Christmas Bowl.Pdf www.christmasbowl.org A Brand New Bowl Game! The Christmas Bowl™ is a newly proposed postpost--seasonseason college football bowl game, located in Los Angeles, CA. The Christmas Bowl™ location lends itself to some of the largest college football conference followings, as well as one of the nations largest tourist destinations. The Christmas Bowl™ anticipates NCAA approval by April of 2010, and will play the inaugural game the week of Christmas 2010 in one of the most histohistoricalrical stadiums in the world, The Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. 3 A New Game Based on Tradition! Bringing a new bowl game to the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum has been a vision of Christmas Bowl™ CEO, Derek Dearwater, for almost 10 years. The Christmas Bowl™ name was adopted in recognition of the first postseason bowl game ever played in the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum ---- the 1924 Los Angeles Christmas Festival. While the defunct bowl game was only played in 1924, it’s meaningful to the PACPAC--10,10, as it showcased USC defeating a competitive University of Missouri team 2020--7,7, finishing the season with a record of 99--2.2. The 1924 Trojan’s were coached by Elmer Henderson,Henderson, the winningest coach in USC’s history, with a record of 45 --7 (.865). Also present on the field the day of the LA Christmas Festival, was Brice Taylor, USC’s first AllAll--American.American. Scenes from the 1924 Los Angeles Christmas Festival: USC Head Coach USC AllAll--AmericanAmerican The Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum Elmer "Gloomy Gus" Henderson Brice Taylor in its first year! 4 The Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum Completed in 1923, Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum is located in the University Park neighborhood of Los Angeles at Exposition Park. WitWithh a seating capacity of 93,607, the Coliseum has played host to the USC Trojans (11 time NCAA Champions) since 1923. In addition, The Coliseum has the distinction of being the only stadium in the world to host the Olympic Games twice, in 1932 and 1984. It is also the only Olympic stadium to have hosted the Super Bowl, twice in 1967 and 1973, as well as the World Series in 1959. More recently, it was the selected stadium for the U.S. bid to host the FIFA World Cup 2018/20222018/2022.. 5 Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum December 23, 2009 To: Derek Dearwater, Christmas Bowl From: Jon Lee, Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum Please accept this letter as confirmation that the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum has placed December 21st through 24th, 2010 - 2013 on hold for the Christmas Bowl. We would very much like to see the Christmas Bowl take place at the Coliseum and look forward to working with you on your event. Sincerely, Jonathan Lee Director of Marketing and Events Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum and Sports Arena 6 More Than Just Another Football Game The Christmas Bowl™ committee estimates the new bowl game will generate more than $$1717 million annually for the local economy, much of whichwhich comes from outout--ofof-- town fans spending on local hotels, restaurants, entertainment, retail stores, local services and beyond. Much more than just another football game, the Christmas Bowl™ represents an opportunity to become the second largest economic impact of an annual oneone--dayday event during the holiday period in Los Angeles behind the Rose Bowl. "The Christmas Bowl™ is not only an enjoyable entertainment option for Southern California residents and tourists alike, but it is also a critically important economic boost to the local economy, " said Mayor Antonio VillaraigosaVillaraigosa,, "I’m pleased with the efforts of the Christmas Bowl™ committee to bring a new Holiday tradition for the City of Los Angeles. Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa 7 No Better Place Than LA LA has a large population with a huge college football following LA is home to 176 colleges and universities The Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum is a historic PAC--1010 venue LA is an important tourist destination ---- ranked iinn the top 4 in the USA Universal Studios & Disney Park alone have 20 million visitors per year! Prior to PACPAC--1010 expansion, the Christmas Bowl™ will require a “ba“backck--up”up” conference agreement with the MidMid--AmericanAmerican ConfereConference, nce, or an “at large” team, for those years that the PACPAC--1010 # 7 selection may not qualify as bowl eligible: # 3, 4, or 5 11 Western Athletic Conference Support "The Western Athletic Conference is excited to join the PACPAC--1010 and the MAC in establishing a new bowl alliance with the Christmas Bowl in 2010 through 2013. The Christmas Bowl has the potential to be one of the Western Athletic Conferences leading bowl alliances over the next 4 years, considering the strength of the conferences, the Los Angeles market appeal, and the philanthropic visibility that the Children’s Miracle Network provides. We are pleased to be a part of the Christmas Bowl in its Karl Benson early development and look forward to its emergence towards WAC Commissioner stature and prominence on a national scale.” ––KarlKarl BenBensonson 12 Conference Alignments in Detail A 2 ndnd PACPAC--1010 and WAC alliance is possible due to the 20120100 bowlbowl commitments: Bowl Eligible Bowl Conference Bowl Eligible Bowl Conference Selection Commitment Match Up Selection (non-BCS) Commitment Match Up Approved* Note :: •• The WAC must decide prior to 3/31/10 to support the Humanitarian Bowl, or the New Mexico Bowl, as the NCAA will only allow 4 WAC Approved* bowls given their bowl eligible team average of 4.5 since 2006 *Pending PACPAC--1010 backback--upup agreement approval 13 No Better Place Than LA With 6 major airports, Los Angeles is geographically well positioned to serve the teams, student body and fans of the19 schools in the PACPAC--1010 and WAC: Flight Time Direct Flight Driving WA From (LAX) (Y/N) Time Fresno, CA 0:55 Y 3:32 SF Bay Area 1:15 Y 5:58 Phoenix, AZ 1:15 Y 5:41 68% of OR ID Tucson, AZ 1:23 Y 7:28 all schools are within Reno, NV 1:23 Y 8:00 3 hours of LA* Salt Lake City 1:45 Y 10:15 Boise, ID 1:57 Y 13:51 CA Portland, OR 2:29 Y 15:09 Seattle, WA 2:39 Y 17:57 NV Eugene.
