Annual Report 13-14

July July saw the club continue to develop its school links by attending and delivering sessions at the Bishop Barrington and Greenfield Community School Year 6 open days and as part of School Sports week we delivered sessions all day at Parkside School in Willingdon. As part of the relationship between the club and Bishop Barrington saw the club invited to do table tennis at the end of term reward day at the school and the Bishop Barrington Academy open day. The continued improvement of the players saw several players invited for regional trials at Billingham July also saw Matt do an interview on Radio

August August started with the club doing a bag pack at Tesco store in and having a table in the foyer making £230 for the club along with helping promote the club, Further money and promotion was gained from winning a the monthly Mars Milk Fund along with the money the club also got a Photo shoot with a top photographer. August saw the club asked to be a part of the Urban Games ran by Durham county council sports development team. Urban games saw the Parks in , Crook and used as bases for more sports such as table tennis.

September September started with international Karina Lefevre, making another visit to the club to get some coaching and give some coaching and matches with the members. This extra help really paid off with in the opening tournament of the season Rob Renton won the junior boys plate event at the Northfield 2 star and some great results from everyone. The second tournament of the season in Blackpool this time saw even more success, With Rob again Winning the Junior boys plate event beating Tom Whittaker in the final, but also the cadet boys singles, Leo and Luca Pontone got 2nd and 3rd in the under 11’s and Luca runner up in the 13’s plate. Closer to home the club Ran the Sainsbury’s Level 1 and level 2 School games working with the School Sports Partnership. The under 16’s Girls Team From Bishop Barrington won the Under 16’s Girls and The St Johns Under 14’s Boys won though to the County Finals. Head Coach Matt porter was also asked to be the North East Boys Team Captain at the UK School games in Sheffield The club also hosted a UKCC level 1 course with Zak, Tom Mick Carol and Michael enrolling on the course taking the clubs coaching team up to 10 UKCC coaches. The players who went to the regional trials found out that they had got into the regional squad The club was also nominated for a number of awards at the Sports awards with the club winning, junior sports club of the year and Matt Porter winning coach of the year

October As a result of winning the Durham Dale Sports awards the club qualified for the Sport-Sports awards which yet again the club won County Durham Junior club of the year and County Durham Coach of the year for Matt Porter The club again worked with the partner secondary schools to help Bishop Barrington and Greenfield with year 6 open days The Bishop Auckland Junior team retained the Tri club cup again beating the other more established Durham Clubs. The cadet team also won the 1st Cadet Tri club cup. The Cadet team also made their debut in the National Cadet League and found their feet with victories on the first day of play. These wins saw Luca Pontone and Jack Jacomb appear on Table Tennis England national ranking list The club also started working more closely with the regional coach and Hosted regional observational session with the view of setting up a weekly development session for Durham. Thanks to all these excellent results and awards, saw Matt Interviewed live on Bishop FM.

November The National junior league team started their campaign and sat in 3rd place after first day of play. The tournament players also had some great results at the Cramlington 2 Star with Tom Runner up in the junior boys plate and Luca won the under 11’s November also saw Rob play at the national Cadet and Junior Championship in Preston. Where he was on the live TV court Carol also undertook a fire-walk to raise money for butterwick hospice and the club

December The good results continued in December with the cadet league team picking up more wins at staying in the title hunt. The junior league team played their second set matches and were in 3rd place only one point from 2nd. Weekly Regional development sessions started with players from all the Durham clubs coming together at Bishop once a week for training. The club continued to develop its volunteers and ran a County umpire training day with 7 members qualifying as county umpires As a result of the UKCC level one course Zak and Tom were asked to represent Table Tennis England at the national young coaches academy in Loughborough

January 2014 January was a busy month for the club with Satellite sessions starting at Greenfield school thanks to funding though County Durham Sport (CSP) as well as after school clubs at St Chads and Hardwick schools to add to the other after school clubs being run. As well as the start of the adult beginners classes funded though move into sport. Tom Whittaker qualified for the British Colleges of Sport (BCS) National Table Tennis Finals in Bath by winning the North-East regional tournament at Maiden Castle,

January also saw the club run its first major event with the Bishop Auckland 2 star. A National table tennis tournament which 52 players compete with players coming from Scotland, Leeds and Hull as well as more local places such as , . The club had 16 players who represented them self incredibly well all reaching later stages of various events, an incredible achievement for players who have been playing less than a year. Luca Pontone did really well reaching the u11 final and Carl draper won the Junior boys plate event beating Tom Whittaker in an all Bishop Final. The national junior league team also picked up 2 more wins to keep them in the title hunt

February Further wins on day 3 of the national cadet league saw the young team go unbeaten and remain in the title hunt. The National junior league topped of the season coming in 3rd place a big improvement on last year’s 7th place finish. There were also Good performances at Chandlers 2 and Leeds 2 star Thanks to club sponsors Bribar we were able to run a bat testing night, allowing members and other the chance to test out new bats and rubbers without having the expensive price tag.

