Dr. Norman Bethune CI Spring Scholarships & Awards Student Guide 2019-2020 We have put together some general information about scholarships, bursaries and other forms of financial aid to help you cover the cost of your post-secondary studies. It is important to start your research early so you don’t miss any submission deadlines. Use a scholarship database such as www.scholarshipscanada.com or www.studentawards.com to generate a personalized list of scholarships that you qualify for. University Entrance Scholarships Entrance scholarships offered by universities are based on academic achievement. The university establishes grade ranges of marks required to receive an entrance scholarship. You do not need to apply for this type of scholarship. You will be notified if you have received an entrance scholarship at the same time you receive your offer of admission. Check the university website or electronicinfo.ca for each universities entrance scholarship chart. Renewable and Non-Renewable Scholarships A renewable scholarship is awarded for more than one year. Each year, the recipient must meet specified criteria to continue receiving the scholarship. A non-renewable scholarship is awarded for one year only. In some cases, you can re-apply for subsequent years; in other cases, you may not be permitted to re-apply. Bursaries A bursary is a grant offered to students with financial need. Bursaries may have academic requirements, but are generally focused on helping students who do not have the resources to pay for school on their own. Applications for bursaries typically require you to share personal financial information. Community & Company Scholarships Many scholarships are offered through community organizations/groups and the criteria may include volunteer work/community service and leadership experience. You must actively seek out and apply for these awards. In general, recipients are well-rounded students with involvement in a variety of activities at school and in the community. Parents’ Employer Your parents’ employer may offer a scholarship for children of employees. Obviously you will have to meet the eligibility requirements but usually these scholarships go unnoticed and therefore the odds of receiving one are greater. Ask your parents to look into it for you. Ontario Student Assistance Plan (OSAP) OSAP provides loans to students from Ontario who are pursuing postsecondary studies. The amount provided is based on financial need. For more information and to see if you are eligible, visit the OSAP website. Personal Loans If your parents' household income is too high, OSAP may not cover all the costs of university. In this case, you may want to look into personal bank loans or lines of credit. Unlike OSAP, bank loans do charge interest immediately. Most banks provide specialized student loans - contact a few local banks to compare their products. The Scholarship Application Most students will meet the criteria for at least a few scholarships - you just need to know where at filling out so that you can apply for the scholarships that accentuate your skills. to look, and how to complete the application so it will stand out. Even before the scholarship criteria and/or deadlines are released you can begin to prepare so that you are ready to go when you find that scholarship that is perfect for you. Write a one-page statement of your skills, experience and interests. Write a second one-page statement about your life goals. These pages can be re-edited and tailored for individual applications. Apply for as many scholarships as you can! The more you apply for the greater your chances of success AND you may end up winning multiple scholarships. You will greatly increase your chances of scoring scholarships if you apply for the smaller awards. The larger the award the, the greater the competition, so don’t just go for the big money. Some of the smaller awards receive very few applicants Try to apply for different kinds of scholarships. Some scholarships may require your extra-curricular activities or volunteer work. Others may focus on sports, art or your ethno-cultural/religious background. Sources of Scholarship Information University/College websites each have their The Scholarship Bulletin board in the own section dedicated to financial aid and Commons scholarships. www.ouac.on.ca – Ontario Universities’ www.ontariocolleges.ca - Ontario Application Centre College Application Service www.scholarshipscanada.com www.studentawards.com www.canlearn.ca – CanLearn is the source for tools designed to help you save, plan and pay www.campusaccess.com – Click on for post-secondary education. “FINANCIAL AID” section www.electronicinfo.ca - Click on “FINANCE- Fees & Scholarships”. Use the drop down menu to find scholarships available at each Ontario University. Be Precise Target your application specifically to what the scholarship is looking for. Read the application carefully and think about your answers. Look for key words that are repeated throughout the application i.e. “volunteer” or “athletic.” Give them EXACTLY what they ask for…NO MORE, NO LESS. If the scholarship asks for a concise response to a question, e.g. answer in 300 words or less, writing 4 pages to demonstrate all that you know is NOT going to impress the judges. Get the application in on time and don’t make mistakes. Type your responses, where possible. You are competing with other strong applicants and you do not want to give the judges any excuse for passing over your application because it is riddled with spelling errors or messy. Be Neat!
