  • Paralympics New Zealand Spirit of Gold® Fundraising Toolkit Mufti Day – Friday 21 August 2020 Welcome
Paralympics New Zealand Spirit of Gold® Fundraising Toolkit Mufti Day – Friday 21 August 2020 Welcome Paralympics New Zealand (PNZ) is the National Paralympic Committee for New Zealand. We are members of the International Paralympic Committee and part of a worldwide social change movement, which uses the power of sport to positively influence community perceptions of disabled people and to promote a more diverse and inclusive society. We also work in the local community to advocate for sport to become more accessible for disabled people and to support programmes to enable participation in Para sport. PNZ is enormously grateful for the donations that help to make our Para sport programmes possible. This assists us to take exceptional teams to the Paralympic Games, invest in the Paralympians of the future and continue our work in advocating for societal change with a particular focus on promoting inclusion. New Zealand’s Paralympians are exceptional role models for all Kiwis, with amazing stories of resilience and perseverance. We encourage you to take this opportunity to learn more about our sporting heroes, disability and Para sport. Your support by taking part in the Spirit of Gold® Mufti Day is gratefully received, as the funds raised will assist us to be prepared for the rescheduled Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games and beyond. Fiona Allan Chief Executive, Paralympics New Zealand Thank you! Thank you for agreeing to support Paralympics New Zealand (PNZ) by taking part in our annual Spirit of Gold® Mufti Day on Friday 21 August 2020. Golden Glories, Broken Hearts & Smashed Records I’m sipping a smoothie as I sit opposite a sporting superstar in the unassuming setting of Frenz Café at the AUT Millennium Institute. I can’t help but think it’s perhaps an incongruous spot in which to interview an Olympian, multiple world and Commonwealth champion and reigning World Athlete of the Year. But, once you get chatting to Valerie Adams, you soon realise that she too, is just as unassuming. A young girl sits next to the athlete and asks for a selfie. Adams obliges, asking about her school, her family and her friends. The young girl, with almost comedic stubbornness, remains seated at the athlete’s side as we continue the chat but Valerie is all warmth, smiles and patience. A couple of hints are dropped, but the girl is too young – and in awe – to take them. Ten minutes later she leaves on her own terms. Words: Jamie Christian Desplaces “You know, I’m just Val,” Adams tells me. “What you see is what Their relationship began with some rather blunt advice. “I was 20 you get. People think I live this extraordinary life, but it’s pretty kilos heavier when we first met up,” says Valerie, “and he told me normal. I get up early, eat breakfast in my apartment and then I needed to lose it. I could have taken that in a negative way, but I train all day. I come home shattered. I shower, eat, sleep then didn’t. I lost the weight in three months to show him how serious do it all over again.” Her upbringing, she says, installed strong I was and six months later I won the World Championship with a values: “We didn’t have much.

I will have to apologise for this “divide and conquer attitude” of the NRC. Up until last week the nearest drop in, as so called, was at Waitangi on Monday 10th April and because of the time restraints only 21 days submissions closed we asked them to come to Doves Bay to have a normal meeting where they would address us and questions asked from the floor. This request was re- fused and therefore we had to agree to their format. NRC has contacted us since the meeting where they have suggested that any members that did not get their questions answered to submit a written question to the club’s office. They are prepared to come back and address the written questions. I hope I can rally the clubs in the BOI to make submissions on the NRC marine pathway management plan. I attended with Melanie, a meeting at Opua with all the marina reps in the NRC region to collate a response to the NRC Marine Pathway. I urge all boat owners to put a submission in, as this is your only opportunity to voice your opinion on the selected charge and implantation.
