  • 2020 - 2021 About New Amsterdam Jazz
Stichting New Amsterdam Jazz 2020 - 2021 About New Amsterdam Jazz Stichting New Amsterdam Jazz (NAJ) was founded in 2020 with the mission to raise local ánd international recognition for the jazz scene that is based in the Netherlands and connect it to jazz scenes across the globe. New Amsterdam Jazz 1) produces, 2) develops, and 3) advises. Activities include, but are not limited to, organizing concert series, supporting the creation of albums, co-creating musical projects and platforms, facilitating educational programs, advising other organizations and foundations about the jazz landscape in the Netherlands, and establishing (inter)national partnerships. New Amsterdam Jazz believes that an effective way to help musicians get to the next stage in their careers is by playing on bigger stages with more renowned musicians, which is why mentorship and intergenerational pollination are two core values of the organization. New Amsterdam Jazz has a creative advisory board that advises the directors on programming and artistic quality. In each of the projects NAJ supports, NAJ looks at whether the project is diverse & inclusive and whether our support can have a domino effect to catalyze more opportunities in the career development of the musician(s). • PRESS RELEASE Jazz the Week up with Latin American Music From
PRESS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Date: 14 June 2019 Jazz the Week Up with Latin American Music from Michel Camilo and Ernest Martinez Izquierdo Swire Denim Series: Jazz with Michel Camilo (14 & 15 June) [14 June 2019, Hong Kong] The Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra (HK Phil) is excited to have Dominican jazz pianist and composer Michel Camilo and his Grammy-award winning partner, conductor Ernest Martinez Izquierdo, bringing a jazzy evening to the Hong Kong audience. In this Latin jazz concert, Michel Camilo’s Piano Concerto no.1 will be presented in Hong Kong for the first time together with Gershwin’s all-time favourite Rhapsody in Blue at the Hong Kong City Hall Concert Hall on 14 & 15 June. Underpinning the evening is the Hong Kong premiere of Michel Camilo’s Piano Concerto no.1. The three-part fantasia showcases Camilo’s superhuman keyboard virtuosity with a tropical tint. The work encompasses traditions from his own background while echoing early 20th composers such as Stravinsky and Copland. Argentinean composer Ginastera is acclaimed for infusing national elements with modernism. Inspired by the life on the ranches in Argentina, the Estancia Suite has colourful orchestration and bold harmonies. Combined with a large complement of percussion instruments, conductor Ernest Martinez Izquierdo invites you on a dancing journey to Argentina. “While Camilo plays 'the ink' of Gershwin's scores [Rhapsody in Blue], he embellishes the works with grooves and accents.” --- Billboard The night will be concluded by the pulsating Rhapsody in Blue, Gershwin’s most popular concert work. With the trademark glissando opening by the clarinet, be ready to swing with Camilo’s groovy playing.

Contact: A Journal for Contemporary Music (1971-1988) http://contactjournal.gold.ac.uk Citation Reynolds, Lyndon. 1975. ‘Miles et Alia’. Contact, 11. pp. 23-26. ISSN 0308-5066. ! [I] LYNDON REYNOLDS Ill Miles et Alia The list of musicians who have played with Miles Davis since 1966 contains a remarkable number of big names, including Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Tony Williams, Chick Corea, Joe Zawinul, Jack de Johnette, Dave Hol l and, John McLaughlin and Miroslav Vitous. All of these have worked success fully without Miles, and most have made a name for themselves whilst or since working with him. Who can say whether this is due to the limelight given them by playing alongside , Miles, the musical rewards of working with him, or Miles's talent-spotting abili- ties? Presumably the truth is a mixture of all these. What does Miles's music owe to the creative personalities of the musicians working with him? This question is unanswerable in practice, for one cannot quan- tify individual responsibility for a group product - assuming that is what Miles's music is. It is obvious that he has chosen very creative musicians with which to work, and yet there has often been an absence of conspicuous, individual, free solo playing in his music since about 1967. It would appear that Miles can absorb musical influences without losing his balance. What we find then, is a nexus of interacting musicians, centring on Miles; that is, musicians who not only play together in various other combinations, but influence each other as well. Even if the web could be disentangled (I know not how, save with a God's-eye-view), a systematic review of all the music that lies within it would be a task both vast and boring.

