History of Tour de France from the geographical point of view Vladimír Bačík, Michal Klobučník Abstract The Tour de France, a three weeks bicycle race has a unique position in the sports world. In 2013, even the 100th year of this prestige event will be held. Over almost 110-year history, people could notice unique stories and duels in particular periods, which the sports world will never forget, and celebrities that became legends, and many others. Also many places where the races took place entered the history of Tour de France. Our attempt in this article was to point out the spatial context of this event using advanced technologies for the purpose of distribution of historical facts on the Internet. The introductory part characterizes briefly the attendance of particular stage centres from a regional point of view. This part was a sort of entry into the main topic dealing with selected historical aspects of difficult ascents which decide every year on the winner of Tour de France, and also attract fans from all over the world to races taking place on French roads. At the final stage of research, the distribution of results on the website available to a wide circle of fans of this sports event played a very significant part (www.tdfrance.eu). Using advanced methods and procedures we have tried to capture the historical and spatial dimensions of Tour de France in a general form and thus offer not only to the expert community a new view of this unique sports event. Introduction Worldwide in different corners of our planet, as well as in different sports branches global events are organised.

  • THE FRENCH CONNECTION Houghton CC and Le Tour …………..The Missing Links………………And More(Useless Information)
THE FRENCH CONNECTION Houghton CC and Le Tour …………..the missing links………………and more(useless information). In this historic year of the 2014 TdF Grand Depart taking place right here in the North of England, The Tootler has collected together a few interesting facts associating our great club with the worlds greatest bike race and some of the heroic riders who make the connection; roughly, possibly.Admittedly they are loose connections but there are worse things than being loosely connected so taking the advice of Ernest Hemingway to “write drunk, edit sober”, in this late night conceived and rambling compilation Tootler will attempt to connect Houghton CC, the late great Chis, the Vaux Grand Prix road race and the Tour de France. Firstly some relevant background information. For the benefit of recent members (and those under sixty five) the great Chis was a Houghton grammar school boy called Peter Chisman who joined the club in 1954 and who, apart from a wonderful career as an amateur and a professional also inspired hundreds of kids to take up bike racing. In the north east, at least in bike racing terms, the ninteen sixties and seventies were the belle epoque, the beautiful era, a golden time. Friday night at the clubrooms would be packed. There was a separate time trial and road racing notice board. The time trialling notices, race details and start times would be displayed on the RTTC notice board; and the BCF notice board would detail all road races, entrants, times, meeting points etc for those members racing on the road that weekend.

  • Spain's National Cycling Tour and the Politics of Regional and National Identity, 1975
Spain’s National Cycling Tour and the Politics of Regional and National Identity, 1975- 2000 Alexander Tuck January 2015 Abstract This thesis examines the banal nationalism of La Vuelta Ciclista a España (Spain’s national cycling tour) in the post-Franco period. In light of recent work completed on post- Franco Spanish nationalism, this project provides a robust empirical analysis of four newspaper’s coverage of the race between 1975 and 2000. The object of this thesis is to provide empirical ballast to a number of hypotheses and suggestions that have been made, primarily as to the role of informal symbols such as sport in the immediate post- Franco period where formal national symbols suffered a delegitimisation. There are two major themes in this work: firstly, a theme that comprises Spanish national identity and nationalism in the post-Franco period, and secondly, a theoretical theme that looks to interrogate and develop Michael Billig’s theory of Banal Nationalism (Billig 1996). Utilising Billig’s original publication, as well as other work on Le Tour de France, this thesis constructs a mixed quantitative/qualitative content analysis of newspapers in this period, seeking to expand our knowledge of informal national symbols beyond areas, such as football, where analyses have already been done. Newspapers from the main territorial cleavage in the country, Spain and Catalonia, are represented in an examination of the growth of La Vuelta as a national symbol as well as how this has been mediated across political and territorial lines. 2 Table of Contents Abstract ...................................................................................................................................... 2 1 - Introduction ........................................................................................................................... 4 2 - Literature Review ................................................................................................................
