The latest one has arisen because the centre has many animal lovers among staff and members. “The SPCA seemed like a great charity to help,” she said. The animal charity’s annual national fundraiser, SPCA Cupcake Day 2021, is scheduled for Monday, August 2. “We have put our own spin on the Cupcake Day as we weren’t too sure if selling lots of cupcakes at the gym would do very well.” Luisa says the fundraiser workout is a good way for people to start their Sunday, and will cater for all fitness levels. “They will get a little muffin or cupcake for their efforts and there may be some adorable puppies running around from the local SPCA that are looking for their forever homes.” YMCA Gisborne Les Mills group fitness trainer Frauke Nieschmidt says the key focus at the Y is to build a social connection with members, and to dial up their fitness experience in a fun way. “When you feel connected to others during a workout, you can feel the collective energy in the group. “Holding events such as the SPCA fundraiser allows us to come together with our members to share common interests or things we value in our community that are outside exercise.” Luisa says people have already signed up for the spin class and many more are keen to book. “A lot of people might book at the last minute because of their busy schedules.” The YMCA is also running a photo competition for which people can email pictures with their pets and go into a draw to win a prize. Entries for the competition can be emailed to [email protected] The competition ends on Friday, August 6.
