Extreme Measures about Guy Luthan Hugh Granta British doctor working at a hospital in New York who starts making unwanted enquiries when the body of a man who died in his emergency room disappears. The trail leads Luthan to the door of the eminent surgeon Dr Lawrence Myrick Gene Hackmanbut Luthan soon finds himself in Extreme Measures from people who want the hospital's secret to remain undiscovered. I thought Hugh Grant did an excellent job. True, Dr. Luthan just couldn't give up on finding out what happened to that man, which surely wouldn't be realistic for someone in his high-pressure Extreme Measures as an ER doctor. That was Extreme Measures one patient, after all. But it made for an interesting and suspenseful movie. Grant also gave Dr. Luthan a pleasant manner even under pressure, and a sense of humor, as in the scene where a patient was screaming, and Dr. Luthan said she must have gotten her bill. Gene Hackman was also fabulous. Whether what he did was ethical Extreme Measures be debated, but Dr. Myrick came across very well as someone not quite evil, but not the sort of person one would necessarily want making life-and-death decisions. Simmons was quite good as Dr. Extreme Measures, who was working with Dr. Myrick on his project. I also liked the black homeless man who kept coming to Dr. Luthan for prescriptions he didn't need. A very good effort, with difficult moral Extreme Measures. Looking for something to watch? Choose an adventure below and discover your next favorite movie or TV show. Visit our What to Watch page. The film is under embargo until Wednesday, February 21 at 10:30pm CET / 4:30pm EST / 1:30pm PST. Thank you. *** Short Synopsis A young woman is involuntarily committed to a mental institution where she is confronted by her greatest fear - but is it real or is it a product of her delusion? Long Synopsis Making a startling trip into thriller territory with Unsane, director Steven Soderbergh plunges audiences into the suspense and drama of a resilient woman’s (Claire Foy, The Crown) fight to reclaim her freedom even as she risks her own sanity. Scarred from the trauma of being stalked, quick-witted Sawyer Valentini (portrayed by Ms. Foy) has relocated from Boston to Pennsylvania for a new life. As her mother Angela (Academy Award nominee Amy Irving) misses her back home and her office job is hardly an ideal employment opportunity, Sawyer remains on edge following her two years of being terrorized. To consult with a therapist, she goes for follow-up treatment at the Highland Creek Behavioral Center. Sawyer’s initial therapy session at the suburban complex run by clinician Ashley Brighterhouse (Aimée Mullins, Stranger Things) progresses well — until she unwittingly signs herself in for voluntary 24-hour commitment. Unable to leave the premises, Sawyer finds herself in close quarters with previously committed hellion Violet (Juno Temple, The Dark Knight Rises) and savvy Nate (Jay Pharoah, Saturday Night Live), who is battling an opioid addiction.

  • The Representation of Suicide in the Cinema
The Representation of Suicide in the Cinema John Saddington Submitted for the degree of PhD University of York Department of Sociology September 2010 Abstract This study examines representations of suicide in film. Based upon original research cataloguing 350 films it considers the ways in which suicide is portrayed and considers this in relation to gender conventions and cinematic traditions. The thesis is split into two sections, one which considers wider themes relating to suicide and film and a second which considers a number of exemplary films. Part I discusses the wider literature associated with scholarly approaches to the study of both suicide and gender. This is followed by quantitative analysis of the representation of suicide in films, allowing important trends to be identified, especially in relation to gender, changes over time and the method of suicide. In Part II, themes identified within the literature review and the data are explored further in relation to detailed exemplary film analyses. Six films have been chosen: Le Feu Fol/et (1963), Leaving Las Vegas (1995), The Killers (1946 and 1964), The Hustler (1961) and The Virgin Suicides (1999). These films are considered in three chapters which exemplify different ways that suicide is constructed. Chapters 4 and 5 explore the two categories that I have developed to differentiate the reasons why film characters commit suicide. These are Melancholic Suicide, which focuses on a fundamentally "internal" and often iII understood motivation, for example depression or long term illness; and Occasioned Suicide, where there is an "external" motivation for which the narrative provides apparently intelligible explanations, for instance where a character is seen to be in danger or to be suffering from feelings of guilt.

