  • How to Break Into the French Film Music Market: Leveraging Available Film Rebates and Tax Credits in France to Your Advantage
How to break into the French film music market: leveraging available film rebates and tax credits in France to your advantage Many music composers want to break into the French film market, which is known the world over for its steady production stream of art films, as well as its ‟cultural exception”, aimed at protecting films with a French touch. What is the state of play? What avenues can music composers explore, in order to be retained as part of the below-the-line crew on French film productions? 1. Understanding the dynamics of the French film market: a ‟how-to” guide for film music composers In 2012, Vincent Maraval, one of the founders of top dog French production and distribution companyWild Bunch, published a column in ‟Le Monde” entitled ‟French actors are paid too much!”, which got a lot of attention. In substance, Maraval decried a doomed system, in which the French above- the-line personnel (such as the director, the screenwriter and the producers) and, in particular, French actors, were benefiting from inflated salaries and remunerations, while the receipts made by French theaters on such French film productions had gone down 10 times in the last year or so. To prove his point, he cited the payment scale for French film stars (such as Vincent Cassel, Jean Reno, Marion Cotillard, Gad Elmaleh, Guillaume Canet, Audrey Tautou, Léa Seydoux), ranging from Euros 500,000 to 2 millions on French film productions, while the same actors command salaries of only Euros 50,000 to 200,000 when they work on American film productions.

GAD ELMALEH Touted as the ‘Ben Stiller of France” and the “Jerry Seinfeld of French Comedy” Gad Elmaleh is arguably the biggest and most loved comedic star in France. Born in Casablanca, Morocco, he speaks Moroccan Arabic, French, English, and Hebrew. In 2006, he was awarded the “Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres” by France’s Minister of Culture and was voted “The Funniest Person in France.” Shortly thereafter, he followed up with his fifth one man show “Papa est en Haut” which premiered at the prestigious Just for Laughs Comedy Festival in Montreal as well as to sold out audiences in Miami, Los Angeles and The Beacon Theater in New York City. In December of 2007, Gad made history when he sold out the prestigious L’Olympia (Paris’ Carnegie Hall) in Paris for seven consecutive weeks, a task never before achieved. Immediately after his stint at the Olympia, Gad performed for another seven sold out weeks at Le Palais des Sports – a 3,800 seat venue. He hosted 3 times the “ceremonie des Cesar” (French Oscars) in 2004, 2005 and 2010. In 2008, Gad directed his first film, COCO, which he wrote and starred in. It opened #1 to audiences in France, Belgium and Switzerland. Other feature film credits include the French films “Priceless” opposite Audrey Tautou, “The Valet” and the Holocaust drama “The Roundup” opposite Jean Reno and Melanie Laurent. This satirical portrait shows us the wealthy inhabitants of the Côte d’Azur in a new light. The elegant costumes of the uncredited model sitting on a deck chair on the Promenade des Anglais in Nice gradually strip away as the frames briskly succeed, until she is revealed completely nude. Like an archaeologist unravelling the many bandages of a mummy to lay bare the image of the Pharaoh underneath, Vigo’s camera-gaze X-rays the inner self of Nice’s bourgeois society, exposing what is hidden under the apparent expensive garment in order to reveal the truth beneath the artificial. Vigo is the entomologist who shows the truest essence of the people examined in close- up under his magnifying glass. † Michaël Abecassis, ‘An Interview with Luce Vigo,’ in Film International, 2012.
