FORGINGS 1847 Walker

Samuel Colt began production of a revolving- pistol on the day the Alamo fell in 1836. Produced at his factory in Paterson, New Jersey, Colt’s new pistol was enthusiastically received by the Rangers of the newly independent Republic of and in 1844 Colt’s pistol made history when sixteen Rangers held off 80 warriors with their new . Former Texas Ranger Sam Walker had been in the Comanche fight in 1844 and became a firm believer in Colt’s pistols. In 1846, war with Mexico was looming and Walker’s U.S. Mounted needed a powerful for mounted combat. Colt built a revolver for them that held 58 grains of black powder and chambered six, .44 balls. Sam Walker ordered 1,000 of them and rode off to Mexico. The Walker’s massive fire-power needed a much stronger frame and larger overall gun de- sign than earlier models—the Walker weighed nearly four-and-a-half pounds and was 15¾" long. The Walker’s reputation assured Colt’s future success.

Encouraged by an ongoing military contract, Colt turned his eye toward the civilian market 1862 POLICE —5 1” ANTIQUE FINISH (A00) in 1848. Civilian pocket revolvers, such as the Wells Fargo or 1849 Pocket, were .31 caliber pistols that fit easily in a coat pocket. Just as silver spring steel allowed Colt to adapt a .44 cylinder to a .36 frame, it permitted the .31 cal. 1849 Pocket revolver to be upgraded to a .36 cal. The 1862 Pocket Navy retains the octagon barrel and hinged loading lever of the 1851 Navy, while the 1862 Police model is a miniature of the 1860 Army, with fluted cylinder, streamlined round barrel and “creeping” loading lever. The Pocket and Police were the last two muzzle loading models to be produced by Colt and together they totalled approximately 47,000. About 19,000 were the model 1862 Pocket Navy.

The handy, more powerful revolver immediately found a following among soldiers and civilians alike and was eventually adopted by both the U.S. and the British military. By the start of the Civil War, Colt had refined the Navy into a sleek, streamlined weapon with an improved loading lever. The 1861 Navy is often acclaimed as Colt’s most handsome pistol. Colt worked to perfect his cap and ball revolver, designing the 1860 Army around a lightweight frame, but chambered for the more powerful .44 caliber ball. The first models featured fluted cylinders, while later models incorporated a belted cylinder for added strength and a “creeping” loading lever for easier loading. Revolver Carbine and Buntline

Legend has it that dime novelist, Ned Buntline presented special order Colt revolvers with long barrels and detachable shoulder stocks to , Bat Masterson and other noted Old West celebrities. Based on this story, the long-barreled “Peacemakers” with their special target sights came to be called “Buntline Specials.” Only 31 of the distinctive Buntline Specials were ever produced and only 18 of them still exist today. Revolving rifles and carbines were among the first effective repeating rifles. Models produced by Colt were carried in the Mexican War and the Apache Wars of the Old Southwest. Despite the popularity of the new lever-action rifles in the Old West, many manufacturers continued to offer special-order “carbine” versions of their popular single action revolvers. The Revolver Carbine is available with an 18” barrel in .45 caliber.

Keeping the solid frame and overall styling of their 1858 percussion model, Remington jumped into the cartridge revolver market in 1875, introducing a pistol to compete directly against the Colt “Peacemaker.” Ordinary citizens, outlaws and Old West lawmen alike recognized the sturdy quality of the new Remington; even Frank James carried one for much of his outlaw career. As faithful reproductions, the 1875 Outlaw revolvers is available in Frank’s favorite caliber, .45 Colt. Built from 1890 to 1896 in very small numbers, the Remington 1890 Police is one of the most prized cowboy revolvers among Old West collectors. Of the less than 2,000 produced, only a few Remington 1890s ever saw service as police revolvers and those primarily as sidearms for Indian police on reservations. The 1890 Police is chambered in .357 Magnum and .45 Colt and comes complete with a lanyard ring just like the original.

B. Tyler Henry of the New Haven Arms Company introduced a lever-action repeating rifle the year the Civil War began. Only 1,700 Henry rifles were issued to Union troops, but as the Henry ’s reputation grew, Southerners dubbed it “that tarnation Yankee rifle that they load on Sunday and shoot all week.” After the war, the Henry went West and there was more than one Henry rifle in the battle at Little Big Horn, but unfortunately for Custer, all of the Henrys were used by Indians. The early bronze-framed Henrys were followed by more rugged iron-framed models.

Uberti’s 1860 Henry is true to the original by featuring a lever lock located at the rear of the lever, and a convenient external cartridge follower, which aids in loading the tubular magazine. 1866 Yellowboy Carbine and Rifle

The 1866 Yellowboy was a marked improvement over the old Henry. Winchester’s plant superintendent, Nelson King, devised a convenient loading gate that passed cartridges through the side of the receiver. This not only made the new rifle more functional, but also allowed for the installation of a wooden fore-end. The handy carbine version of the 1866 Yellowboy was the first true cowboy lever-action rifle and was the first rifle widely carried in a cowboy-style saddle scabbard. The new 1866 Yellowboy was a hit worldwide. Chief Sitting Bull had an 1866, Benito Juarez’s forces used Yellowboys in Mexico and the Turkish army used the new Winchester against the Russians. Uberti has recreated three of the most popular models: the Yellowboy Carbine with a 19" barrel and carbine style brass buttplate, the Yellowboy Rifle with 24¼" barrel and Short Rifle with 20" barrel, both with a brass fore-end nose cap and a solid brass crescent buttplate.