Hybridity and Identity in the Pan-American Jazz Piano Tradition by William D. Scott Bachelor of Arts, Central Michigan University, 2011 Master of Music, University of Michigan, 2013 Master of Arts, University of Michigan, 2015 Submitted to the Graduate Faculty of The Kenneth P. Heller, PhD Hybridity and Identity in the Pan-American Jazz Piano Tradition William D. Scott, PhD University of Pittsburgh, 2019 The term Latin jazz has often been employed by record labels, critics, and musicians alike to denote idioms ranging from Afro-Cuban music, to Brazilian samba and bossa nova, and more broadly to Latin American fusions with jazz. While many of these genres have coexisted under the Latin jazz heading in one manifestation or another, Panamanian pianist Danilo Pérez uses the expression “Pan-American jazz” to account for both the Afro-Cuban jazz tradition and non-Cuban Latin American fusions with jazz. Throughout this dissertation, I unpack the notion of Pan-American jazz from a variety of theoretical perspectives including Latinx identity discourse, transcription and musical analysis, and hybridity theory.

  • Raffaele Casarano OLTREMARE Project Available in Duo, Trio, Quartet
Raffaele Casarano OLTREMARE Project available in duo, trio, quartet https://youtu.be/7uqfU5Sxemg Raffaele Casarano is considered one of the most talented and well-known musicians of the Italian New Jazz Generation, flagship of Paolo Fresu Tǔk Music. "Oltremare" is his fourth album published by Fresu label and it was released on June 15th 2018. Raffaele Casarano with this new project has given life to a new phase of his career, launched from the moment of great professional maturity achieved towards consecration at European level. This new and important musical adventure sees Raffaele even more attentive and sensitive to one of the central themes of our contemporaneity such as immigration, diversity, respect for all forms of life. The saxophonist is here as the leader of an international band (Manu Katché on drums, Lars Danielsson on double bass and cello and Eric Legnini on piano, Fender Rodhes and Synth) and the mind of a different musical research, which sinks directly into the soul of the same musicians, in the roots of African gospel and African deppest sonorities, soul music and hip hop. Without changing the original soul of it, the project is also available in two "slim" versions: in trio with the Legnini and Michele Papadia or in a duo with only Eric Legnini. An ambitious band in any way is declined! Raffaele composed all the pieces of the new repertoire and has tried to give the group a deep and impact sound. The group moves in his music like a single body, in which all the elements must be perfectly integrated and balanced.

I was nineteen or twenty... the atmosphere warmed up fast... my heart began to accelerate, becoming more important than the music, shaking the bars of my rib cage, compressing my lungs so the air could no longer enter them. Gripped by panic at the idea of dying there in the middle of spasms, stomping feet, and the crowd howling, I ran into the street like someone possessed... “I’m going to die. I’m going to die. I’m going to die” (Cardinal in Stallybrass & White, The Politics & Poetics of Transgression 181). Marie Cardinal is facing death by contamination, death by Artaud’s plague. Not the death of performance, but death by performance. She is running, she is going, fast forwarding the future, sprinting to her death. What engenders Marie Cardinal’s phobic phonics performance? Is her asphyxiation caused by Satchmo’s “quixotic leaps or ellipses (quantum lump in one’s throat)” (Mackey, Djbot Baghostus’s Run 19)? The sonic and linguistic channels are saturated with soma. The stage and what it emanates slips inside skin and impacts the core. She is out of wind. As a speaker, she is blown, ruptured by frequencies beyond her capacity. She is running and the wind is blowing against her, she is advancing backwards, her fast forward is rewinding.
