Kay Hagan and former N.C. Gov. Beverly Purdue while enrolled as an undergraduate student earning a Bachelor of Science in political science. After graduation, he headed to Washington D.C., first to take a job as a special assistant to U.S. Rep. G.K. Butterfield, head of the Congressional Black Caucus, and later serving as the caucus’s director of member services and external affairs. He worked on day-to-day issues for the representative and the caucus, including overseeing special events, projects and digital communications. In July 2017, McCrimmon returned to North Carolina to work for HQ Raleigh, an REGGIE McCRIMMON, ’13 entrepreneurship and innovation community, where he created partnerships and supported inclusion and diversity issues, as well as served as a liaison to NCCU and other historically black colleges and universities. In 2018, he became outreach associate for the Center for Responsible Living in Durham fighting predatory finance practices and served as senior advisor to IMPACT Strategies, a political advocacy firm. In August 2017, he co-founded R. Alexander & Co., a public affairs and management consulting firm. In October 2019, he assumed the role of senior public policy associate with the social media giant Twitter, where he applies his excellent technical and personal skills to manage projects that have an impact on the world. According to fellow Eagle Carmelo Montalvo, ’13, McCrimmon’s trajectory was clear from the pair’s first meeting, describing his demeanor as someone who displays “poise and conviction in everything … His ability to harness the inner talents of the people around him is truly inspiring.” 5 college of arts and sciences Dr. Carlton E. • From Sissy to Sickening: the Indexical Landscape of /S/ in Soma, San Francisco
From sissy to sickening: the indexical landscape of /s/ in SoMa, San Francisco Jeremy Calder University of Colorado, Boulder [email protected] ABSTRACT: This paper explores the relation between the linguistic and the visual in communicating social meaning and performing gender, focusing on fronted /s/ among a community of drag queens in SoMa, San Francisco. I argue that as orders of indexicality (Silverstein 2003) are established, linguistic features like fronted /s/ become linked with visual bodies. These body-language links can impose top-down restrictions on the uptake of gender performances. Non-normatively gendered individuals like the SoMa queens embody cross-modal figures of personhood (see Agha 2003; Agha 2004) like the fierce queen that forge higher indexical orders and widen the range of performative agency. KEY WORDS: Indexicality, performativity, queer linguistics, gender, drag queens 1 Introduction This paper explores the relation between the linguistic and the visual in communicating social meaning. Specifically, I analyze the roles language and the body play in gender performances (see Butler 1990) among a community of drag queens and queer performance artists in the SoMa neighborhood of San Francisco, California, and what these gender performances illuminate about the ideological connections between language, body, and gender performativity more generally. I focus on fronted /s/, i.e. the articulation of /s/ forward in the mouth, which results in a higher acoustic frequency and has been shown to be ideologically

  • An Archaeology of Walls in the Walking Dead
Undead Divides: An Archaeology of Walls in The Walking Dead Howard Williams In 2010, the zombie horror genre gained even greater popularity than the huge following it had previously enjoyed when AMC’s The Walking Dead (TWD) first aired. The chapter surveys the archaeology of this fictional post-apocalyptic material world in the show’s seasons 1–9, focusing on its mural practices and environments which draw upon ancient, biblical, medieval and colonial motifs. The study identifies the moralities and socialities of wall-building, dividing not only survivors aspiring to re-found civilization from the wilderness and manifesting the distinctive identities of each mural community, but also distinguishing the living from the undead. The roles of the dead and the undead in mural iterations are also explored. As such, dimensions of past and present wall-building practices are reflected and inverted in this fictional world. As part of a broader ‘archaeology of The Walking Dead’, the chapter identifies the potentials of exploring the show’s physical barriers within the context of the public archaeology of frontiers and borderlands. Andrea: What’s your secret? The Governor: Really big walls. Andrea: That soldier had walls too and we all know how that turned out, so. The Governor: I guess we do. The real secret is what goes on within these walls. It’s about getting back to who we were, who we really are, not just waiting to be saved. You know people here have homes, medical care, kids go to school. Adults have jobs to do. It’s a sense of purpose.

  • College of Health & Human Services Commencement 2021
COLLEGE OF HEALTH & HUMAN SERVICES COMMENCEMENT 2021 Welcome to CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY LONG BEACH California State University, Long Beach is a member of the 23-campus California State University (CSU) system. The initial college, known then as Los Angeles-Orange County State College, was established on January 29, 1949, and has since grown to become one of the state’s largest universities. The first classes in 1949 were held in a converted apartment building on Anaheim Street and the cost to enroll was just $12.50. The 169 transfer students selected from the 25 courses offered in Teacher Education, Business Education, and Liberal Arts which were taught by 13 faculty members. Enrollment increased in 1953 when freshman and sophomore students were admitted. Expansion, in acreage, degrees, courses and enrollment continued in the 1960s, when the educational mission was modified to provide instruction for undergraduate and graduate students through the addition of master’s degrees. In 1972, the California Legislature changed the name to California State University, Long Beach. Today, more than 37,000 students are enrolled at Cal State Long Beach, and the campus annually receives high rankings in several national surveys. What students find when they come here is an academic excellence achieved through a distinguished faculty, hard-working staff and an effective and visionary administration. The faculty’s primary responsibility is to create, through effective teaching, research and creative activities, a learning environment where students grow and develop to their fullest potential. This year, because of the pandemic, we will celebrate the outstanding graduates of two classes – 2020 and 2021.
