PASSAGES

StarTrek.com is saddened to report that veteran character and iconic Star Trek guest star Michael Ansara passed away on July 31 at the age of 91 following a long illness. Ansara had a remarkably long and prolific career that spanned from 1944 to 2001 and included Abbott and Costello Meet the Mummy, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, Broken Arrow (on which he starred as ), The Fugitive, , , It's Alive, in the 25th Century, Fantasy Island, Murder, She Wrote, and such late-career animated projects as , SubZero, and his final credit, 2001's Batman: Vengeance; he voiced Dr. Victor Fries/Mr. Freeze in all of those Batman iterations. Star Trek fans, of course, embraced Ansara for his performance as the commander, Kang, in the Star Trek: The Original Series episode "." Later, when Star Trek exploded into a cultural phenomenon, Ansara became a favorite at conventions and on cruises. Decades passed and, in 1994, Ansara made a triumphant return to televised Trek, reprising his role as Kang in the Deep Space Nine hour "Blood Oath." Ansara played Kang yet again in the 1996 Voyager episode "Flashback" and portrayed an entirely different character, Lwaxana Troi's Tavnian spouse, Jeyal, in the 1996 Deep Space Nine episode "The Muse."

Michael Ansara as Kang in “Day of the Dove” and as Kang again in “Blood Oath”

Ansara was preceded in death by Matthew, his son with second wife, I Dream of Jeannie actress . He is survived by wife, Beverly Kushida..

IT’S THE CAPTAIN CALLING

On Monday, 19 August, 22 gallant members of the DaVinci crew converged upon Cafe Le' Rue in Columbus, GA for our monthly night out. This was a rather small location and there was not much room left in the dining hall once we were all seated; however, the waitress did an outstanding job of taking care of us and everyone thoroughly enjoyed their meals. J.R. Ferguson, who is one of our newest members and our new Security Officer, attended as his first event with us and brought his two beautiful daughters, Gabby and Maddie. They also were dressed in trek shirts, which was wonderful! Starfleet Order of Merit certificates for the Order of Babel in the area of recruiting were awarded to Joe Perry, Jeff Kirkland and Randy Dunn for their contributions during the Trek movie premier in May 2013.

Russell presents the Order of Babel to Jeff, Joe, and Randy

This was the Houser family's last official event with us due to Robert's new assignment at Fort Hood, TX in September. Cami was presented a Meritorious Service Certificate and the family was given a Certificate of Appreciation on behalf of the entire crew. Adding to the occasion, Cami's name was drawn as the winner of the free meal for August.

NEXT DAVINCI NIGHT OUT AND MEMBERSHIP MEETING WILL BE AT CANNON BREW PUB ON MONDAY 16 SEPTEMBER 7:00 PM COME FOR THE FOOD AND FRIENDSHIP !!

Russell presents Cami with a Meritorious Service Certificate and a Certificate of Appreciation to the whole Houser clan

The Captain's perks were won by Cara who received an action figure from the first Trek reboot movie and Janet won a Hamilton collector's plate of CPT Sisko from Deep Space Nine. Jeff was given the floor to speak briefly about the upcoming Highland Games at Stone Mountain, GA coming in October with the suggestion of an away mission for interested crewmembers. The crew closed the evening out around 8:30PM and headed home.

Look what we won! Cami (free meal), Janet (Deep Space Nine plate), and Cara (Sulu action figure)

And now for some fun-filled future events. On the 14 September there will be a “Jurassic Park” marathon at Freddy’s house beginning at 12:00 PM. Snacks will be provided but you must bring your own drink. Connie will prepare some exciting munchies for the viewing so make sure you let Freddy know if you are planning on attending. Our annual “Goodbye Summer, Hello Fall” cookout will be held on Saturday, 21 August at Freddy and Connie’s house beginning at 2:00 PM. The DaVinci will buy the burgers and hotdogs. The rest of the food will come from you. So, if you wish to attend this event please let Freddy know how many in you party and what you are planning on bringing! Dutch has another special event scheduled for the Coca Cola Space Science Center. On Saturday, 05 October 2013 from 10:30 AM to 5:00 PM will be the 7 th annual Sci-Fi MiniCon and as always, the USS DaVinci will have a membership drive table on site. Volunteers are needed to assist Dutch with the event and for “Randy's Kitchen.” You can contact them both for more information. For those of you who hold an active Starfleet membership, this is an election year for the new Starfleet Commander. I am officially making my endorsement at this time for the Killough/Bates ticket (the DaVinci editor prefers the other ticket). By the time you receive this newsletter, ballots will have been sent out and I highly encourage you to vote and return your ballots promptly. You can find out more about the candidates thru the sfi.org website. Oh, one final note. Every member of the USS DaVinci is a truly valued part of our crew. We appreciate everyone's contributions and attendance at our events. You have helped make our chapter the best in Region 2 and a shining example within the Starfleet Fan Association. Having attained over 100 members in our chapter is an accomplishment all of you can be proud of. There are; however, several of our crew whose membership both in the DaVinci and in Starfleet have lapsed in the last couple of months and I would like to personally ask that you take some time to consider your renewal at the earliest convenience. Starfleet membership rates will be changing effective 01 January 2014 with a lower rate for a newly established electronic membership and a small increase for those who wish to continue receiving the paper membership materials. Take the time to renew today. You'll be glad you did! That's all for this month. Warp speed ahead in 2013!

