As we approach the year 2000 - speaking from the eyes of a black historian - I can see undeniable progress in Black Buffalo. That progress has come quickly, at least in the historical sense. In 1940 there were still only 18,000 African- Americans in Buffalo, just 3 percent of the population. Fifty years later, that number has exploded to more than 100,000 - 31 percent of the population. The clear and considerable progress since mid-century is the springboard on which today's achievements are built. In 1996, blacks are finding jobs and opportunities that their forbearers in 1900 would have never dreamed possible. Over the years, a small but highly talented and influential black middle class has emerged. This nascent group is composed of religious leaders, elected officials, university professors and administrators, entrepreneurs, doctors, lawyers, school administrators, principals and teachers, nurses, firefighters, police and skilled factory workers. Yet when I travel through Buffalo's East Side and its Lower West Side, I am reminded of the words of the Rev. Joseph Lowery, president of the southern Christian Leadership Conference, on the 25th anniversary of the March on Washington -- "It seems that everything has changed, and nothing has changed." For Black Buffalo, it appears, the old proverb applies: The harder we run, the farther we fall behind. -

Introduction In May 1992, Teachers Management Investment Corporation requested that the Nevada County Historical Landmarks Commission attempt to identify and research the historically significant points of interest located on the Lorna Rica Ranch. NCHLC conducted searches of county records, newspapers, Nevada County Historical Society Bulletins from 1948 to the present, reviewed pertinent literature and histories, searched the Empire Mine files and conducted interviews of citizens in attempts to determine the historical points of interest on Lorna Rica Ranch. Additionally, field surveys were conducted by members of the NCHLC to better understand the various facets of the potential sites located on Lorna Rica Ranch. This enables the NCHLC to develop a clearer understanding of what could be considered historically significant to the citizens of Nevada County. The research uncovered five historically significant tangible sites. The sections under investigation are: (1) two prehistoric Southern Maidu sites; (2) remnants of the Nevada County Narrow Gauge Railroad beds; (3) remains of the Idaho Maryland mine operations; (4) the Lorna Rica Ranch Thoroughbred operations; and (5) the MacBoyle reservoir which includes the purported World's Fair Fountain. The individual, Errol MacBoyle is an historically significant individual that by all rights should be included in the historically significant list of the Lorna Rica Ranch. -

2003 Editorial Daily NJPA Better Newspaper Contest Results Overall Awards Journalist of the Year, Daily “Profiting From Public Service” Paul D'Ambrosio Asbury Park Press, Neptune Judges comments: A clear winner. A powerful expose. It is evident that a ton of tedious work went into this massive project. A provocative, infuriating look at greed and self-aggrandizement in NJ’s political underworld. Would have seen boxes splattered throughout the pages separately addressing how each different “sin” gave the politician and his family/business quality of life advantages the voter who put him in office doesn’t have, but is paying for, etc. i.e. several jobs adding up to bigger pensions and a cushy upcoming retirement. I’d title the boxes, “How does this make you feel?” Would like to have seen a chart of how all politicians cited in the series for their misdeeds made out in the election: did they win or lose? By how many votes? One was cited (Bennett’s race). Great job! Repository: Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center, University of Texas at Austin Cousins, Margaret, 1905- Biographical Sketch Born in Munday, Knox County, Texas, on January 26, 1905, Margaret Cousins was the first child of Walter Henry and Sue Margaret Reeves Cousins. Largely through the influence of her father, Margaret displayed an interest in pursuing a literary career at a young age. Upon graduating from Bryan Street High School in Dallas, Texas, in 1922, Cousins entered the University of Texas at Austin with a major in English literature. When Cousins left the university in 1926, she found employment as an apprentice on her father's Southern Pharmaceutical Journal in Dallas, advancing to associate editor in 1930 and editor in 1935. Cousins moved to New York City in 1937 to work as assistant editor of the Pictorial Review. When the Pictorial Review ceased publication in 1939, she began work as a copy writer in the promotional department of Hearst Magazines, Inc. Over the next few years she read manuscripts on a free-lance basis and wrote fashion captions for Heart's Good Housekeeping, to which she had been a contributor as early as 1930, when her poem “Indian Summer” appeared in the November issue. -
