This thesis examines the development from the novel perspective of medievalism—the study of the Middle Ages as an imaginative construct in western society after their actual demise. It offers a selection of the best known neo-Gothic artifacts in the city, describes the technological innovations which distinguish them from the medievalist architecture of the nineteenth century, and shows the motivation for their creation. The significance of the California Arts and Crafts movement is explained, and profiles are offered of the two leading medievalist architects of the period, Bernard Maybeck and Julia Morgan. -

HOMBRES Y MUJERES MURALISTAS ON A MISSION: PAINTING LATINO IDENTITIES IN 1970S SAN FRANCISCO Cary Cordova American Studies, Dickinson College, Carlisle, PA Abstract This article argues for the importance of murals as cultural texts, consciously formed to entertain, influence, and solidify local and transnational communities. In 1974, two teams of artists painted two legendary murals in San Francisco’s Mission District: In ‘‘Homage to Siqueı´ros,’’ the trio of male muralists presented themselves as heirs to famed Mexican muralists in order to solidify their indictment of conditions in the Americas and counter the participatory role of their patron, the Bank of America. In ‘‘Latino America,’’ the female muralists rejected the Chicano Movement’s emphasis on Mexican masters and declared a new feminist, collaborative iconography. Although the murals were dissimilar in terms of gender, approach, and aesthetics, the muralists were joined in their desire to unite the local Latino community through their depictions of a shared homeland, or an imagined Latin America. This article highlights the aesthetic, cultural, political, gendered, and regional dimensions of Latino identities through the lens of mural creation. Latino encounters with media systems have generally taken place on three levels: Anglo media, Spanish language media, and bilingual/bicultural media. The English language or Anglo media have portrh7ed the Latino with negative stereotypes and reported Latino new.= everts and culture with white middle class bias. Latinos are underrepresented in employment by these inaustries. Spanish language media, particularly newspapers, have a long history dating back to 1808. Spanish language broadcasting experienced growth during the 1970s, but most radio and television broadcasting stations are owned and managed by Anglos, staffed by Latin Americans rather than local Latinos, and depend heavily on imported programs produced and aired in Latin America. Bilingual/bicultural media are directed at the Latino audience in English or a combination of'Spanish and English, and this format is becoming more apparent in traditional media. 1969 Budget Analysis: Capital Outlay
Capital Outlay CAP IT At. OUTLAY Summary 1968 Program The Budget Act of 1968 as signed by the Governor contained ap proximately $146,046,000 for capital outlay. Of this, $71,620,000 was from the General ]'und and the balance from (1) various special funds ($50,775,000), excluding water and highways, and (2) bond funds in the areas of recreation, parks and junior college state construction as sistance ($23,651,000). There are a number of observations pertinent to the amount and nature of this 1968 outlay total. First, it was the smallest capital outlay appropriation since the fiscal year 1962-63. Second, the amount of bond funds was relatively minor for the first time in ten years. Third, it contained an item of some $3,340,000 for purposes which had been treated as local assistance in previous budget acts. Fourth, overall it represented essentially a "pay-as-you-go" construction program. In addition to the $71,620,000 directly appropriated from the Gen eral Fund, it should be noted that of the special funds amount, $37,- 730,000 was from the Capital Outlay Fund for Public Higher Educa tion. This fund is fed by tidelands oil reveneus which otherwise would have accrued to the General Fund. Therefore, as a practical matter, approximately 75 percent of the total 1968 capital outlay appropria tion had its origin in the General Fund. The limited bond funds that were allocated by the 1968 Budget Act were largely directed to higher education (junior colleges). All of the balance of $3 million remaining in the Higher Education Bond Act Fund was allocated to augment projects previously funded from it for the purpose of financing increased costs attributable to a sharp rise in the construction cost index. -

Part of this initiative also includes seeking input from the frequent, infrequent and non-riders through online, intercept and focus group studies that will guide Caltrain efforts in providing the ultimate customer experience. In this first online survey, Caltrain asked the general public to rate and identify priorities, and provide ridership and demographic information. This is not a statistically valid study but it’s the first step to help Caltrain’s improvement process. The results of this survey will inform the questions on the next statistically valid Customer Satisfaction Survey in June. The last study of this series will be a focus group in which Caltrain will test some of the possible improvements and ensure they make a positive impact on riders’ daily use of the system. 1 Methodology The study was developed and launched in Survey Monkey (an online survey tool) as an opt-in survey, meaning that customers (and the general public) could choose to click on the link and complete the survey. -

We’re here to assure you that there is more to San Francisco than Fisherman’s Wharf, cable cars and sourdough bread. There are pupusas, tortillas, Día de los Muertos kitsch, traditional Mexican folk art and edgy, contemporary expressions of what it’s like to be Latino in one of America’s major cities. Maybe it’s the salt air that produces such creativity, talent, skill and can-do attitude among Latinos in this city by the bay. Talamantez Chicano Park and the Chicano Park Murals Chicano Park is a 7.4-acre park located in San Diego City’s Barrio Logan beneath the east-west approach ramps of the San Diego-Coronado Bay Bridge where the bridge bisects Interstate 5. The park was created in 1970 after residents in Barrio Logan participated in a “takeover” of land that was being prepared for a substation of the California Highway Patrol. Barrio Logan the second largest barrio on the West Coast until national and state transportation and urban renewal public policies, of the 1950’s and 1960’s, relocated thousands of residents from their self-contained neighborhood to create Interstate 5, to rezone the area from residential to light industrial, and to build the San Diego-Coronado Bay Bridge.
