My mind, heart, and soul still resonate with the musical memories generated by the recent ALS festival at Northwestern University. The train of descendants he bequeathed to the next century remains [email protected] alive in the many dedicated artist/teachers across the continent and even the globe - a number of whom are ALS members - who are tireless in their commitment to students. The ALS honors this ALS JOURNAL Jonathan Kregor, Editor teaching commitment through its support of the Los Angeles International Liszt Competition Mary Emery Hall Room 4240 and the recently completed Franz Liszt Festival & International Piano Competition this fall at The Cincinnati College-Conservatory Ohio State University. Both of these competitions have, over the years, identified budding young PO Box 210003 artists who show an affinity for the music of Liszt. Also, local ALS chapter events [email protected] often focus upon students through recitals and masterclasses where they gain valuable insight ALS NEWSLETTER/WEBSITE and experience in their studies. Are there ways in which the Paul Barnes ALS could encourage further excellence in teaching, scholarship, and mentoring, whether for Luiz de Moura Castro students or teachers? What other kinds of support could our local chapters offer students? Can Alexander Djordjevic* Gabriel Dobner we use the ALS network to connect our students with their peers and with us? Our members Alexandre Dossin* are our most significant resource for mining and implementing ideas that might emerge from Gila Goldstein such consideration. When I think Ksenia Nosikova Edward Rath* about the future of the ALS, I always reflect back upon the legacy, example, and model that Steven Spooner our beloved Lisztians of blessed memory left behind for us to carry forward. Just as Thomas Helen Smith Tarchalski Mastroianni and Fernando Laires had a lasting impact on all of us over the years, that impact Alan Walker inspires us to move forward. It is certain that their commitment to students was always above William Wellborn Richard Zimdars and beyond the call of duty, and so they challenge us to think about students. Our task is to think creatively about fresh ways to animate the spirit of their commitment to students in our teaching, *Member, Executive Committee scholarship, and performance, as well as our work as members of The American Liszt Society. Alisa Yuko Bernhard 10 November 2016 i Abstract The concept of the musical work has triggered much discussion: it has been defined and redefined, and at times attacked and deconstructed, by writers including Wolterstorff, Goodman, Levinson, Davies, Nattiez, Goehr, Abbate and Parmer, to name but a few. More often than not, it is treated either as an abstract sound-structure or, in contrast, as a culturally constructed concept, even a chimera. But what is a musical work to the performer, actively engaged in a “relationship” with the work he or she is interpreting? This question, not asked often enough in scholarship, can be used to yield fascinating insights into the ontological status of the work. My thesis therefore explores the relationship between the musical work and the performance, with a specific focus on classical pianists of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. I make use of two methodological starting-points for considering the nature of the work. Firstly, I survey what pianists have said and written in interviews and biographies regarding their role as interpreters of works. Secondly, I analyse pianists’ use of tempo fluctuation at structurally significant moments in a selection of pieces by Johann Sebastian Bach and Frederic Chopin.

As a girl she studied with Alfred Cortot and Wilhelm Kempff. She holds an Artist Diploma from the Ecole Normale de Musique, Paris, and the Frederic Chopin Academy in Warsaw. She also holds Bachelor of Music and Master of Science degrees from the Juilliard School, where she studied with Rosina Lhevinne and Martin Canin. When she earned her Ph.D. degree from New York University, her dissertation was on the music of Olivier Messiaen. Her book, Olivier Messiaen: the Musical Mediator was published in 1996. In 2011, she wrote her memoirs Simply Madeleine: The Memoir of a Post-World War II French Pianist. Madeleine Forte is a founding member of The Bel-Etre Ensemble and the Lillibridge Ensemble. She is a Fellow of Silliman College at Yale University, and was a Visiting Hendon Fellow in 1996. She toured all over the world with her late husband, Allen Forte, Battell Professor emeritus of the Theory of Music at Yale University. Raphael and Karen Ryger, violinist and cellist, husband and wife, have been playing together since their Juilliard School days as teenagers.

    THE KOSCIUSZKO FOUNDATION CHOPIN PIANO COMPETITION HISTORICAL OVERVIEW In 1949, to mark the centennial of the death of Fryderyk Chopin, the Kosciuszko Foundation’s Board of Trustees authorized a National Committee to encourage observance of the anniversary through concerts and programs throughout the United States. Howard Hansen, then Director of the Eastman School of Music, headed this Committee, which included, among others, Claudio Arrau, Vladimir Horowitz, Serge Koussevitzky, Claire Booth Luce, Eugene Ormandy, Artur Rodzinski, George Szell, and Bruno Walter. The Chopin Centennial was inaugurated by Witold Malcuzynski at Carnegie Hall on February 14, 1949. A repeat performance was presented by Malcuzynski eight days later, on Chopin’s birthday, in the Kosciuszko Foundation Gallery. Abram Chasins, composer, pianist, and music director of the New York Times radio stations WQXR and WQWQ, presided at the evening and opened it with the following remarks: In seeking to do justice to the memory of a musical genius, nothing is so eloquent as a presentation of the works through which he enriched our musical heritage. … In his greatest work, Chopin stands alone … Throughout the chaos, the dissonance of the world, Chopin’s music has been for many of us a sanctuary … It is entirely fitting that this event should take place at the Kosciuszko Foundation House. This Foundation is the only institution which we have in America which promotes cultural relations between Poland and America on a non-political basis.
