1. Safety precautions

Danger of burns! Flasks and the interior of the heating unit may be hot!

To avoid the possible burns, do not touch the surface of the and flasks that are hot during heating procedure!

Electrical shock hazard!

Avoid the contact of electrical cable with the hot inner area of the heating unit; it is possible the insulation failure! Do not spill liquids on the contacts or inside the heating unit! Always unplug the power cord at the operation end! Only authorized personnel of the service centre should repair the equipment.

Risk of injury in case of breakage! Be careful when working with glass parts.

Extreme caution when working with acids and bases!

Risk of burns or damages! The organic solvent should avoid to be exposed to the condition with fire or static electricity, for there is a risk of explosion in placing organic solvent! Refer to the appropriate material safety data sheet for reagent handling instructions.

The risk of toxic fumes!

Always perform the extraction that releases toxic and corrosive fumes, in the exhaust hood.

Do not use the device in wet areas or areas full of explosive vapours! Max. Humidity – 80%! Max. Temperature – 40 ºC!

DO NOT SWITCH ON WITHOUT A GROUND!

Switch the device only in proper and safety power socket.

This instrument is equipped with grounding-type plug, which is required to be connected to a grounded power socket.

3. General Description

The extractors are designed for multiple fat extractions according to the Soxhlet methods, mainly for fat determination in food, feed, raw materials for their production and soluble organic compound in different fields such as agriculture, environment.

Depending on the model and configuration, the system consists of four or six individually adjustable heaters for round bottom flasks of 250 ml or 500 ml that are used in conjunction with the extractors of 100 ml or 250 ml, respectively.

Operation of the apparatus is permitted only in strict compliance with all the recommendations in this Instruction Manual.

4. Installation

4.1 Installation Conditions 4.1.1 This instrument should be mounted near water source and drain tank on the work position equipped with power socket. 4.1.2 Power configurations should meet power-up requirements, so electrical overload can be avoided; power supply should be grounded and has single power switch and safety device, so operator’s safety is guaranteed during electrical operation. 4.1.3 This instrument should be mounted on the place with good ventilation conditions. 4.2 Installation Steps 4.2.1 Fix the core supports:

4.2.2 Set the holder of extractors on the core supports and lock it with the locking screws (on the left and right sides):

4.2.3 Set the condenser’s holder on the core supports and tighten 2 cap nuts on the top. Cap nuts

4.2.4 Place the adapters with round bottom flasks 250 ml on the heating platform, adjust the gap “A” on the distance between the top of flask and the bottom of extractor’s holder (for convenience, the gap “A” should be approx. 10 mm):

5. Summary of Extractors Operation

5.1 Sample Preparation:

Weight the dry sample and put into the extraction thimble. Cover the top of thimble with a fat-free cotton swab and insert the thimble into the extractor. Set the extractor on the holder. Fill in the round bottom flask with solvent by halves. Place the flask into the adapter on the and insert the extractor to the flask. Connect the condenser to the extractor and turn on cold water inlet. Check visual flow at the drain area.

5.2 Heating unit turn on:

Plug the unit into an electrical outlet. Turn the main power switch, located on the front side of the heating unit, to the position “I”.

5.3 Extraction start:

5.3.1 Adjust the heating intensity for each sample individually using the heating power control. Make sure all heating elements heat properly.

5.3.2 The heating intensity should ensure the uniform boiling of solvent and the formation of a sufficient condensate amount for the best sample extraction.

5.4 Extraction end:

Turn off the heat and turn off the device at the main switch after the extraction end.

6. Maintenance

6.1 Service of the housing and the core supports with holders

The housing and the core support with holders for extractors and condensers are resistance to wear. Not recommended to clean with aggressive and abrasive cleaners.

6.2 Service of the round bottom flasks and extractors

Remove the round bottom flasks and extractors out of the instrument for cleaning. Do not use aggressive and abrasive cleaners.

6.3 Service of the Dimroth condensers

Disconnect the condensers out of the extractors and set them on the stand for condensers. Disconnect hoses from condensers and clean it from rust using citric or acetic acid solution.
