An Archaeological Desk-based Assessment Preston, S Reading : Thames Valley Archaeological Services, 2005, 25pp, figs, tabs, refs Work undertaken by: Thames Valley Archaeological Services A desk-based assessment was undertaken on a proposed development area. The site occupied a position next to the parish church in an area whose layout appeared to have been dominated by medieval burgage plots. There was a strong possibility that medieval occupation remains may have been present on site. Although much of the site had been built over, some areas of archaeological potential may have still remained undamaged. A further field evaluation was recommended. [Au(adp)]

Archaeological Assessment Lyon, J London : Museum of London Archaeology Service, 2005, 33pp, colour pls, figs, tabs, refs Work undertaken by: Museum of London Archaeology Service A desk-based assessment has found the principal potential for the site was for the Roman period. The crest of Brockley Hill had long been thought of as the location of Sulloniacae, a Roman settlement, mentioned in a contemporary document (Antonine Itinerary) as being 12 miles from London and nine miles from St. Albans. No evidence of this settlement had yet been discovered. The site lay immediately to the north of a Scheduled Ancient Monument, the Roman pottery kilns and settlement alongside . [Au(abr)]

The site lay within an area of archaeological potential on the Borough's constraint maps. This potential was derived from its proximity to Deptford Creek, which was a topographic location favoured for early occupation. The development proposals included basement car parking which may have impacted on the archaeologically relevant levels. A field evaluation was recommended to provide detailed information on the archaeological potential of the site so that a scheme to mitigate the impact of development on any below ground archaeological deposits could be drawn up if it was appropriate. An Archaeological Desk Based Assessment Ford, S Reading : Thames Valley Archaeological Services, 2005, 13pp, figs, refs Work undertaken by: Thames Valley Archaeological Services A desk-based study was carried out as an assessment of land ahead of a proposed redevelopment. The principle impact of the proposed works involved the removal of previous foundations and the creation of new strip foundations. The extent of these impacts on potentially surviving archaeology was small. An exception would be where an archaeological features had cut through the underlying gravel. [Au(abr)]

An Archaeological Desk-based Assessment Preston, S Reading : Thames Valley Archaeological Services, 2005, 26pp, figs, tabs, refs Work undertaken by: Thames Valley Archaeological Services The site occupied a position within an Archaeological Priority Area and furthermore covered an area exceeding the threshold of 0.4 ha which the Borough considered should require archaeological field evaluation prior to development. Archaeological finds from the immediate vicinity of the site suggested that there was a moderate to high potential for locally important remains to have existed on this site, primarily from the prehistoric and Roman periods. The potential for remains of other periods, or for nationally significant remains, was low. The eastern portion of the site had been intensively built over and any remains which may have existed there may have been destroyed. The western portion, however, had never been developed, apart from the presence of sewers, and preservation of any remains found there was expected to have been good. A further field evaluation was recommended to further explore the site. [Au(adp)]

The excavation consisted of a single trench, revealing evidence for possible Bronze Age, Late Iron Age and 19th century activity. Two parallel gullies running north-south were recorded dating from the Late Iron Age. Both were backfilled, although the western one remained a boundary as it was recut by a causewayed ditch, possibly representing part of an enclosure with an entrance. The termini of these ditches contained a considerable quantity of Late Iron Age pottery as well as some slag and hearth lining. No evidence was uncovered to suggest the present of medieval or post-medieval structures earlier than the 19th century. [Au(abr)]

Site A was an area of wasteland, while site B was used as a garage sales and repair facility. There was plenty of evidence for human occupation and activity in the area of the two sites, though this was mostly confined to the Roman, medieval and later periods. Taking the evidence as a whole the potential for prehistoric and Saxon occupation and activity was considered low for both sites. For the Roman period the potential was considered low for site A and medium for Site B. For the medieval to post-medieval periods the potential was considered low for site A but medium to high for site B. [Au(abr)]
