The programmes which St John Vianney Seminary NPC offer are designed to facilitate all aspects of priestly training; namely, academic / intellectual, human, faith / spiritual, pastoral / ministerial formation; as well as, applied services. It is an integrated, holistic formation within the Southern African context. St John Vianney Seminary NPC caters for three categories of students: Diocesan students for ministry, providing a holistic formation; Religious students who come for academic and pastoral education; and Lay students who come for academic studies only. The Joint Seminary Staff (full-time internal and external staff, as well as, those who serve the Seminary with their expertise on a part-time basis) commit themselves: _ To accompanying seminarians (i.e., those studying for the Priesthood) and private students (i.e. those who are not studying for the priesthood and only wish to obtain the degree registered for) towards healing and maturity. _ To strive to do this by facilitating human, spiritual, intellectual and professional growth for the unselfish service of the people of God and humanity at large. _ At this critical moment of on-going transformation in our young, fragile South African democracy, and in the rich cultural context of Southern Africa to the spreading of the Gospel and the values that perpetuate the dignity of every human person of every creed, race, or gender. This is summed up as follows: 1. The Seminary’s mission is to provide an environment in which a deeply human person may develop: A person of integrity, wholeness and dedication; and _ A person who is equipped with knowledge, values and skills so as to be able to assimilate the personal, communal, intellectual, moral aspects of Seminary formation. II. We believe that philosophy is an essential aspect of this formation processes: 9 _ We wish to produce candidates who value clarity of thought, breadth of vision, intellectual balance, thoughtful dialogue and critical evaluation; We seek to produce people who are able to take intellectual and moral responsibility for the truth they live by – people who are not passive recipients but active contributors. III. In the diverse cultural environment of Southern Africa we seek people who are able to exhibit sensitivity to the authentic values of other cultures by: _ Demonstrating in an increasingly pluralistic society, that we seek to communicate fully the value of the interdisciplinary and integrative role of philosophy in relating diverse investigations to a deeper understanding of human nature, human existence, the universe and God; and _ Producing individuals able

It will be this ba- sic question that will accompany the undertakings of the International Conference St. Josemaria and theological thought, to be held from Thursday 14 to Saturday 16 November at the Pontifical University of Santa Croce (Piazza St. Apollinaris, 49) Organized by the Chair of St. Josemaria active in the Faculty of Theology, gathers for three days experts, professors and students interested – as the Rev. Prof. Javier López of the organizing committee explains – “the renewal of Theology through the means of the life and writings of the saints.” To this regard, “we will focus in particu- lar on the teachings of St. Josemaria, not because it is treated as an isolated case, but because there are very well suited to highlight the value of saints for Theology.” The origin of the setting of this conference goes back to the message of the then Car- dinal Joseph Ratzinger addressing participants at a preceding Theological Sympo- sium on the teachings of St. Josemaria held at Santa Croce in 1993, in which he noted that “Theology, science in the full sense of the word (…) is subordinate to the knowledge that God has of Himself and of which the blessed enjoy.” The future Benedict XVI was not only referring to the knowledge which the saints enjoy in glory, but also to those that themselves have begun to have it on this earth and which are arrived at with their writings, their words and their example.

    N. 362 01 • 2021 Cástor Oswaldo Azuaje Pérez, O.C.D., Bishop of the Diocese of Trujillo, Venezuela, died Friday morning 8 January 2021 in Valera (Trujillo) ishop Azuaje was born in Maracaibo on 19 October 1951 in a family of six brothers. He first learned about Bthe Discalced Carmelite order in 1966 through the nuns at Mérida, in the Venezuelan Andes. Discerning his vocation to the Teresian Carmel, Oswaldo Azuaje entered the novitiate program of the Province of Aragonia-Valenza, Spain at the Desert of las Palmas, in Castile. He professed his first vows as a Discalced Carmelite friar on 12 October 1968. Three years of philosophy studies followed in Zaragoza, and then Ajuaje pursued his theology studies with the Discalced Carmelites, completing first-year theology (1971–1972) at the historic Stella Maris seminary at Haifa, Israel and another three years (1972–1975) at the Teresianum in Rome.
