PUR Volume 97 January 16, 1991 Issue #14 Winter Fest '91: a huge success Dr* Lowery to speak at Rollins Close friend of King honors his memory The Reverend Doctor Joseph Echols Lowery, the current President of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) and close friend of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., will be speaking to the Rollins community on Wednesday, Jan. 16 at 7:30 p.m. in the Knowles Chapel as part of the weeklong celebration honoring the achievements of Dr. King. Lowery was one of the key figures of the Equal Rights Movement in the 1960s and as President of the SCLC, is still working to establish racial equality. As an international leader for human rights, Lowery was given the 1990 Martin Luther King Jr. Nonviolent Peace Prize, the Urban League and NAACP Leadership Awards, the Alpha Phi Alpha Human Rights Award in 1985, and was nominated as one of the 15 greatest Black preachers and winner of the 1990 award in Religion by Ebony Maga­ zine.

The formal Spanish Garden which connects the Knowles Memorial Chapel and the Annie Russell Theatre. It embodies the age- old tradition of the close relationship between religion and drama. It is somewhat reminiscent of an old monastery garden with its fountain of tile surrounded by majestic evergreen trees and cool green grass divided into long, narrow avenues. The garden is one of the beauty spots of the campus and provides a quiet retreat for meditation. The Chapel Garden was designed by Edith Fairfax Davenport of Zellwood, Florida, and was created through the generosity of Mrs. George E. Warren. It constitutes a complete unit in the architectural plan of the new Rollins. Other gardens, similar in nature, will be placed between and about all new buildings as they are added from time to time, thus contributing to the distinction of the completed campus which President Holt hop:s will closely resemble a Spanish medieval village.
