Achieving a depth of character: Long-form improv practices in US comedy podcast culture Anthony N. Smith Long-form improvised comedy – or long-form improv – has been enduringly significant across media cultures since its development in 20th Century North American theatrical contexts. The comedic mode has been formative to the early development of various successful and influential comedy performers, writers and producers in recent decades, including Mike Myers, Tina Fey, Amy Poehler and Adam McKay (Fotis 2014, 7). It has influenced the scripting and performance processes of many US film comedies, including Anchorman and Knocked Up, and US television sitcoms, such as 30 Rock and Curb Your Enthusiasm.1 It has furthermore recently spread into podcast culture, underpinning various popular podcast series, including Comedy Bang! Bang!, which garners upwards of two million episode downloads per month (Wilstein, 2017).

  • Comedians Paul Scheer and Michael Ian Black Launch New Podcasts with Midroll Media
Comedians Paul Scheer and Michael Ian Black launch new podcasts with Midroll Media April 25, 2018 NEW YORK CITY – Comedians Paul Scheer and Michael Ian Black are launching new podcasts this spring with podcast industry leader Midroll Media. The shows are part of a full roster of spring launches for Midroll and its Earwolf, Stitcher and Stitcher Premium podcast offerings. Earwolf introduces two new shows: • Actor and comedian Paul Scheer (“Veep”) is known for picking apart bad movies in clinical detail on his podcast “How Did This Get Made?” But on “Unspooled,” his new collaboration with film critic Amy Nicholson (“The Canon”), he’s turning his focus to good movies – specifically the American Film Institute’s list of the 100 greatest movies of all time. What made these movies so special in the first place? How do they hold up in 2018? In this show launching May 17, Paul and Amy dissect iconic scenes, talk to artists and filmmakers about the influence of these films and give listeners a free education in classic cinema. • On “Obscure,” coming June 8, actor and comedian Michael Ian Black (“Wet Hot American Summer,” “Another Period”) reads every line of the classic Thomas Hardy novel “Jude the Obscure,” adding his own commentary. Each week he’ll be joined by special guests, including comedian Mike Birbiglia and other famous friends. Both shows will be available on all platforms where listeners access podcasts. Stitcher adds an original program to its fast-growing roster: • Allison Raskin (“Just Between Us,” “I Hate Everyone But You”) makes her podcast debut with the comedic soap opera “Gossip” on June 14.

  • Gender and the Meritocratic Myth of Authenticity in the Cultural Production of Stand-Up Comedy by Stephanie Brown
OPEN MIC? GENDER AND THE MERITOCRATIC MYTH OF AUTHENTICITY IN THE CULTURAL PRODUCTION OF STAND-UP COMEDY BY STEPHANIE BROWN DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Communications and Media in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2018 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Professor Angharad Valdivia, Chair Professor Cameron McCarthy Professor CL Cole Associate Professor Julie Turnock ABSTRACT This dissertation demonstrates the ways in which gender plays a role in the validating of authenticity and merit in the cultural and industrial spaces of stand-up comedy. Merit and authenticity are arbitrary signifiers invoked by comics, fans, critics, and industry gatekeepers to protect the privilege of straight, white men who continue to dominate the field. I argue that the ideology of comedic authenticity is a means through which to police the boundaries of stand-up comedy while masking its underlying sexism, racism, and homophobia. More specifically, I argue that women, operationalized here as an industrial identity category, are constructed as comedy outsiders who must continually prove their worth through a shifting and slippery set of aesthetic and cultural norms and conditions. Further I explore the emotional and material labor women must perform to achieve success within the field, both on the local level and the industrial level. I draw attention to gatekeeping in stand-up comedy by theorizing it not as a type of rhetoric or artistic form,