COMMUNITY SERVICE

Greetings officers and crewmates. I hope everyone is well and have been keeping hydrated from this summers heat. Now the temperatures are changing, so make sure to keep an eye on the thermometer. Stay safe please. Have y’all been saving the pop tabs? We are getting closer to our goal! Also have you been clipping the manufacture coupons for our military folks overseas? They do appreciate getting them. Also, do not forget the Box Tops or Labels for Education and your spare change for the Christmas Jar. I hope so because I'm sure there is a deserving family out there that may need it. Well that is about it for me. If you have any ideas or suggestions call or e-mail me. I'm wide open to suggestions. Til next time

SICKBAY

I am organizing an Away Mission to go to the Stone Mountain Highland Games. It will take place on 19 October. At the games there will be all types of competitions: Piping, Highland Dancing, Harp Playing, Caber Toss, Stone Of Strength, Sheaf Toss, Weight Toss and Weight Throw, Hammer Throw. There is even an area for wee competition for the children. A live Highland Cattle, Scottish Foods, Musical Entertainment, shops, and so much more. You can also join in and learn some Scottish Country Dancing. There will be plenty of clan tents (family tents) to visit around the woods. Mother and I will base out of the Douglas Clan Tent, right in front of the harp competition tent. You can look up your clan and join your or any clan you want. The only thing that will stop mother and I from going will be a day of rain. Come and join us for a day of fun and enjoyment. For more information go to: www.smhg.org.

RED SHIRT SURVIVAL TIPS

Greetings, I am J.R. Furgerson and am onee of the newest members to join the DaVinci. I have also been given the privilege to serve as your Chief of Security and would like to express how honored I am to do so. A little bit about myself. I am a former Deputy Sheriff from Troup County, GA with 10 years of experience and have also served as a field-training officer in the Detention facility. I am the proud father of two beautiful 6-year-old twin daughters (Madison and Gabrielle) who I am slowly turning into Trek fans. I am in a relationship with fellow new member of the DaVinci, and my best friend, Kelly Williamson. Well, enough about me. Lets get down to the nitty gritty. Face it; it’s a brutal world out there (especially for a red shirt like me!). So if you’re going to survive you better be tough, and I’m not just talking about physical toughness. I mean mental toughness. I’m talking about being prepared for whatever danger you might encounter and being able to overcome and survive. So, since I have a wealth of safety knowledge in my head not being used I figured I’d share it with all of you. Have you ever been sound asleep in your bed at night only to be awakened by strange noises right outside your house? How many of you have crept around the hallways clinching a Louisville Slugger or your great granddaddy’s cowboy pistol just in case a burglar made those noises? It can be pretty scary sometimes especially if you live by yourself. Well here is a suggestion that I can guarantee most of you haven’t even thought about. Do you have a car with keyless entry? If so, does your door clicker have a panic button on it? When you walk in the door instead of tossing the keys on the counter or table or where ever, why not keep them on your nightstand or under your pillow when you go to sleep? That way if you suspect that a home invasion is imminent you can simply grab the keys and set off the alarm. As long as the burglar isn’t deaf it should send the dastardly devil running away as fast as his Chuck Taylor’s can carry him! This will also most likely wake a few neighbors who might go to their windows and catch a glimpse of the guy running away. That way they can help you describe the moron to the authorities. I hope this was helpful and insightful information. I’m not the sharpest knife in the drawer but I do get it right every once in a while! Hopefully, I’ll have a new safety suggestion each month and will be able to continue to think of new ways to help keep you safe! Thanks for reading and LONG LIVE RED SHIRTS (LOL)!

