  • Bishop Otter College Guild Newsletter 2018
Bishop Otter College Guild Newsletter 2018 Guild Newsletter 2018 | 3 Welcome to the Bishop Otter College Guild Newsletter 2018 We are very excited to announce the return of the Jean Lurçat tapestry to the Chapel of the Ascension after six years. The tapestry had not been taken down since its installation in the early 1960s and although it was in very good condition it showed evidence of dye fading due to over exposure to high light levels, a few areas of abraded weft particularly at shoulder and arm height and it was very dusty. The work undertaken by conservator Zenzie Tinker (pictured below) has addressed the damage caused by dust and abrasion and the tapestry has been raised to reduce the risk of people brushing against it when using the altar. The issue of UV damage remains but the tapestry will now be checked annually by the conservator to assess its condition. The Chapel of the Ascension has played a central role in the life of the University since its creation and we are thrilled to be able to showcase the tapestry once more. We invite our alumni back to campus to view the tapestry either before or during the Bishop Otter Guild Reunion. If you would like to visit please get in touch with the Alumni Team who will be happy to arrange a visit for you. 01243 812171 [email protected] 2 | Guild Newsletter 2018 Bishop Otter College Guild President Professor Clive Behagg Vice-Presidents Dr Colin Greaves Professor Philip E D Robinson Honorary Secretary Mr Marten Lougee 11 Meadow Close Cononley, Keighley West Yorkshire BD20 8LZ 01535 636487

  • No Limits Freediving
1 No Limits Freediving "The challenges to the respiratory function of the breath-hold diver' are formidable. One has to marvel at the ability of the human body to cope with stresses that far exceed what normal terrestrial life requires." Claes Lundgren, Director, Center for Research and Education in Special Environments A woman in a deeply relaxed state floats in the water next to a diving buoy. She is clad in a figure-hugging wetsuit, a dive computer strapped to her right wrist, and another to her calf. She wears strange form-hugging silicone goggles that distort her eyes, giving her a strange bug-eyed appearance. A couple of meters away, five support divers tread water near a diving platform, watching her perform an elaborate breathing ritual while she hangs onto a metal tube fitted with two crossbars. A few meters below the buoy, we see that the metal tube is in fact a weighted sled attached to a cable descending into the dark-blue water. Her eyes are still closed as she begins performing a series of final inhalations, breathing faster and faster. Photographers on the media boats snap pictures as she performs her final few deep and long hyperventilations, eliminating carbon dioxide from her body. Then, a thumbs-up to her surface crew, a pinch of the nose clip, one final lungful of air, and the woman closes her eyes, wraps her knees around the bottom bar of the sled, releases a brake device, and disappears gracefully beneath the waves. The harsh sounds of the wind and waves suddenly cease and are replaced by the effervescent bubbling of air being released from the regulators of scuba-divers.

  • Chimpanzees ( Pan Troglodytes Verus ) and Ful Ɓe Pastoralists
Predicting conflict over scarce resources: Chimpanzees ( Pan troglodytes verus ) and Ful ɓe pastoralists by Brooke E. Massa Dr. Jennifer Swenson, Advisor May 2011 Masters project submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Master of Environmental Management degree in the Nicholas School of the Environment of Duke University 2011 MP Advisor's signature Cover photo: A pruned Khaya senegalensis tree stands, surrounded by its cut branches. Also known as African mahogany , the tree is prized not only for the fodder it provides, but also as a strong wood, often used to craft farming tools. Khaya senegalensis is considered a vulnerable species by the IUCN and is protected by several West African governments. 2 Abstract The western chimpanzee ( Pan troglodytes verus ) is considered the most endangered subspecies of chimpanzee. The populations living at the furthest extent of its range, in southern Senegal – a country situated directly south of the Sahara Desert - are considered to be nearly extinct. These ‘savanna chimpanzees’ have adapted to living in an arid environment and are now facing more threats to their survival as climate change and deforestation have forced nomadic pastoralists further into their habitat in search of fodder and water. Combining field-collected data on both chimpanzee and pastoralist habitat use with GIS and remote sensing data, I spatially predicted areas of potential habitat conflict among chimpanzees and pastoralists. Using species distribution modeling, I found that large swaths of forested habitat in Bandafassi are predicted to be used by nomadic pastoralists. Their presence is expected in 86 percent of the land which is predicted to be used by chimpanzees.