Winchester’s Model 1873 was the “Rifle that Won the West.” The Model 1873 was chambered in a new more powerful cartridge, the .44/40 — a .44 caliber bullet propelled by 40 grains of black powder. However, one big factor that really insured the success of the 1873 was that Colt quickly responded by offering its frontier six-shooter chambered in .44/40. A cowboy could have both a rifle and his “Peacemaker” and only need one cartridge belt. Buffalo Bill Cody carried an 1873 and a pair of Colts chambered in .44/40 in 1876 when he worked as an Army scout. Chappo, son of Apache Warchief Geronimo packed an 1873, as did most Texas Rangers along with every Old West Cowboy worth his salt. 1876 RIFLE — 28" CASE-HARDENED, STRAIGHT STOCK In 1876 Winchester introduced a new lever-action rifle; they called it the “Centennial Rifle” in commemoration of the ’ 100th anniversary. Winchester’s Model 1876 was discontinued in 1898, after 63,871 guns had been produced. For 2008, 132 years after the first 1876 Rifle was produced by Winchester, Uberti introduces an exact replica of the Winchester “Centennial Rifle.” True to the original, Uberti’s 1876 Rifle is chambered in the hard-hitting calibers: .45-60, .45-75, .50-95 and .40-60— strong enough to take down North America’s largest big-game animals. It also comes with a 28" octagonal barrel, fully-adjustable sights, color case-hardened receiver and walnut straight stock and fore-end. Favored by the likes of Theodore Roosevelt, the 1876 “Centennial Rifle” was the King of its day. Uberti 1876 CARBINE — 22" COLOR CASE HARDENED FRAME (B01) has brought this legend back to life, only better than before. Better, stronger materials and more precise machining, enables Uberti to replicate the original model to more exacting tolerances and specifications, making it stronger and more accurate with today’s modern smokeless and blackpowder ammunition. 1883 MODEL LEVER ACTION RIFLE The 1883 Colt Burgess lever action made from ’83 to ’85 represents Colt’s lone attempt to compete with Winchester for the lever action rifle market. Colt’s initiative resulted in 6403 rifles. Manufacture of the Colt Burgess ceased early in 1885, only 21 months following its introduction. The model gun for the Colt Burgess is exhibited in the Colt Collection of the Connecticut State Library. With such a small production the Burgess is one of the rarer models of Colt weapons and has considerable Collector’s appeal. Collectors have nicknamed the Colt lever action the “Burgess” after its inventor, Andrew Burgess. Burgess was a well known civil war photographer, designer of fire alarms and a prolific designer of firearms. He had nearly 600 firearms patents to his credit. Only three engraved pieces were made and one of these (serial n°285) was presented to William F. ( Buffalo Bill) Cody. On the side of the frame is a motif of Cody shooting a buffalo from horseback, using a Colt Burgess rifle. So, the fact that Buffalo Bill Cody owned one of these guns adds to their color and appeal, as does the overall handsome design and the lever operated action. Original price sheets from Colt and Winchester show the Winchester 1873 carbine was priced at $17,50 whereas the Colt Burgess carbine was priced at $24,oo. According to tradition, Winchester did not take kindly to the intrusion and developed a few revolver designs which would have then been in direct competition with Colt’s mainstay products. Before long, a deal was reached and Winchester agreed to stay out of the revolver business.

Colt’s Burgess featured a loading gate that slid forward rather than the spring loaded pushdown loading gate of the winchester lever actions

1883 BURGESS CARBINE — 20" 1884 Lightning Rifle and Carbine

The Colt Lightning rifle, introduced in 1884, was chambered in .44-40, the most popular pistol round offered for Colt’s 1873 single action revolvers. Colt followed with Lightnings in three different frame sizes to accommodate a wide range of cartridges from .22 caliber up to .50-95 Express. More than 185,000 Lightning Rifles were manufactured, but there hasn’t been a new one made since 1904 — that is until now. The Lightning Rifle by Uberti is an exact replica of the original Colt Lightning, but by using modern steel and manufacturing techniques, the Uberti Lightning will safely stand up to modern ammunition. The Lightning Rifle is available in .45 Colt or .357 Magnum, all with luster finished satin walnut stocks and a choice of blued or color case-hardened receivers. When it comes to speed it can still beat any Winchester —or, as Sam Colt used to put it, “nothing is faster than Lightning.”

1885 SINGLE SHOT RIFLES AND CARBINE The production of the Single Shot started in September 1885 using the Browning patent and terminated towards the end of 1920. It became one of the best known guns and was regarded by many as being the best Single Shot ever to be made. Without doubt it is stronger than the Sharps, better designed, very accurate and reliable in every way. Few guns have been made in so many different calibers - high walls even served in the development of the 7.62 Nato round. The gun was produced during a period in which target shooting was a really popular sport; they were used in International Competitions at 1,000 yards.