COLUMBUS COMIC BOOK SHOW On 04 August a several crew personnel worked the annual Comic Book Show at the Coca Cola Space Science Center. As usual, the DaVinci had a membership drive table set up and Randy had his “kitchen” set up to serve good food from the 13 th Street Barbeque to the hungry attendees. The crowd was a steady stream of costumed and un-costumed folks. Many stopped by the DaVinci table to talk Trek or were just curious. Quite often they would ask to have their picture taken with one of us as we were all in our uniforms. A BIG Bajorn thanks to all the folks who worked the show and those who dropped by to say hello! We picked up a couple new memberships from folks who had been out of the DaVinci for quite a while, so welcome back Phil and Tammy and the rest of their family and welcome back Everett. Dutch said the Comic Book Show was a success and there will certainly be more in the future so stick around for all the latest information! Check out some photos from the show.

At the 2013 International Conference (IC) in Dallas, TX the Admiralty Board (AB) was presented with and voted in, a membership rate change, which, for the first time, included those individuals who prefer to get their membership material via email (electronic). Note that “e” memberships are much less. I am not sure when this goes into effect so if you prefer a paper membership and plan on renewing I would advise you do it now.

For Electronic Memberships: For Paper Memberships: Individual - $10 Individual - $20 Family of 2 - $15 Family of 2 - $25 Family of 3 - $17 Family of 3 - $27 Family of 4 - $19 Family of 4 - $29 Family of 5 - $21 Family of 5 - $31 Family of 6 - $23 Family of 6 - $33

STARFLEET INTERNATION CONFERENCE The Admiral's shuttle departed Phenix City, AL on the 25 th of July for a family oriented away mission in Dallas, TX. It worked out pretty well because my sister Muriel, who lives in Dallas, was getting married a week prior to the International Conference (IC). Not only did I have the privilege of officiating the wedding ceremony, but I also had the honor of walking her down the aisle. The ceremony was very heartwarming and I had the chance to see my oldest sister and my mom as well who came from California for the wedding. We spent the rest of the week with my niece and her family and did some shopping in the Dallas area. On Friday, 2 August we made the 25-mile drive from my niece's home to the IC Hotel. The hotel had very nice accommodations with all the trimmings and breakfast with eggs to order. Joe was already on site, arriving the day prior. We met up with our dear friends and former members of the DaVinci, Steve and TJ Gordon, having dinner at the local Waffle House across the street from the hotel. We also met with another of our former members, Jonathan Evans, who came from Colorado to attend the festivities. Opening ceremonies were held on Friday evening and we retired to our room afterward to get some rest. General session began Saturday at 9:30 AM. Vaughn Armstrong, who played the role of Admiral Forrester on the Enterprise TV series, was a special guest at this year's IC. Saturday's general session went well and I got to see our friend, Jim Brunton, promoted to the rank of Admiral. We went to lunch at McDonalds and came back for my Chaplain/Counselor panel. Then it was back to the room to dress for the banquet. The décor was impressive and the meal was great. Diane had beef and I had pork loin with all the trimmings. There was strawberry cheesecake for desert and I managed to consume three slices of this delightful dish. The auction was after supper and I obtained a new game for us to play at one of our events. The game is called “Red Shirts” to which I understand that the object of the game is to be the one killed first! How bout' that! The auction was taking a very long time so we retired for the evening. Sunday brought with it the morning non-denominational service to which I officiated. We had 13 in attendance. Closing ceremonies were directly afterward and once we got a picture taken of Joe, Diane and myself for the record we departed for home with an overnight stop at the Mississippi/Louisiana border next to the Mississippi river. The Mississippi River is a spectacular sight on a clear evening at sunset. Check out some photos from the trip!

Russell with his mom and sisters, Judy and Muriel and Vaughn Armstrong pies IC Chair Marion Murphy

Starfleet Commander Dave Blaser “thanks” the volunteer and the DaVinci crew at the IC

The next morning we continued our drive home and the Admiral's shuttle docked in home port around 4:30 PM on Monday afternoon. Next year's IC will be held in Illinois but there was some difficulty with the 2015 bids so we were not able to get information on that location yet. All in all, it was a wonderful weekend of fun, fellowship and fandom.

TAB ULATIONS

Every month we get closer and closer to the one-millionth tab! The big change this month was a huge donation of 7,800+ tabs from Jessie, which zoomed her past Freddy for third place in the standings. Newcomer JR has joined in on the fun with a small but important donation. Remember to keep those tabs coming because you could be the big winner! Just as a reminder Connie and Freddy’s totals do not count until the one-millionth tab is donated and the winner is announced, so keep saving those tabs. We still have a ways to go! Current list follows:
