1 ALPHA KAPPA ALPHA SORORITY, INCORPORATED EPSILON XI OMEGA CHAPTER General Meeting Solar Turbines September 19, 2015 Call to Order: The chapter business meeting of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, and Epsilon Xi Omega chapter was convened on September 19, 2015 at 9:40 a.m. Basileus Mary Castleberry presiding. Meditation: Soror Charlaine Carter Recognitions: Soror Michelle Bryant recognized August & September birthdays as well as anniversaries. Sorors Charisse Winston, Adriana Jones, Akyia Westley and Brene Ganther were recognized as first time visitors. Approval of Agenda: Soror LaVerne Brown made a motion to accept the agenda. Second received. Motion carried. Minutes: Soror Clara Baity made a motion to accept minutes with corrections. Second received by Soror Charlaine Carter. Motion carried. Protocol Moment: Officers Reports: Basileus Report: Special Thanks to: o Soror Yvonne Yelder-Logan and Membership Committee for the Epsilon Xi Omega Open House hosted on Sunday, September 13th. o Soror Donna L. Cook and the Retreat Committee for the Chapter Retreat held on the weekend of August 28th. o Soror Staajabu Heshimu and the Evaluation team on their current efforts towards coordinating the 2011-2014 records for EXO that will be evaluated on September 26th. o Soror Mabel for hosting Evaluation Committee meetings at her home. North County Pearls has been recognized by the Directorate as an interest group. Our Regional Director Barbara Denson Trotter has requested that Epsilon Xi Omega provide guidance and support as they become a chapter. Calendar September 26—Undergrad Roundup; Chapter evaluation; NCNW Luncheon o Soror Jacqueline Cox-Anderson will be honored at NCNW Luncheon o Tickets are 55.00 September 22—National Voter Registration Day September 21-25—HBCU Awareness Week o Sorors acknowledged for wearing HBCU paraphernalia at Chapter Meeting September 27—Dr. Charles Drew Health Fair (Omega Psi Phi sponsored); Skyline Park; 9-3 o Contact Soror Ethel to volunteer for event o EXO will align to a Mental Health Screening 2 October 24—National United Nations Day October 28—NAMI Color Ball; 5:30 pm; EXO will receive Trendsetter Award o Soror Mary and Soror Donna will represent EXO o Contact Soror Donna for donations or tickets by September 27th to support a table for 600.00 that will qualify EXO for a mention in the program booklet. October 31—Southern California Cluster; LAX Marriott; Early registration closes 10/11 ($70.00) o Late registration closes 10/18 ($80.00) o Contact Soror Ethel who is coordinating a bus; Bus stops will include Euclid & Mira Mesa & Oceanside Soror Toki Stamps request donations for her participation in the Breast Cancer Walk on October 31st in FL. - http://main.acsevents.org/goto/TokiAKA State of the Sorority Epsilon Xi Omega – Basileus Soror Mary Castleberry Objectives: Four Areas of focus for the Chapter of Epsilon Xi Omega Increase sisterly relations within the chapter o Two Bunco game nights coordinated by Soror Yvonne Yelder-Logan and Soror Charlaine Carter with the Membership Committee o Three Ivy Beyond the Wall Ceremonies in which the chapter grew closer in conducting the ceremonies; The families extended their thanks and gratitude in our outreach; o Week-end Retreat that provided sisterly interaction and bonding. Provide leadership training and development o Standards Committee completed training in January for Chapter Officers. o 11 EXO Sorors attended the Leadership Seminar held in Chicago in July. o Soror Donna L. Cook and Soror Dianne Joiner attended the Basileus certification workshop. Implementing the International targets Success implementing four of five targets; Global Impact Target V pending implementation. Target reports outlined in Committee Reports. Increase EXO’s presence and involvement in the San Diego community o Alzheimer’s Association in June for National Longest Day event o National Alliance of Mental Illness (NAMI) in July for National Minority Mental Health Month at Christian Fellowship Church. o Poetry in the Park (June & July) with Black Story Tellers and the Black Writers’ group organized by Soror Maxine Sherard. o Alpha Phi Alpha Annual Scholarship event in June in which scholarships to deserving students and fundraiser over 1300.00 was added to the Community Budget o Assemblywoman Shirley Weber and the Black Nurses Association of the Health Fair and Backpack Giveaway held on August 22, 2015. Soror Joyce Suber, Ethel Daniels and Christine Antoine had the opportunity to meet with Shirley Weber and included conversation “on how can EXO help?” Soror Salimisha Logan is currently aligned to an administrative position in the office. o EXO held an Debutante Information meeting at Malcolm X Library on Sunday, August 22 o EXO Participated in NPHC Extravaganza Weekend which included the mixer on Friday, picnic on Saturday and basketball on Sunday. o San Diego High School Athletics Department in collecting slightly used shoes as fundraiser and community recycling. o Sprouts Market in Lemon Grove and Lemon Grove City Council in distribution of reusable shopping bags o Earth Lab San Diego on providing outdoor workshops and lab experiences for 6th grade students o San Diego Canyonland’s cleanup and restoration of native plants at Auburn Creek, City Heights. 3 o Groundwork San Diego, Chollas Creek; Rooted in Place, Earthlab on a pocket park scheduled to begin construction October 2015. o San Diego Food Bank on Summer Food Drive focused on providing meals for children during the summer o EXO is making great strides towards being the best chapter in the Far West Next Steps : What Can You Do . Regional Conference (Portland), Cluster Conference (Oct 31st), Founders Day, Boule (Atlanta) and Leadership Executive Committee Recommendation The Executive Committee recommends that revisions be made to our 2015 Operations Budget to free up $1,500 to o pay the $500 required to fund the chapter evaluation; and, o provide up to $1,000 to assist Mu Iota with expenses related to the Undergrad Roundup that they are hosting on September 26 and expenses aligned to Mu Iota’s investigation. o Specific revisions will be covered by Soror Jackie. Second received by Soror Jaine Derrough. Motion carried. Soror Staajabu Heshimu made a motion to accept the Executive Committee recommendation of revising the 2015 Operations Budget to free up 1500.00 that will align to payments of 500.00 to fund chapter evaluation and provide up to 1000.00 to assist Mu Iota with expenses in hosting Undergraduate Roundup and provision to assist with the additional expenses for Mu Iota investigation.