March March was a big month for the club with Matt Porter winning Table Tennis England’s coach of the year and Carol Rodway winning volunteer of the year the national table tennis awards. The players also carried on the winning ways. At the Blackpool 1 star with Rob Renton won the Junior Boys singles and Carl Draper winning the Plate event. In the Darlington League the Boys team of Zak Hutchinson, Tom Whittaker and Carl Draper in their first season in the league finished a credible 4th place and won the Weeks cup. Again going unbeaten the Cadet League team of Leo and Luca Pontone, Rob Renton, Jack Jacomb and Conor Elston won the division 2 title. In the level 3 school games again ran by the club supporting the CSP, The Girls u16’s team from Bishop Barrington won the gold and the u13’s boys team from Greenfield picked up a bronze medal.

The second Bishop 2 Star again saw player from all over the country come to Bishop Auckland – Again the club had a strong home entry of 15 players with even more trophies Luca was again runner up in the under 11’s, Aaron Willoughby was runner up in the under 13’s plate, Jack Jacomb was runner up in the Cadet Boys Plate, Harry Atkinson runner up in the Junior plate Emma Smith u18’s girls plate,

At the event the club announced it has adopted Butterwick hospice as our charity of the year, over the next 12 months the club will support the hospice and help raise funds for the great work they do. March saw the start of the “Girls only!” Sessions this was thanks to funding from Councillor Joy Allen, The sessions saw the all-female coaching team of Karina Lefevre and Carol Rodway start session for girls ran by girls. The club also continued its community activities, by taking a table to Tesco’s for the day to allow the community free access to table tennis and to highlight pathways into the club.

April April started with the year’s major charity event the 24 hour ping-pong-athon for PINK PONG-CRUK. The club kept a table going for 24 over Good Friday into Saturday. A big thanks to everyone involved we managed to raise £1000 Further good results saw Luca Pontone and Jack Jacomb qualify for the under 11 -14’s national championships, Tom took a trip to bath to play in the National College finals with Zak Hutchinson, Carl Draper, Rob Renton, Luca Pontone and Erin Harrison all played in the English school Table Tennis National championships in Doncaster.

Coaching development saw the club link up with the secure unit in to provide table tennis coaching as part of the rewards and rehabilitation for the young people. During Easter the club also ran a training camp with Karina Lefevre and Anth Barella as knocking partners and guest coaches with again players from other local clubs attending Easter also saw the club again support the councils sport development team during the Easter park games.

May The final Bishop Auckland 2 star took place in May and the club was happy to receive sponsorship from Trimmers Hair dressers for the trophies which saw one of the company directors come and make the presentations. The players once again performed fantastically and took home honours; Zak Hutchinson won the junior boys plate beating Carl Draper in the final, Erin Harrison won the junior girl plate event beating Emma Smith in the final, Emma was also runner up in the cadet girl’s plate. Cameron Gowland did really well and was runner up in the under 11’s plate. May also saw the start of the fundraising for Butterwick hospice with the club hosting a family fun day

June June saw the club embrace Aerobic table tennis the mix of table tennis movement and music. The club was the first club in the North East to run a instructors course with Matt Porter, Carol Rodway, Andy Jacomb and Pat Johnson are all qualified instructors and now the club runs weekly Aerobic table tennis sessions thanks to Move into Sport funding. The club was also able to form links with Bishop Auckland college, Attending there sports open day. The club will also be running sessions in the college in the new school year. Jack and Luca took part in the Under 11’s-14’s National championships In Doncaster with Luca getting 2 good wins in his group getting through to the last 16.

July Club players continued winning ways with Conor Elston (4) Emma Smith,) Matt Davies (2) Alex Dickons (1) all nominated for Greenfield School sports awards with Conor and Emma Smith taking home an award each. Luca Pontone was also a winner, winning the Darlington sports winners scheme 2014 primary sports achiever award.

The club continued its charity work with Butterwick hospice with the club entering a team into the “it’s a knockout” tournament, which was different to what were used to say the least.

The club was successful with further funding bids with Support from Warburton’s Barkers for the over 50’s sessions and also further funding from County Durham Sport for a satellite club in Woolsingham that will be commencing in September.

July in also the club try and qualify for the Junior British league again with this time both a boys team and a girls team. The boys of Zak, Tom, Carl and Rob were joined By Josh Weatherby and Will Dobinson. The boys lost their first match but was very tight with 2 matches being lost 12-10 in the fifth which could have swung the match our direction. The 2nd match was no contest as the team from Lilington were far too strong, before the boys scored a 5-1 win over Horsham Sussex to finish the day in 3rd place.

The girl’s team of Erin Harrison was joined by Hannah Burrows from Wigan and Alex Robinson from Grantham. They got off to a great start with a 4-2 over Sussex before just going down to Pudsey and then losing to the top seeds Chippenham before finishing off with a 6-0 win over Burton uxbridge.

The club also expended its programme by bringing in Mark Simpson former top 20 England player and School boy international and his company Brain-Spec to do a series of sports psychology workshops to help the mental side of training with the players.

The club also held a Primary school festival for the local primary schools with great feedback and will be running a 2nd one in September
