Broadscale surveys by implementing underwater visual census and photographic sampling in marine caves of the northeastern Mediterranean Sea, within different expeditions during the last 5 years, brought to light new records of eight rarely reported cryptobenthic fish species. To a smaller extent, complementary citizen science data from diving professionals of Crete were used to fill distribution gaps. A total of 36 new records (66 individuals) from 18 marine caves and caverns of the Aegean and northeast- ern Levantine Seas were assembled, belonging to the gobies Corcyrogobius liechtensteini, Didogobius splechtnai, Gammogobius steinitzi, and Thorogobius ephippiatus, the blenny Microlipophrys nigriceps, the tripterygiid Tripterygion melanurum, the speleophilic bythitid Grammonus ater, and the gobiesocid Citation: Ragkousis, M.; Digenis, M.; Lepadogaster lepadogaster Kovaˇci´c,M.; Katsanevakis, S.; cf.

  • A Quantitative Assessment of the Cryptobenthic Fish Assemblage at Deep Littoral Cliffs in the Mediterranean

E-mail: [email protected]. Summary: The present study provides the first quantitative assessment of cryptobenthic fish species diversity and abundance on hard bottoms below 20 m depth by examining Mediterranean underwater reefs with deep vertical cliffs. Quantitative sam- pling was performed at depths down to about 45 m and yielded 220 cryptobenthic and 61 epibenthic individuals belonging to 21 species, showing that the cryptobenthic fishes highly outnumbered the epibenthic individuals. The study highlights the high diversity and abundance of this unexplored part of the benthic fish community. The cryptobenthic fish assemblage was dominated by the family Gobiidae in terms of both biodiversity (>60% of all species) and abundance (>90% of all speci- mens). Fish species previously considered rare were present and some of them were even numerous in this assemblage. Three out of fourteen recorded habitat variables (depth, rocky cliff surface area vs. the bottom of the cliff area, and the presence of sand as the bottom substrate) were identified as significant for species occurrence. Species were generalist in their choice of shelters since the size and quantity of semi-caves, caves, cavities and even bio-cover type had no significant influence on the species distribution and abundance.

Rostocker Meeresbiologische Beiträge Zur Fauna des Mittelmeeres Heft 18 30 Studies on the ichthyofauna of the coastal waters of Ibiza (Balearic Islands, Spain) By Stefan Fischer1*, Robert A. Patzner2, Carsten H.G. Müller1,3 1 & Helmut M. Winkler FISCHER ST., PATZNER R. A., MÜLLER C. H.G. & H. M. WINKLER (2007): Studies on the ichthyofauna of the coastal waters of Ibiza (Balearic Islands, Spain). Rostocker Meeresbiologische Beiträge 18: S. 30-62 Abstract. In the framework of several field excursions to the Balearic Island of Ibiza (Western Mediterranean Sea) conducted every spring and autumn between 1998 and 2007, extensive studies were carried out on the structure, diversity and ecology of the coastal ichthyofauna. The ichthyofaunistic observations were made in the months of March, April, September and October in the course of snorkeling and scuba diving in the upper infralittoral of the coastal waters (0 to 40 m depth), including sandy and rocky substrates showing various degrees of exposition to sunlight and wave action, as well as sea grass beds (Posidonia oceanica). All in all, we were able to detect 130 species of fish distributed among 43 families. The highest diversity was shown by the Gobiidae (20 species), followed by the Blenniidae with 15, the Labridae with 14 and the Sparidae with 11 species. We also observed some species that are known to be rare in the upper infralittoral, such as Zeus faber for example. Besides providing a standard species list, we also present interesting aut- and synecological data for most taxa recorded. Special attention was paid to associations between different fish species and associations between fishes and invertebrates.

Here, we infer the timing and geographic origins of Mediterranean teleost species diversity using nucleotide sequences collected from GenBank. We assembled a DNA supermatrix composed of four mitochondrial genes (12S ribosomal DNA, 16S ribosomal DNA, cytochrome c oxidase subunit I and cytochrome b) and two nuclear genes (rhodopsin and recombination activating gene I), including 62% of Mediterranean teleost species plus 9 outgroups. Maximum likelihood and Bayesian phylogenetic and dating analyses were calibrated using 20 fossil constraints. An additional 124 species were grafted onto the chronogram according to their taxonomic affinity, checking for the effects of taxonomic coverage in subsequent diversification analyses. We then interpreted the time-line of teleost diversification in light of Mediterranean historical biogeography, distinguishing non- endemic natives, endemics and exotic species. Results show that the major Mediterranean orders are of Cretaceous origin, specifically ,100–80 Mya, and most Perciformes families originated 80–50 Mya. Two important clade origin events were detected.
