Topics in Human Sexuality: Sexuality Across the Lifespan Adulthood/Male and Female Sexuality Introduction The development of sexuality is a lifelong process that begins in infancy. As we move from infancy to adolescence and adolescence to adulthood, there are many sexual milestones. While adolescent sexuality is a time in which sexual maturation, interest and experience surge, adult sexuality continues to be a time of sexual unfolding. It is during this time that people consolidate their sexual orientation and enter into their first mature, and often long term, sexual relationships. This movement towards mature sexuality also has a number of gender-specific issues as males and females often experience sexuality differently. As people age, these differences are often marked. In addition to young and middle age adults, the elderly are often an overlooked group when it comes to discussion of sexuality. Sexuality, however, continues well into what are often considered the golden years. This course will review the development of sexuality using a lifespan perspective. It will focus on sexuality in adulthood and in the elderly. It will discuss physical and psychological milestones connected with adult sexuality. Educational Objectives 1. FCS2279 "Hooking Up" and Hanging Out: Casual Sexual Behavior Among Adolescents and Young Adults Today1 Christy Daniel and Kate Fogarty2 Current Trends in Adolescent and Young Adults' Sexuality Adolescents' and young adults' sexual attitudes and behaviors have gotten a lot of attention from researchers, the media, and policy makers in the past decade. Trends show a decline in traditional forms of dating, suggesting that casual sexual interaction, often referred to as "hooking up," has become an alternative to traditional exclusive sexual relationships. Hook-ups are sexual encounters ranging from kissing to sexual intercourse. They are often within the context of a dating relationship short-lived, nonexclusive, and emotionally (Manning, Giordano, & Longmore, 2005), more shallow, with a purpose of one-time sexual than 60% of sexually active teenagers will activity (Glenn & Marquardt, 2001). A Survey of Dating and Marriage at BYU Bruce A. Chadwick, Brent L. Top, Richard J. McClendon, Lauren Smith, and Mindy Judd 2001 study of 1,000 young women attending four-year colleges and A universities across the United States conducted by Norval Glenn and Elizabeth Marquardt found that “dating” has all but disappeared from American college campuses. Only half of the women reported they had been asked on six or more dates during their entire college career. In fact, one-third of the women had two or fewer dates during the same four years.1 Instead of dating, college students now “hang out” in mixed groups in a variety of settings including apartments, dormitory rooms, student centers, pizza parlors, coffee shops, and bars. From these associations young people may pair off and “hook up” with a member of the opposite sex. In the Glenn and Marquardt study, “hooking up” was defined as “when a girl and a guy get together for a sexual encounter and don’t necessarily expect anything further.” Forty percent of the women in the study had participated in a hookup, and over 90 percent indicated that hooking up is a regular activity on their campus.2 The level of physical intimacy involved in a hookup remains ambiguous in student conversations, meaning any- thing from kissing to sexual intercourse. The ambiguity of the term allows students to tell others that they have hooked up without completely com- promising their reputation. Some college students applaud that hanging out and hooking up carry no commitment or responsibility such as exclusiv- ity or the designation of the relationship as girlfriend and boyfriend. -

Dating violence often starts with teasing and name calling. These behaviors are often thought to be a "normal" part of a relationship. But these behaviors can set the stage for more serious violence. What is Dating Violence? Dating Violence is defined as the physical, sexual, or psychological/emotional violence within a dating relationship, as well as stalking. It can occur in person or electronically and may occur between a current or former dating partner. You may have heard several different words used to describe teen dating violence. Here are just a few: • Relationship Abuse • Intimate Partner Violence • Relationship Violence • Dating Abuse • Domestic Abuse • Domestic Violence Dating violence means violence committed by a person— • Who is or has been in a social relationship of a romantic or intimate nature with the victim; and • Where the existence of such a relationship shall be determined based on a consideration of the following factors: The length of the relationship; The type of relationship; and The frequency of interaction between the persons involved in the relationship. Dating violence is a type of intimate partner violence. It occurs between two people in a close relationship. The nature of dating violence can be physical, emotional, or sexual. • Physical—This occurs when a partner is pinched, hit, shoved, slapped, punched, or kicked. • Psychological/Emotional—This means threatening a partner or harming his or her sense of self-worth. Examples include name calling, shaming, bullying, embarrassing on purpose, or keeping him/her away from friends and family. -

