The varied propaganda, including art, happened during the Japanese era can be viewed positively as it encouraged social and aesthetic awareness at the same time. Martinus Dwi Marianto July 1995 ABSTRACT Surrealist painting flourished in Yogyakarta around the middle of the 1980s to early 1990s. It became popular amongst art students in Yogyakarta, and formed a significant style of painting which generally is characterised by the use of casual juxtapositions of disparate ideas and subjects resulting in absurd, startling, and sometimes disturbing images. In this thesis, Yogyakartan Surrealism is seen as the expression in painting of various social, cultural, and economic developments taking place rapidly and simultaneously in Yogyakarta's urban landscape.

  • Identity, Minority, and the Idea of a Nation: a Closer Look at Frieda (1951) by Dr
Vol. 1 Journal of Korean and Asian Arts SPRING 2020 Identity, Minority, and the Idea of a Nation: a Closer Look at Frieda (1951) by Dr. Huyung Umi Lestari / Universitas Multimedia Nusantara 【Abstract】 The discourse on film nasional (national film) in Indonesia always started by bringing up Darah dan Doa (1950, Blood and Prayer) as the foundation of the Indonesian film industry. The prominent film historian, Misbach Yusa Biran, stated that Darah dan Doa was produced with national consciousness value. The legacy of Darah dan Doa was not only neglecting the role of filmmakers from pre-Independence in Indonesia but also the role of other filmmakers during the 1950s, including Dr. Huyung. Previously, Dr. Huyung (Hinatsu Eitaro /Hŏ Yŏng) came from Korea and became a supporter of Imperial Japan during World War II. After Indonesia gained her independence, Huyung joined Berita Film Indonesia and became a film teacher at the Cine Drama Institute and Kino Drama Atelier. It was there that they then went on to make Frieda (1951), Bunga Rumah Makan (1951, The Flower of the Restaurant), Kenangan Masa (1951, Memories of the Past), and Gadis Olahraga (1951, the Sportswoman). This article discusses 'unity in diversity', a concept in filmmaking that was started by Huyung in 1949. When discussing Darah and Doa as the first film nasional, people forget that the film is driven from the military perspective. Meanwhile, Huyung tried to represent an ethnic minority in Frieda and showing that the ordinary people and the intellectuals also shaped the nation. Based on his experience in the Japanese army and Berita Film Indonesia, Huyung understood that film was very useful in achieving the goals of the state apparatus, due to the cinema's ability to spread nationalism.

A r t a n d E ntertainment in t h e N e w O r d e r ' s Ja il s Hersri Translated and Introduced by Keith Foulcher Introduction "Art and Entertainment in the New Order's Jails" is one of three long essays on the ex perience of political imprisonment in Indonesia's New Order, written between 1991 and 1993 and published by the author from his home in the Netherlands, in the middle of 1993.1 It forms part of a large corpus of writing, including the 276 page manuscript by Pramoedya Ananta Toer, Nyanyian Tunggal Seorang Bisu [The Lone Song of a Mute], which documents the deprivation and suffering of those imprisoned in the wake of the New Order's rise to power in 1965/66. For periods of up to fourteen years, tens of thousands of Indonesians found themselves imprisoned without trial in brutal and inhuman conditions for no other reason than their past membership of organizations having connections to the pre-1965 left, and the political and ideological commitments which association with these organizations was seen to imply. Hersri Setiawan, the writer of this essay, was at the time of his imprisonment a former member of Lekra, the "People's Cultural Institute" that had connections with the PKI, the Indonesian Communist Party. Between 1958 and 1960, he had held a leadership position in the Central Java office of the organization, before taking up a position as Indonesia's repre sentative at the Asia-Africa Writers' Bureau in Colombo, Sri Lanka, which he held between 1961 and August 1965.

The Communist Imagination: A Study of the Cultural Pages of Harian Rakjat in the Early 1950s Stephen Miller A thesis in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy School of Humanities and Social Sciences, UNSW@ADFA, Canberra, Australia August 2015 2 Acknowledgements This dissertation would not have been possible without the enthusiasm, good humour, intelligence and patience of my primary supervisor, Paul Tickell. I cannot thank him enough for his continuing support and faith. He was well supported by my co-supervisors, Emeritus Professor Barbara Hatley and Dr. Edwin Jurriens. I want to especially thank Barbara for her patience in reading drafts in the final throes of thesis production. Dorothy Meyer saw the project through from the beginning of candidature until submission, providing companionship, coding advice, proof reading, and general editing support. Her enthusiasm and passion for my work were central to the thesis reaching the point of submission. The keen grammar sense of my mother, June Miller, helped improve the readability of many sections of the writing. Dr. Kaz Ross also deserves to be mentioned for a late reading of a complete draft and pushing me to submit. It is great to have good colleagues in your corner. I would also like to thank the administrative staff at UNSW at ADFA, especially Bernadette McDermott, who has always been flexible and helpful when dealing with a candidature that lasted far too long. During the prolonged revision process Rifka Sibarani’s support, enthusiasm, and affection was much appreciated, as it continues to be post-thesis. So many other people have also helped me out at various times—students, colleagues, friends, family, comrades.

Basuki Resobowo as a Jack of All Trades: The Intersectionality of Arts and Film in Perfini Films and Resobowo’s Legacy in Indonesian Cinema UMI LESTARI Abstract Basuki Resobowo (1916–99) is known primarily as a painter, activist and head of Lembaga Kebudayaan Rakyat (Lekra, Institute for People’s Culture). He was affil- iated with left-wing politics during Sukarno’s Old Order (1945–65) and first entered the film industry in the 1940s when he played the role of Basuki in Jo An Djan’s film Kedok Ketawa (1940). During the Japanese Occupation (1942–45), Resobowo was part of Keimin Bunka Shidoso (Culture Centre). Literature on Resobowo’s artistic practice has mostly referred to his background in painting. However, in the 1950s, he joined Perusahaan Film Negara Indonesia (Perfini) as an art director and scriptwriter, making seven films, includingDarah dan Doa (Blood and Prayer) in 1950, which is regarded as the firstfilm nasional (national film). This article, while devoting some space to Resobowo’s overall career, chiefly endeavours to revisit the early Perfini films and examine the influence of Reso- bowo’s ideas about art and theatre on cinematographic mise-en-scene.

Historiografi, Vol. 1, No. 1 (2020): 71-80 Dari Realitet Nasi ke Realisme Sosialis: Tema Kerakyatan dalam Seni Rupa Modern Indonesia Masa Persatuan Ahli Gambar Indonesia dan Lembaga Seni Rupa Lembaga Kebudayaan Rakyat Sri Ayu Winda Novitasari,* Mahendra P. Utama Departemen Sejarah, Fakultas Ilmu Budaya, Universitas Diponegoro Jl. Prof. Soedarto, Semarang, Jawa Tengah-Indonesia *[email protected] Abstract This article discusses the populist themes used in Indonesian modern arts, especially during the Persatuan Ahli Gambar Indonesia (Persagi) and Lembaga Seni Rupa (Lesrupa), Lembaga Kebudayaan Rakyat (Lekra). The populist theme arts were considered as part of communist during the New Order. In fact, according to the important periods of Indonesian modern arts, it can be understood that the populist themes became manifestations of nationalism sentiment. By using historical method, this article proof that populist themes in the Indonesian modern arts should be understood as one of the critics of social solidarity, rather than considered as the communist ideology. Keywords: Sosialist Realism; Persagi; Lesrupa; Lekra.
