Pai 1Department of English & Languages, Amrita School of Arts & Sciences, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Kochi, India. 2Department of English & Languages, Amrita School of Arts & Sciences, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Kochi, India. Abstract The purpose of this paper is to provide a systematic analysis of the transmutation occurring in the adaptation of a narrative for the motion- pictures. Literary adaptation is actually adapting a literary source into another medium. The fascination behind this sort of activity is that to witness how the magical power of words has been revamped into another media. Adaptation can also be considered as a form of communication that happens between the creativity of a particular author, text and the new form that has been created or adapted. Here, the miniature of an adaptation is exercised on the filmic adaptation of Tracy Chevalier’s novel Girl with a Pearl Earring, with an aim to understand the aspects in which the adaptation differs from the source novel. Key Words:Transmutation, narrative, adaptation shift. 5389 International Journal of Pure and Applied Mathematics Special Issue 1. Introduction The colors, the light, the simplicity of the image, that direct gaze: a lot of Vermeer’s paintings are people not looking at us, in their own world, but she draws us in. In that way she’s very modern. When you think about the Monalisa, she is also looking at us, but she isn’t sitting back in the painting, self-contained.

  • Film Music Magazine Scoring Emperor
The weight of history can be as dramatic as it is romantic, a counterpoint explored in any number of classical films, and symphonically lush scores that have dealt with the West’s awakening to the war-torn East. Now, that majestic sound has been robustly picked up by British composer Alex Heffes for “Emperor,” the new film from director Peter Webber (“Girl with the Pearl Earing”) that contrasts General MacArthur’s postwar search for the guilt, or innocence of the country’s god-ruler Hirohito with a military investigator’s desperate quest to determine if his Japanese fiancé has survived his nation’s bombing of her motherland during WW2. Alex Heffes is a world traveler himself, ethereally capturing the danger of climbing an Andes peak in “Touching the Void,” hearing the African heart of an 84 year-old “First Grader” and even composing original patriotic music for the Arab state of Qatar. But the score that would take him from smaller English pictures like “The Parole Officer” and “Dear Frankie” to the Hollywood likes of “State of Play” and “The Rite” would be “The Last King of Scotland,” a soundtrack for a far more horrific imperious leader that saw Heffes venture to Uganda to record singers in a country formerly oppressed by Idi Amin. “Emperor” is about an ancient Japanese spirit that’s as capable of beauty as it is atrocity. But where one might expect Heffes’ to take a similarly exotic approach to this score as his past journeys, here he’s mostly encapsulated a people’s mysterious mindset into a symphonically lavish voice, a fitting approach for a country that’s under American occupation.

ADVANCED ENGLISH Student Worksheet 1 Module 8 • Living Art Set A: Reading Name: Reviews of the Movie Girl with a Pearl Earring Girl with a Pearl Earring (2003) 100 minutes – Biography / Drama / Romance A young maid working in the house of painter Johannes Vermeer becomes his assistant and the model for one of his most famous works. Director: Peter Webber Writers: Tracy Chevalier (novel), Olivia Hetreed (screenplay) Actors: Scarlett Johansson, Colin Firth and Tom Wilkinson Review 1 Based on the best-selling novel by Tracy Chevalier, Girl with a Pearl Earring (2003) tells the fictionalized story behind Johannes Vermeer’s famous painting of the same name. Griet, a 16-year-old girl, is employed as a housemaid in the Vermeer household. As she cleans Vermeer’s studio, Griet becomes fascinated by the artist’s work. Noting her passion for art, Vermeer begins to take an interest in the young girl. Eventually, he paints her portrait, borrowing his wife’s precious pearl earring for Griet to wear while he paints her. Scarlet Johansson‘s sensitive portrayal of Griet is exceptional. Although she has very little dialogue, she succeeds in creating a completely believable character. Colin Firth is also excellent as the moody and talented Vermeer. The acting is not the only thing worth mentioning. The cinematography is also amazing and the soundtrack is wonderful. However, those who read Chevalier’s book may find the movie disappointing. Important supporting characters from the novel have been removed and the ending has been changed. If you are a fan of the book, as I am, you may leave the movie theater feeling unsatisfied by the frustratingly inconclusive ending.

  • Hannibal Rising Directed by Peter Webber Starring: Gaspard Ulliel Li Gong Rhys Ifans Rated “R”
New installment in Lecter cycle adds nothing new Hannibal Rising Directed by Peter Webber Starring: Gaspard Ulliel Li Gong Rhys Ifans Rated “R” n the recently-released gorefest Hannibal Rising, viewers get a look into the terrifying childhood of future cannibal Hannibal Lecter (Gaspard Ul- liel, in his English-language film debut), made famous as an adult by Anthony Hopkins inSilence of the Lambs, Red Dragon and Hannibal. Like the other three films,Hannibal Rising is adapted from one of the tetralogy of novels by Thomas Harris, but it is the first “prequel” in the series. I The movie begins when young Hannibal and his family flee from their house in Lithuania during world war two. The family goes to a cottage farther off the main roads. Before the family can even settle in, they are disturbed by a Russian tank. The tank merely needs water, but in the meantime, Nazi planes begin to fly overhead, pummeling the ground with as many rounds as they can muster. The only ones spared are Hannibal and his baby sister Mischa. Nazis soon discover Hannibal and his sister. When the men find there is nothing to eat in the cottage, the cannibalistic foreshadowing begins. The men turn on the children in a predictable move. Mischa is the “meatier” of the two, so the men choose to eat her. Eventually Hannibal’s tortur- ers flee when the house is hit with a bomb. An approaching army shortly rescues Hannibal. The movie fast-forwards eight years when Hannibal is in an orphanage for boys. Conveniently, the orphanage is set up in the original Lecter house.
