(Dis)Believing and Belonging: Investigating the Narratives of Young British Atheists1 REBECCA CATTO Coventry University JANET ECCLES Independent Researcher Abstract The development and public prominence of the ‘New Atheism’ in the West, particularly the UK and USA, since the millennium has occasioned considerable growth in the study of ‘non-religion and secularity’. Such work is uncovering the variety and complexity of associated categories, different public figures, arguments and organi- zations involved. There has been a concomitant increase in research on youth and religion. As yet, however, little is known about young people who self-identify as atheist, though the statistics indicate that in Britain they are the cohort most likely to select ‘No religion’ in surveys. This article addresses this gap with presentation of data gathered with young British people who describe themselves as atheists. Atheism is a multifaceted identity for these young people developed over time and through experience. Disbelief in God and other non-empirical propositions such as in an afterlife and the efficacy of homeopathy and belief in progress through science, equality and freedom are central to their narratives. Hence belief is taken as central to the sociological study of atheism, but understood as formed and performed in relationships in which emotions play a key role. In the late modern context of contemporary Britain, these young people are far from amoral individualists. We employ current theorizing about the sacred to help understand respondents’ belief and value-oriented non-religious identities in context. Having helped launch the careers of industry heavyweights such as Jimmy Carr, Jo Brand and Harry Hill, Up the Creek showcases an eclectic combination of the most established comedy veterans as well as the most exciting comedic voices of tomorrow. From Thursday’s hugely successful interactive open mic ‘The Blackout’ to the raucous crowds and outstanding line-ups every Friday and Saturday through to the more chilled atmosphere (but no less spectacular bills!) featured on our Sunday Specials, Up the Creek proudly showcases the best of the British comedy scene, week in, week out. A fully licensed entertainment venue with a capacity of 275, we also run a small in-house micro brewery featuring our own hugely popular beers on-site. About the Team: Our team consists of a small core group of long-term staff including 1 Booking Director, 1 Assistant Manager and several part-time bar and booking employees, working on a packed programme of weekly shows (see above) as well as one-off corporate events and intermittent television and radio recordings. We are looking for a new General Manager to replace our current manager, who will sadly be retiring after 27 years at the venue. -

Schools Programme
Schools Programme WELCOME A recent study found that children who regularly attended theatre with their school had higher aspirations and better hopes about their future lives. This news sent my heart soaring as this is what this job is all about! The productions presented this year are surprising and eclectic, taking the spectator along visually interesting pathways. The works include a wide variety of theatrical genres from spoken text to puppetry, from dance theatre and musical explorations to acrobatics. Many of the productions are non-text based making them accessible to a broader audience. Central to the Festival are four exciting shows by Scotland based companies as well as a regional focus on Flanders, the Dutch-speaking northern part of Belgium, one of the world’s leaders in producing innovative theatre and dance for young audiences. We have also extended the dates of the Festival to accommodate the increased demand from schools with three international productions opening in the week prior to the main Festival week. In line with our mission, this will allow more children access to high quality theatre. I hope that the 2020 Edinburgh International Children’s Festival is full of special moments for you and your students. Exquisitely theatrical experiences that encourage children and young people to wish, desire and aspire beyond their own lives and immediate neighbourhoods, into their potential future selves. Dubbed “a luminous musical memoir” and a Critic’s Pick by The New York Times, Hundred Days is an exhilarating and heartrending autobiographical piece, written and performed by husband-and-wife team Abigail and Shaun Bengson, about embracing uncertainty, taking a leap, and loving as if you only had a hundred days to live. With their magnetic chemistry and unique musical style, the Bengsons explore the fundamental question of how to make the most of the time you have. “This deeply honest and life-affirming show is a terrific addition to the 2018/2109 season,” said Playhouse Artistic Director and 2017 Tony Award winner Christopher Ashley. “I’m always looking for vibrant and distinct new voices – as well as unique ways of storytelling – and the Bengsons speak to both these aims, culminating in a singular piece of theatre that defies genres. Blackburn certifies that this is the approved version of the following dissertation: The Performance of Intersectionality on the 21st Century Stand-Up Comedy Stage Chair: Dr. Nicole Hodges Persley Date Approved: Aug. 23, 2018 iii Abstract In 2014, Black feminist scholar bell hooks called for humor to be utilized as political weaponry in the current, post-1990s wave of intersectional activism at the National Women’s Studies Association conference in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Her call continues to challenge current stand-up comics to acknowledge intersectionality, particularly the perspectives of women of color, and to encourage comics to actively intervene in unsettling the notion that our U.S. culture is “post-gendered” or “post-racial.” This dissertation examines ways in which comics are heeding bell hooks’s call to action, focusing on the work of stand-up artists who forge a bridge between comedy and political activism by performing intersectional perspectives that expand their work beyond the entertainment value of the stage. Though performers of color and white female performers have always been working to subvert the normalcy of white male-dominated, comic space simply by taking the stage, this dissertation focuses on comics who continue to embody and challenge the current wave of intersectional activism by pushing the socially constructed boundaries of race, gender, sexuality, class, and able-bodiedness. -

Alex Horne – Home Tasking (YouTube, Taskmaster Channel) “Taskmaster is one of the most consistently funny comedy game shows on television” ★★★★ Sarah Hughes, The I Emmy and triple Bafta nominated Taskmaster became interactive as the show’s creator and star Alex Horne set Taskmaster style tasks for people of all ages to do from home during the C- 19 lock down, keeping families entertained and providing a nice diversion from everything that’s happening in the news. Using the hashtag #HomeTasking, fans could submit their task while Greg Davies reprised his role as the almighty Taskmaster to score people’s entries and announce winners on the Taskmaster YouTube channel. Receiving thousands of ingenious entries from households across the globe, #HomeTasking was featured on NPR in the U.S., TVNZ in New Zealand, The Project in Australia, and Channel 4 broadcast each new task throughout the day on air and across their social platforms as part of their Stay At Home activity. After a successful launch reaching 5.1 million views, the finale is released today revealing the champions of the final task.
