    Album review: Carla Bruni's Little French Songs Kyle Doyle French Pop Music Examiner Little French Songs by Carla Bruni Released on April 1st, 2013, Little French Songs is Carla Bruni's fourth album and first release in almost five years. Before viewing the track listening, Little French Songs seems like it might be a cover album, but greets the audience with 10 originals and 1 fresh adaption by Bruni. The listener is immediately drawn in by the melancholic love song "J'arrive à toi," which so well embodies the nostalgia and romance found in traditional French chanson. The following tracks offer the best of all of Bruni's moods with songs like "Prière" and "Darling" echoing the nostalgia and calm found on Comme si de rien n'était (2008), while the delicious journey of "Chez Keith et Anita" and bounce of "Mon Raymond" provide the album with a little lift. Carla offers some edge with "Pas Une Dame," which almost seems to be the ex-First Lady's farewell from life at L'Élysée, reclaiming her freedom and asserting that she isn't much of a lady after all. "La valse posthume"offers something new from Carla, following in the footsteps of Serge Gainsbourg by adding lyrics to a waltz by Chopin. The overarching theme of Little French Songs seems to be a celebration of classic French chanson, in which Carla tries to appeal to both domestic and foreign audiences, embodied in the not-so-title track "Little French Song." Here, mixing French and English, Carla seems to be making a plea to the French audience to return to chanson and the sentiment it contains by extolling the the likes of Piaf, Barbara and Trenet, while also pandering to the exoticism and romanticism of foreign audiences, reminding them of how wherever in the world they may be French music can take them on a journey to Paris.

Since then the singer revisited a selection of international standards from a range of genres – from Depeche Mode’s “Enjoy the Silence” and the Rolling Stones’ “Miss You” to “Moon River” by Henry Mancini, popularized by Audrey Hepburn – in a collection titled French Touch, which was warmly welcomed by fans around the world (more than 250K albums sold worldwide). This project was successfully followed by an extensive international tour. Bruni, whose talents as an authentic singer-songwriter were discovered 18 years ago, is rarely without her notepads. She writes her songs by hand, a process that’s very important to her – she has an irrepressible need for this immediate contact between emotions and paper, and this passion shines through in the collection of songs on this new album. She wrote them in a slow process that accelerated into fruition over a few weeks last autumn. Month after month, something rose, just like in the first single of her new album "Quelque Chose", that speaks about the awakening of some mysterious thing. At the end of the journey is a return to the very essence of the artist’s feelings and a naturally eponymous album. As always with Bruni, the songs speak about the eternal desire to love and the great adventure of our lives but they also reveal an innate sense of freedom and fantasy.     Carla Bruni: Little French Songs All Music By Thom Jurek Little French Songs Carla Bruni’s first album since 2008's Comme Si de Rien N’Etait, and her first outing as France's former first lady. Reception in the English-speaking press on the European side of the Atlantic has been middling at best, while in France the album has been greeted with more enthusiasm. The truth may lie somewhere in between for most, but for those with at least a working knowledge of the French chanson tradition, both in its formal sense and through its various revolutionary phases, they will find that most of this fits squarely inside it (though that knowledge is not necessary to enjoy the album). One can hear Bruni’s love of artists from Georges Brassens and Charles Trénet to Pierre Barouh and Serge Gainsbourg in these simple yet elegant tunes. She wrote most of the album herself. Its economic production is driven by a nylon-string guitar in the forefront, adorned by some sparse brass here, a minimal harmonium or Wurlitzer there, a drum or percussion elsewhere. On "Mon Raymond," she celebrates her husband Nicolas Sarkozy while utterly -- and comedically -- humanizing him. By contrast, she wryly skewers his successor French President François Hollande ("Le Pingouin") as boring and without personality -- indulging in sass befitting Brigitte Fontaine. Her breezy yet moving adaptation of Trénet’s nugget "Dolce Francia" contains a spoken word introduction with Taofik Farah's guitar and Ballake Sissoko's kora atop a breezy violincello and shakers. She makes this classic her own.

    Album Review: Carla Bruni- Little French Songs Slant Magazine By Ted Scheinman Published on April 16, 2013 Though Carla Bruni has never failed to enchant front-page editors at European tabloids, her duties as first lady of France precluded her efforts as an artiste in various media—the exception being a spin 'round the Rodin Museum in Woody Allen's Midnight in Paris. These days, thanks to François Hollande, Bruni has a lot of time to spare. Few heads will turn at another album in homage to French pop of the 1960s (her fourth such), but it's important to note how playful Bruni is on Little French Songs, an album that exudes a sense of liberation. "Liberté, tu dois bien exister," she sings on "Liberté." (Translation: "Liberty, you simply must exist.") The album's charm is in Bruni's ability to transmit this school's-out-for-summer vibe via patter songs, blasé scats, and conversational dips into her lower register—a confessional, near-sultry technique that evokes an intimacy in keeping with the album's self-conscious but also self- effacing title. The songs here are originals, all but two credited to Bruni alone, including "Le Pingouin," a delightful, chatty little parable, "Darling," a well-turned elegy, and "La Valse Posthume," in which Bruni offers tips on what to do with your feet—tips that work in other situations as well. Throughout, Bruni casually lifts snatches from tunes by her referents, not just Serge Gainsbourg and Edith Piaf, but Charles Aznavour and even Joni Mitchell. These borrowings are to be expected in an homage, and Bruni repurposes them to fine effect in sinusoidal melodies that feel drawn from some forgotten LP in an attic in the Latin Quarter, just before 1968 and all that messy business in Paris.

Mendelssohn, photographer, 1890. Bibliothèque nationale de France. ii Abstract This thesis is a study of the music of Cécile Chaminade (1857-1944) and how present it was within the music traditions of colonial New Zealand. Chaminade was a French composer who enjoyed considerable success in North America and Europe during her lifetime, and the original premise of this study was to establish whether she had a similar presence as a composer in New Zealand. Drawing mainly from newspapers and archived programmes, a list of over four hundred concerts featuring her piano music and her songs has been compiled. It has revealed that a great percentage of her piano music performed in New Zealand actually occurred in student concerts, an aspect of music teaching neglected in most studies of music history. This list also indicates how well placed Chaminade’s songs were, in the repertoire of the singers of the day, both international and local, professional and amateur. Divided into two distinct chapters, the first chapter traces, for the first time, the origins of concerts specifically staged for music pupils, as well as discussing the practices of prominent music teachers throughout New Zealand, and how the present the music of Chaminade was in the repertoire, particularly that of piano ensembles (many hands, many pianos). There is also a discussion of the British examination systems and the Performing Arts Competitions, their choices of repertoire, and their relevance to the development of New Zealand’s young musicians of the time.