The nature of intimacy is an interaction pattern, as both your messages and your partner’s responses make a conversation an intimate interaction. A. Intimate relationships are those that have highly interdependent partners who are committed to each other, understand and trust one another deeply, and disclose in depth as well as breadth. B. Intimate interactions are a series of conversations between partners that nurture interdependence, commitment, understanding, trust, and disclosure. II. There are three types of close relationships: long-term romantic relationships, family relationships, and friendships. A. Long-term romantic relationships (LTRRs) are those enduring romantic relationships that are intimate and where partners have made some type of long-term commitment to each other. 1. There are characteristics of successful long-term romantic relationships. a. Mutual respect, which is showing regard or consideration for your partner, that person’s point of view, and that person’s rights. b. Presence of a shared plan or life vision c. Comfortable level of closeness. Partners in LTRRs experience a comfortable level of closeness when they are satisfied with the amount and quality of their romantic encounters, affection displays, and time they spend together. 2. There are challenges in long-term relationships. a. Maintaining intimacy 1.) Relational maintenance is exchanging messages or behaving in ways that keep a relationship at a desired level of intimacy, satisfaction, and health. 2.) Routine relational maintenance happens when messages and behaviors that are performed without any deliberate intention to affect the relationship have the effect of preserving the intimacy. -

Barker and others, 2012 3 Foreword Meg John Barker Back in 2012 when we produced The Bisexuality Report, my co-authors and I struggled with a few things. There was the lack of evidence regarding the experience of bisexual people in the UK – particularly those outside of the official ‘bisexual community’ – to support the findings from other countries. There was the absence of in-depth qualitative data from UK-based bisexual people to illustrate our points, particularly regarding experiences of services - which is so necessary if we are to fight for improvement in those areas. And there was the dearth of material anywhere regarding people whose bisexuality intersected with other marginalised identities and experiences. This in particular was something we subsequently hugely regretted giving such a small amount of space to, given its vital importance and the danger of suggesting shared experience where actually there is so much diversity. For these reasons – and so many more – I am extremely grateful to the Equality Network for producing ‘Complicated?’. -

Harris2 The American author Mignon McLaughlin insightfully stated that “a successful marriage requires falling in love many times, always with the same person.” Successful marriages can provide many benefits, including increased economic, physical, mental, and emotional well-being (Institute for American Values, 2002). Conversely, there are significant potential costs associated with divorce, such as stress, depression, and economic insecurity (Schramm, 2009). High divorce rates may reflect a growing emphasis on personal freedom and self-fulfillment and a dwindling commitment to long-term relationships. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the state of Missouri, as follows: Section A. Section 170.015, RSMo, is repealed and one new section enacted in lieu 2 thereof, to be known as section 170.015, to read as follows: 170.015 1. As used in this section, the following terms mean: 2 (1) "Abortion", the same meaning as such term is defined in section 188.015; 3 (2) "Abortion services": 4 (a) Performing, inducing, or assisting in the performance or inducing of an 5 abortion that is not necessary to save the life of the mother; 6 (b) Encouraging a patient to have an abortion or referring a patient for an abortion 7 that is not necessary to save the life of the mother; or 8 (c) Developing or dispensing drugs, chemicals, or devices intended to be used to 9 induce an abortion that is not necessary to save the life of the mother; 10 (3) "Gender identity", the meaning provided in the Diagnostic and Statistical 11 Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th Edition, referred to as the "DSM-5"; 12 (4) "Sexual orientation", an individual's actual or perceived orientation as 13 heterosexual, homosexual, or bisexual. 14 2. 1 Introducing LGBTQ psychology Overview * What is LGBTQ psychology and why study it? * The scientific study of sexuality and ‘gender ambiguity’ * The historical emergence of ‘gay affirmative’ psychology * Struggling for professional recognition and challenging heteronormativity in psychology What is LGBTQ psychology and why study it? For many people it is not immediately obvious what lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and queer (LGBTQ) psychology is (see the glossary for defini- tions of words in bold type). Is it a grouping for LGBTQ people working in psychology? Is it a branch of psychology about LGBTQ people? Although LGBTQ psychology is often assumed to be a support group for LGBTQ people working in psychology, it is in fact the latter: a branch of psychology concerned with the lives and experiences of LGBTQ people. Sometimes it is suggested that this area of psychology would be more accurately named the ‘psychology of sexuality’. Although LGBTQ psychology is concerned with sexuality, it has a much broader focus, examining many different aspects of the lives of LGBTQ people including prejudice and discrimination, parenting and families, and com- ing out and identity development. One question we’re often asked is ‘why do we need a separate branch of psychology for LGBTQ people?’ There are two main reasons for this: first, as we discuss in more detail below, until relatively recently most psychologists (and professionals in related disciplines such as psychiatry) supported the view that homosexuality was a mental illness. ‘Gay affirmative’ psychology, as this area was first known in the 1970s, developed to challenge this perspective and show that homosexuals are psychologically healthy, ‘normal’ individuals.
