There have been various estimates of the prevalence of hepatitis B and C infections in Nigeria. Recent studies have shown the prevalence to be lower than previously reported. The different populations studied might be responsible for this. It is important to have a real population data that would inform the policies to be adopted for eradication. We set out to determine the prevalence, risk factors, and pattern of hepatitis B and C in Benue State, Central Nigeria. Four thousand and five (4,005) subjects, aged 1 year and older, were selected through a multistage random sampling to represent all parts of the state. Trained health workers administered a validated questionnaire. Rapid test kits were standardized and used in determining the prevalence of the respective viruses. Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) and antibodies to hepatitis C virus (anti-HCV) were found to be positive in 5% and 1%, respectively, of subjects screened. The prevalence varied from one local government area to another, with HBsAg being 8% in the highest to 2% in the lowest LGC, and anti-HCV being 3% in the highest and 0% in the lowest. -

Special RepoRt on nIgeria’s BENUe s t A t e BENUE STATE: FACTS AND FIGURES Origin: Benue State derives its name from the River Benue, the second largest river in Nigeria and the most prominent geographical feature in the state Date of creation: February 1976 Characteristics: Rich agricultural region; full of rivers, breadbasket of Nigeria. Present Governor: Chief George Akume Population: 5 million Area: 34,059 sq. kms Capital: Makurdi Number of local government: 23 Traditional councils: Tiv Traditional Council, headed by the Tor Tiv; and Idoma Traditional Council, headed by the Och’Idoma. And Waya, J.I4. 1 (Department of Botany, Federal University Lafia, Nigeria) 2 (Department of Crop and Environmental Protection, University of Agriculture, Makurdi, Nigeria) 3 (Department of Biological Sciences, Federal UniversityDutsin-Ma, Nigeria) 4(Department of Biological Sciences, Benue State University, Makurdi) Abstract: Farmers’ fields were surveyed for incidence and severity of various diseases of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum) in Benue State in the rainy seasons of 2012 and 2013. Data on farmers’ characteristics in four major tomato growing Local Government Areas (LGAs) was collected through semi-structured interview of 40 heads of major tomato growing households, and analyzed by simple percentages. Disease incidence was assessed using the quadrat method. Results revealed that Majority of commercial tomato growers in the study area were female (65%), above 30 years of age (72.5%), attained mostly ordinary level of education (70%), married (90%), with a workforce of 6-10 (55%) and a tomato growing experience of 6-10 years (27%). All tomato farmers (100%) in the study were completely reliant on local tomato varieties. Tarka LGA recorded the highest and significantly different (P<0.05) disease incidence (80.80%) followed by Buruku (76.04%), Gboko (71.50%) and lastly Ushongo (62.69%). Disease was highest in the month of July and symptoms progressed faster in the year 2012. -

REQUEST FOR PROPOSAL Living Income Benchmarking (LIB) Study in Nigeria 1 1.0 General Information This document is being issued in order to solicit applications from potential [firms or consultants] to conduct a living income benchmarking study. The activity entails collecting data in four states in Nigeria, precisely in Ogun State (Odeda Local Government Area - LGA, Ijebu-Ode LGA, Ewekoro LGA, and Odogbolu LGA), Edo State (Ikpoba Okha LGA, Oredo LGA, Egor LGA), Benue State (Agatu LGA, Guma LGA, Gwer-East LGA, Gwer-West LGA, Logo LGA, Okpokwu LGA, Ogbadigbo LGA, and Kwande LGA), and Nasarawa State (Awe LGA, Doma LGA, Lafia LGA, Obi LGA). It will require at least 19 qualitative interviews (19 Focus Group Discussions and 57 Key Informant Interviews), 19 market surveys and an extensive secondary data review. Ultimately, HI anticipates the consultant to consolidate the LIBs based on cost similarities in the States, LGAs or location (Rural/Urban). The terms of reference contain background information, the desired methodology, including objectives, the timeframe, and a list of deliverables. This document also contains information about the kind of expertise that Heifer seeks for this activity and guidance on how to submit a proposal to conduct the activity. Heifer anticipates awarding a fixed award for the study and make payments based on submission and Heifer’s approval of deliverables. GIROH (Received 5 May 2015; Revision Accepted 17 September 2015) ABSTRACT The study examined the efficiency of resource use in soybean production in Gboko Local Government Area of Benue State, Nigeria. The objectives of the study were to identify and describe the socio economic characteristics of soybean farmers and to determine resource allocation among soybean farmers. Multi-stage random sampling technique was used to select a sample of 120 respondents. Data collected were subjected to Descriptive statistics and production function analysis. The result revealed that 93.3% of the farmers had one form of formal education, or the other with over 65% cultivating between 1-4 hectares. Also, 87.5% of the farmers were in their active age, and 81.7% utilized their personal saving as a major source of finance for production. The result of the production function analysis indicated that 87.21% of the variation in the output of soybean is explained for by the independent variables. Resource-use efficiency revealed that quantity of seed, farm size, herbicide and inorganic fertilizer were underutilized while labour was over utilized. Provision of adequate and timely farming inputs, making loans accessible to farmers and reasonable market price of soybean are essential to boost production. -

The land use practices considered were those associated with agriculture and urbanization. Six classes including forest, grassland, cultivated area, urban area, bare surfaces and water were considered for assessment and classification of images by carrying out field work and using topographical maps. The magnitude of change of forest area for 20years between 1988 to 2008 showed that forest decreased by -175.40. km2 representing a change (49.99%) of the total change for the period. Forest had the highest annual rate of change of 9.99% while farm land had the least annual rate of change of 1.18%. The period witnessed an increase in other vegetation and built up area. The land increased by 50.26 km2 representing 14.33% of the total change, while built up increased by76.35 (21.76%). These changes could be attributed to the urbanization, increase in commercial activities and increase in population, agricultural activities and amongst others. -

Dam, [email protected] ABSTRACT: The structure of road network connectivity in any region can either promote or reduce agricultural production, market opportunities, cultural and social interactions as well as businesses and employment opportunities. This study evaluates road network connectivity in the Benue Basin of Nigeria. Data on the existing road network including type and conditions, density and length of the roads in the study area were extracted from existing road map of Nigeria, and satellite imagery of the Benue basin. The data was analysed using different methods of network connectivity analysis including beta index, alpha and gamma indices. The findings reveal four types of roads network in the basin which are grouped into three categories namely: federal highways (trunk A), state government roads (trunk B) and local government and community roads (trunk C) which are in various state of deplorable conditions.
