contributions to interdisciplinary knowledge on sexuality. Missing from the work presented at the pre-conference was any mention of asexualities. Sociological insights on asexuality (i.e. a lack of sexual attraction) have been very limited. While some sociologists have devoted attention toward asexualities in their work (e.g. Carrigan 2011; Cuthbert 2017; Dawson, Scott, and McDonnell 2018; Poston and Baumle 2010; Scherrer and Pfeffer 2017; Simula, Sumerau, and Miller 2019; Sumerau et al. 2018; Troia 2018; Vares 2018), the field more often contributes to the invisibility of asexuality than sheds light on it.
