Biographical Note Jonathan Davis Hale (1817-1898) was the Chief of Spies for the Union command in Tennessee. His wife, Pheroba, stayed on their Mill in Fentress County, Tennessee during the Civil War. Arrangement Arranged as follows: Boxes 1-6: Correspondence and Documents; Box 7: Notebooks; Box 8: Printed Material and Ephemera. Each series is arranged chronological. Scope and Content The voluminous correspondence, notebooks, affidavits, eyewitness testimonies, and published pamphlets of the family of Jonathan D. Hale contain a wealth of previously unknown information about the Civil War in Tennessee and Kentucky, including the organization of Unionist communities; women’s contributions to the war effort; guerrilla warfare; the fate of Unionists' slaves; Reconstruction in East Tennessee and the rise of the Ku Klux Klan; and complicated and bitter politics of veterans' affairs in the wake of the Civil War. The letters, orders, reports, and communications written during Hale's services with General George H. Thomas (1816–1870) is a unique resource for historians of Civil War civilian scouts and guides, a topic that remains largely unexplored. The papers of Jonathan Davis Hale and Pheroba Ann Chilton Hale chiefly contain correspondence between husband and wife, 1850s-1890s, concentrated 1861-1870. Includes 88 letters from Pheroba to Jonathan, 1862-1865; 12 letters from Pheroba to Jonathan, 1869-1870, detailing problems at the Mill after Jonathan fled the Klan; 62 letters from Jonathan to Pheroba; Jonathan's notebook, 1864-1872; 40 pages of memoranda and correspondence of Hale, 1862-1865, as General Thomas' Chief Scout; another Hale notebook containing signed testimonial statements and other commentary from those injured, charging as guerrillas, Champ Ferguson, Galen Elliott and Henry Sublett, 1865; plus other war related material including unrecorded pamphlets, etc, 1872-1892. There are also letters by General William S. Rosecrans as well as the Ku Jonathan D. Hale papers mssJDH 1-377 2 Klux Klan (threatening Hale's life for his role in Champ Ferguson's death). Nowland ABSTRACT During the United States Civil War, southwestern Virginia was mired in a bloody guerrilla conflict that involved Confederate irregular combatants defending the region from invading or raiding Union Army forces. Simmering for the entirety of the war, this conflict revolved around the Virginia and Tennessee Railroad (V&T), a critical railway that ran through southwestern Virginia and connected the southwestern Confederacy with Richmond and the rest of Virginia. As the war progressed, this railway moved increasingly large amounts of foodstuffs and minerals vital to the Confederate war effort, and by the later stages of the war it was the most important railway in the South. Union Army commanders in West Virginia recognized the incredible importance of the V&T to the Confederacy, and launched a multitude of major and minor invasions and raids into southwestern Virginia with the intent of crippling the railroad. Confederate partisan rangers, bushwhackers, and home guards played separate roles in weakening, distracting, and hampering Union Army operations in southwestern Virginia, thereby helping to defend the V&T from attacks.

BENTON COUNTY Fighting on the Tennessee River: located at Birdsong Marina, 225 Marina Rd., Hwy 191 N., Camden, TN 38327. During the Civil War, several engagements occurred along the strategically important Tennessee River within about five miles of here. In each case, cavalrymen engaged naval forces. On April 26, 1863, near the mouth of the Duck River east of here, Confederate Maj. Robert M. White’s 6th Texas Rangers and its four-gun battery attacked a Union flotilla from the riverbank. The gunboats Autocrat, Diana, and Adams and several transports came under heavy fire. When the vessels drove the Confederate cannons out of range with small-arms and artillery fire, Union Gen. Alfred W. Ellet ordered the gunboats to land their forces; signalmen on the exposed decks “wig-wagged” the orders with flags. BLOUNT COUNTY Maryville During the Civil War: located at 301 McGee Street, Maryville, TN 37801. During the antebellum period, Blount County supported abolitionism. In 1822, local Quakers and other residents formed an abolitionist society, and in the decades following, local clergymen preached against the evils of slavery. When the county considered secession in 1861, residents voted to remain with the Union, 1,766 to 414. Fighting directly touched Maryville, the county seat, in August 1864. Confederate Gen. Joseph Wheeler’s cavalrymen attacked a small detachment of the 2nd Tennessee Infantry (U.S.) under Lt. James M. Dorton at the courthouse. The trial of Captain Henry Wiz began on August 23, 1865 and lasted for 63 days. The prosecution and defense called over 140 witnesses during the trial. Lewis Schade led the defense. Colonel N. P. Originals and photocopies. 1956.7.1 BIOGRAPHY Champ Ferguson was born November 29, 1821, on a branch of Spring Creek in Clinton County, Kentucky, to William and Zilphia (Huff) Ferguson. His education was limited. He became a farmer and owned a few tracts of land in Clinton County, Kentucky. In 1844 he married Eliza Smith who died three years later; in 1848 he married Martha Owens, a native of Clinton County, and they had a daughter, Ann, born in 1849. Caught up in the Civil War border tension between Kentucky and Tennessee, Ferguson participated in guerrilla warfare. His band of guerillas claimed respectability by riding with General John Hunt Morgan, where Ferguson first started as a scout in 1862. Ferguson spent most of the war commanding, with the commissioned rank of captain, an independent guerilla company.