49 UP A Film by Michael Apted 135 minutes, color & b/w, 2005, UK First Run Features 630 Ninth Avenue, Suite 1213 New York, NY 10036 (212) 243-0600/Fax (212) 989-7649 email: [email protected] www.firstrunfeatures.com SYNOPSIS 49 Up , the latest installment of Granada’s landmark documentary series, revisits the group of people whose lives have been documented since they were seven, to see where they are now as they approach their half century. The original Seven Up was broadcast in 1964 as a one-off World in Action Special featuring children who were selected from different backgrounds and social spheres to talk about their hopes and dreams for the future. As members of the generation who would be running the country by the year 2000, what did they think they would become? Inspired by World in Action founder Tim Hewat’s passionate interest in both the Jesuit saying “Give me the child until he is seven and I will show you the man” and the rigid class system of 1960s Britain, Seven Up set out to discover whether or not the children’s lives were pre-determined by their backgrounds. The result was ground-breaking television – the very first example of a program recording real people living real lives – and the follow-up films have won an array of awards. Director Michael Apted, who has since moved to Hollywood to direct films including Gorky Park , The Coal Miner’s Daughter , The World Is Not Enough and Gorillas in the Mist , has returned every seven years to chart the children’s progress through life.

  • Has Portrayal of Disabled People in the Media
BROADSHEET : MOVING IMAGE PORTRAYAL OF DISABILITY: THEN AND NOW! Has portrayal of disabled people in the media improved in recent years? There are more story lines about disabled characters with more subtlety and less stereotyping in television and film. Television-Carrie Mathieson (bi-polar)in Homeland played by Claire Danes; Tony Soprano (James Gandolfini ) keeps his mental health anxiety issues going through 7 series of the Sopranos; Monk, the detective with OCPD, brings his unique thinking to solve crimes, Doc Martin, played by Martin Clunes, with OCD has proved very popular, as the audience engage with his difficulty in navigating the world. There has been a welcome casting of disabled actors to play disabled characters in soaps, and long running dramas. This builds on the pioneering retaining of Roger Tonge as Sandy Richardson when he developed Hodgkin’s used crutches and a wheelchair in Crossroads ( ATV 1964-1981) and Julie Fernandez (wheelchair user) in Eldorado (BBC 1981-82); Adam Best in the BBC’s Eastenders (David Proud 2009-2010) followed by Donna Yates (Lisa Hammond) of short stature and wheelchair user, 2014 onwards. Kitty Mc Geever (blind) played Lizzie Lakely in Emmerdale (ITV from 2009-2013). In Hollyoaks Kelly Marie Stewart (wheelchair user) played Haley Ramsey. More recently, wheelchair using Cherylee Houston plays Izzy Anstey in Coronation Street. Liz Carr plays Clarrisa Mullery in Silent Witness. American long running series have cast more disabled actors portraying disabled parts, Paula Sage (learning difficulties) plays Roberta Brogan in Afterlife; Peter Drinklage ( restricted growth) plays Tyrone in Game of Thrones; R J Mitte (cerebral palsy) plays Walt Junior in Breaking Bad.

Centre of Biomedical Ethics and Culture SIUT Video Library CBEC has developed a video library consisting of films and teaching videos that highlight ethical issues. We have found them to be an excellent tool in generating an effective discourse on a variety of ethical issues. This list will be of use to bioethics educators who are looking for materials to use as teaching tools. Brief summaries of these films (obtained from quoted internet sites) have also been included in this list. This list will be updated periodically. 1. Not only does Callie find herself strangely drawn to a young girl who happens to be the heart donor’s orphaned daughter, but she also finds unlikely romance with another patient who also recently received a new heart. She soon discovers that the man, named Jasper (Peter Dobson), received the heart from her donor's husband. "A Stranger's Heart." Wikipedia . For Immediate Release P.O.V. Communications: 212-989-7425 Cynthia López, [email protected]; Cathy Fisher, [email protected]; Neyda Martinez, [email protected] P.O.V. online pressroom: www.pbs.org/pov/pressroom Acclaimed Director Michael Apted Brings “49 Up,” Latest Chapter of Unique Documentary Project, to P.O.V. In Special Broadcast on Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2007 at 9:00pm Six Films and 42 Years Later, the “Up” Series’ Children Are Middle-aged Adults With Surprising Views on Love, Marriage, Work, Class – and the “Up” Series Itself “The ‘Up’ series is on my list of the ten greatest films of all time.” – Roger Ebert How do people change over the years? Can the adult already be found in the child of seven? What account would you give that child of the life you have lived since? These are the questions that have been explored, with mounting tension and surprise over four decades, in one of cinema’s most remarkable enterprises, the Up series. Inspired by the Jesuit maxim “Give me the child until he is seven and I will give you the man,” England’s Granada Television began in 1964 what would become a unique record of English life and Western culture at the end of the 20th century. In 1964, Granada’s “World in Action” team, including a young Michael Apted (Coal Miner’s Daughter, Gorky Park, Gorillas in the Mist), interviewed a diverse group of seven-year-olds from across England, asking them to describe their lives and hopes. The original Seven Up was a beguilingly unselfconscious social self-portrait from a time when cinema was still young and television an infant — in fact, Seven Up was television’s first experiment in recording real people living their real lives.
