Chesterton vi Reconfiguring Nation, Race, and Plantation Culture in Freyre and Faulkner Miguel Edward Santos-Neves , Ph.D. The University of Texas at Austin, 2012 Supervisor: Katherine Arens Gilberto Freyre’s Casa-grande & senzala (1933) (The Masters and the Slaves) and William Faulkner’s Absalom, Absalom! (1936) revisit and reevaluate Romantic notions of history, especially national progress and attendant accounts of racial purity and whiteness of "the people." The plantation home emerges in their texts as the common locus of historical and cultural experiences and as the principle symbol and metaphor for the domination of colonial forces. This dissertation explores how Freyre and Faulkner both take up the contemporary issue of miscegenation as the primary theme in their respective works. They elaborate this theme and explore its ramifications through the central, grounding image of the plantation home, which they approach through a historical sensibility and from a historical perspective. Freyre and Faulkner work from within paradigms from Europe to rewrite them, as they re-think the legacies of colonialism and of the plantation vii organization in non-national, non-ethnic, non-Hegelian, generative, deterministic terms. Their works seek to offer viable and independent counter-discourses to the dominant European cultural models—new, non-nationalist narratives of historical destiny based on culture and economics rather than on any overarching political- historical destiny, as the epics of Europe's nations had been told in the era. This dissertation hopes to contribute to the scholarship that questions the essentialist notions of race and nation, as they were conceived on the plantation in rural regions of the New World. This project recovers a transnational tradition of political opposition—a tradition that roots itself in the anthropology of experience rather than in the determinism of origin and inheritance. It will also argue for disciplinary realignments in the literature of the Americas, by proposing that further efforts be made to study the New World plantation and its effective geography.     The Cultural Landscape Foundation VACHERIE , LOUISIANA Laura Plantation Mute Victims of Katrina: Four Louisiana Landscapes at Risk In 1805, Guillaume Duparc, a French veteran of the American Revolution, took possession of a 12,000-acre site just four miles downriver from Oak Alley Plantation in St. James Parish. With only seventeen West African slaves, he began to clear the land, build a home and grow sugarcane on the site of a Colapissa Indian village. This endeavor, like many others, led to a unique blending of European, African and Native American cultures that gave rise to the distinctive Creole culture that flourished in the region before Louisiana became part of the United States . Today, Laura Plantation offers a rare view of this non-Anglo-Saxon culture. Architectural styles, family traditions and the social/political life of the Creoles have been illuminated through extensive research and documentation. African folktales, personal memoirs and archival records have opened windows to Creole plantation life – a life that was tied directly to the soil with an agrarian-based economy, a taste for fine food and a constant battle to find comfort in a hot, damp environment. Laura Plantation stands today as a living legacy dedicated to the Creole culture. HISTORY Situated 54 miles above New Orleans on the west bank of the Mississippi River, the historic homestead of Laura Plantation spreads over a 14-acre site with a dozen buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The main house along with Creole cottages, slave cabins and farm buildings rest on an elevated landmass of rich alluvial silt created by a geological fault.

    Unit 3: Appomattox Classroom Resources Background: Appomattox During the Civil War, the Confederacy had its own constitution, its own president, and its own capital city in Richmond, Virginia. The Confederate government met there, and President Jefferson Davis lived in a mansion called the White House of the Confederacy. Three years into the war, Ulysses S. Grant led a massive campaign to capture this city, believing it would defeat the South for good. Grant chose not to attack the well-defended capital directly. Instead, he focused on Petersburg, about 20 miles to the south. Most of Richmond’s supplies came through this city. Beginning in the summer of 1864, Union forces lay siege to Petersburg, destroying highways, railroads, and bridges. Confederate forces under General Robert E. Lee defended Petersburg from a line of trenches, but they were badly outnumbered. The Confederate Congress debated whether to arm slaves to fight as soldiers, which would have increased the size of the Army dramatically, but the decision to do so came too late to affect the outcome of the war. In March 1865, General Lee proposed to Jefferson Davis that the Army abandon Petersburg, sacrifice Richmond, and escape to merge with General Joe Johnston’s 20,000 troops in North Carolina. Free of the need to defend the cities, the combined force could continue the war for as long as it took to win. This is just what Grant feared might happen as he continued the siege of Petersburg. On March 30 and 31, 1865, Federal forces tried repeatedly to destroy the last rail link from Petersburg to Richmond.

    PPA Pre-Meeting Excursion: St Louis Cemetery I & Laura Plantation Monday 17th April, 2017 9.30am – 5pm The PPA has organized a pre-meeting day trip to two of the key sites around New Orleans. We will start out at 9.30am and commence with small group guided tours of Saint Louis I Cemetery located in the Vieux Carre area of New Orleans. This will be followed by a tour of Laura Plantation and return to NO. St. Louis Cemetery No. 1 is one of three Roman Catholic cemeteries in NO. Of the three, it is the oldest (opened in 1789) and most famous. It is located just outside the French Quarter of NO. Most of the graves are in a maze of above-ground wall vaults, family tombs and society tombs, constructed in the 18th and 19th centuries. It was initially divided into sections for Catholics, non-Catholics, and “Negroes” (most probably slaves), and its location was chosen to avoid disease spreading to infect the living population. The cemetery contains the burials of many of the most illustrious citizens of New Orleans, including Etienne de Bore (pioneer in sugar development), Daniel Clark (financial supporter of the American Revolution), and Ernest "Dutch" Morial (the first African-American mayor of NO). Notable cemetery structures include the oven wall vaults, the supposed resting place of Voodoo Queen Marie Laveau in the Glapion family crypt, and tombs of French, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish society. The cemetery is on the US National Register of Historic Places.
