Entry Copyright © 2008 glbtq, Inc. Reprinted from http://www.glbtq.com With the death of Shura Cherkassky in 1995, the music world lost its last link with the Great Romantic Piano Era. At the age of eighty-six, after more than seventy-five years of performing, the longest career in the history of classical pianism, Shura Cherkassky still sounded like a young man. Cherkassky was born in Odessa, Ukraine on October 7, 1909 (but frequently given as 1911), the son of a Jewish family. Cherkassky's father was a dentist, and his mother a professional pianist, with whom he began piano studies at the age of four. Cherkassky's debut in his native city in 1920 was sensational. In December 1922, the family moved to the United States, settling first in Baltimore, Maryland. At this time the family gave Cherkassky's birth date as 1911, believing that a prodigy of 12 would be regarded as more remarkable than an adolescent of 14. After consulting famous pianists of the day (Vladimir de Pachman, Sergei Rachmaninoff, Ignace Jan Paderewski, and Josef Hofmann), Cherkassky's parents enrolled him in the newly opened Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia in the fall of 1925. He began formal studies with Hofmann, with whom he would study until 1935, becoming his most successful student. He also studied briefly with David Saperton, another member of the Curtis faculty. Cherkassky's American debut took place in March of 1923 in Baltimore. -

« Leopold Godowsky’s Fifty-Three Studies on Chopin’s Études » by « Younggun Kim » A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of « Doctor of Musical Arts » « Graduate Department of Music » University of Toronto © Copyright by « Younggun Kim » « 2017 » Leopold Godowsky’s Fifty-Three Studies on Chopin’s Études Younggun Kim Doctor of Musical Arts Graduate Department of Music University of Toronto 2017 Abstract Leopold Godowsky (1870-1937) composed works that require pianistic fluency of an exceptional order, including fifty-three Studies based on twenty-six of Frédéric Chopin’s twenty-seven Études. The purpose of this dissertation is to examine the significance of these Studies and to reveal the compositional techniques that Godowsky used to create them. This dissertation consists of a foreword and seven chapters. The foreword describes the unique position that Godowsky’s Studies occupy in the piano literature and argues that they deserve further scholarly research. Chapter one discusses Godowsky’s life and the composition of the Studies, and it provides a review of relevant literature. Chapter two is divided into ii two sections. The first section proposes five compositional techniques that are used to create the Studies: switch, condensation, superimposition/addition, reconstruction and merging. The second section examines Godowsky’s classification of the Studies into five categories: Strict Transcriptions, Free Transcriptions, Cantus Firmus Versions, Versions in Form of Variations and Metamorphoses. Chapters three, four and five are case studies of selected Studies, arranged by the compositional techniques presented in Chapter two. Chapter three deals with Studies that are composed using switch, superimposition/addition and merging technique. -

Doctor of Musical Arts (Performance), May 2013, 112 pp., 32 musical examples, bibliography, 56 titles. In the art of song composition, American composer Samuel Barber was the perfect storm. Barber spent years studying under superb instruction and became adept as a pianist, singer, composer, and in literature and languages. The songs that Barber composed during those years of instruction, many of which have been posthumously published, are waypoints on his journey to compositional maturity. These early songs display his natural inclinations, his self-determination, his growth through trial and error, and the slow flowering of a musical vision, meticulously cultivated by the educational opportunities provided to him by his family and his many devoted mentors. Using existing well-known and recently uncovered biographical data, as well as both published and unpublished song juvenilia and mature songs, this dissertation examines the importance of Barber’s earliest musical and academic training in relationship to his development as a song composer.
