We investigated the Chagyrskaya Cave – a key-site of the Sibirya- chikha Middle Paleolithic variant. The cave is known for a large number of Neanderthal remains associated with the Sibirya- chikha techno-complex, which includes assemblages of both lithic artifacts and bone tools. According to our results, a Neanderthal population has used the cave over a few millennia. They hunted juvenile, semi-adult and female bisons in the direct vicinity of the site. -

Pinto Llona1, Aurora Grandal D’Anglade2 & Sara Robinson-ROXBURGH3 Abstract: The cave named Tito Bustillo (Ribadesella, Asturias, Spain) has been known for decades because of its Magdalenian rock-art. It is a large karstic system by the Atlantic shore of northern Spain; the entrance is almost at sea level and its lower levels are submitted to tidal action. Currently a show cave, an assemblage of bear Ursus spelaeus bones was discovered when improving on the walkways in the 80’s, and subsequently excavations were carried out. This is the only cave bear site documented so far in the Asturias region of northern Spain. Here we describe the site and the bear population excavated, and briefly compare it with other cave bear sites in the neighbouring regions. L’intégration des nouvelles figures dans le dispositif iconographique de la cavité offre une vision très différente du modèle décoratif, qui montre un rapport étroit avec d’autres grottes ornées de la Corniche Cantabrique. La integración de las nuevas figuras en el dispositivo iconográfico de la cavidad ofrece una visión muy distinta del modelo decorativo, guardando fuertes relaciones con otras cuevas decoradas de la Cornisa Cantábrica. -

Martin, Chair California Hard Core is a narrative history of the pornographic film industry in California from 1967 to 1978, a moment when Americans openly made, displayed, and watched sexually explicit films. Two interrelated questions animate this project: Who moved the pornographic film from the margins of society to the mainstream of American film culture? What do their stories tell us about sex and sexuality in the U.S. in the last third of the twentieth century? The earlier academic literature concentrates on pornographic film and political debates surrounding it rather than industry participants and their contexts. The popular literature, meanwhile, is composed almost entirely of book-length oral histories and autobiographies of filmmakers and models. California Hard Core helps to close the divide between these two literatures by documenting not only an eye-level view of work from behind the camera, on the set, and in the movie theater, but also the ways in which consumers received pornographic films, placing the reader in the viewing position of audience members, police officers, lawyers, judges, and anti-pornography activists. -

Campo Alegre Dr., Tempe, AZ 85281-1105; [email protected] abstract This account describes ten years of data collecting, travel, personal experiences, analyses, and report writing (a list follows the text) on the subject of “perimortem” (at or around the time of death) bone damage in Ice Age Siberia. In the telling, emphasis is given to Nicolai D. Ovodov’s role in this long- term project, and his earlier contributions to Siberian cave and open-site archaeology. This is more a personal story than a scientific report. CHAPTER 5 MIDDLE PALAEOLITHIC PATTERNS OF SETTLEMENT AND SUBSISTENCE IN THE SOUTHERN CAUCASUS DANIEL S. ADLER, NICHOLOZ TUSHABRAMISHVILI O Abstract. Occupying an intermediate position between Africa, Asia, and Europe the southern Caucasus has represented a northern geographic terminus for major expansions and migrations of human populations, both Archaic and Modern, throughout much of prehistory. During the Middle Palaeolithic, the high elevations and glaciated passes of the Caucasus served as a natural barrier to mobility in a northerly direction. Therefore the southern Caucasus provides an opportunity to examine Neanderthal behavioral patterns within an environmental and geographical cul de sac. Unfortunately, our current understanding of Middle Palaeolithic settlement and subsistence patterns within this region suffers from a dearth of well-excavated, dated, and documented sites. Previous excavations at the rockshelter Ortvale Klde, Djruchula Cave, and Bronze Cave, located in the western Georgian Republic, hint at a variable system of settlement and subsistence linked closely to prevailing environmental and topographical conditions. Although mountainous, warm, humid, and well forested, the numerous deep river valleys that drain the Caucasus form a patchwork of ecological niches populated by a wide array of floral and faunal species. The discontinuous nature of environmental communities and the natural impediments to mobility presented by deep valleys, fast rivers, and high elevations, likely influenced the settlement and subsistence behaviors of Neanderthals more than the cultural factors often cited. Likewise, we argue that climate change fed a cycle of regional abandonment and resettlement, which in turn fostered the technological diversity witnessed in the archaeological record. Traditional views of settlement and subsistence within the southern Caucasus are presented and evaluated in light of data retrieved during the recent re- excavation and dating of Ortvale Klde.
