In The Chosen Place, The Timeless People, she concentrates on history, culture and myth. She reveals events on a human, historic, and cultural continuum that evokes a time past in time present. This study attempts to examine poetics of prophecy in Paule Marshall’s novels. KEYWORDS: Paule Marshall, poetics of prophecy, Colonialism, Time, Culture, History. INTRODUCTION Then she remembered the two silver bangles she had always worn. She pushed up her coat sleeve and stretched one until it passed over her wrist, and, without turning, hurled it high over her shoulder. The bangle rose behind her, a bit of silver against the moon, then curved swiftly downward and struck a stone. A frail sound in that utter silence (Marshall 1959:255). With these lines concludes Paule Marshall's first novel Brown Girl, Brownstones and we are immediately brought into the world of ontological transmutation of the black woman's existential conditions in America. Selina's symbolic act of tossing the bangle high into the air and abandoning the Chauncey Street tenements and brownstone houses, where she grew up, is in itself a testimony to Marshall's prophetic vision that announced that the black woman in America was no more a mule of the world (Hurston 1938:29) carrying the burden heaped on her back but a radiant female hero. -

MILNE, LEAH A., PhD. “Necessary Fictions”: Authorship and Transethnic Identity in Contemporary American Narratives. (2015) Directed by Dr. Christian Moraru. 352 pp. As a theory and political movement of the late 20th century, multiculturalism has emphasized recognition, tolerance, and the peaceful coexistence of cultures, while providing the groundwork for social justice and the expansion of the American literary canon. However, its sometimes uncomplicated celebrations of diversity and its focus on static, discrete ethnic identities have been seen by many as restrictive. As my project argues, contemporary ethnic American novelists are pushing against these restrictions by promoting what I call transethnicity, the process by which one formulates a dynamic conception of ethnicity that cuts across different categories of identity. Through the use of self-conscious or metafictional narratives, authors such as Louise Erdrich, Junot Díaz, and Percival Everett mobilize metafiction to expand definitions of ethnicity and to acknowledge those who have been left out of the multicultural picture. I further argue that, while metafiction is often considered the realm of white male novelists, ethnic American authors have galvanized self-conscious fiction—particularly stories depicting characters in the act of writing—to defy multiculturalism’s embrace of coherent, reducible ethnic groups who are best represented by their most exceptional members and by writing that is itself correct and “authentic.” Instead, under the transethnic model, ethnicity is self-conflicted, forged through ongoing revision and contestation and in ever- fluid responses to political, economic, and social changes. “NECESSARY FICTIONS”: AUTHORSHIP AND TRANSETHNIC IDENTITY IN CONTEMPORARY AMERICAN NARRATIVES by Leah A. Looking back over the course of Elizabeth Palmer Pea-body ’ s life, every important development in her early years seems to have prepared her for a life in educational reform and a role as America ’ s foremost advocate of kindergarten education. Her mother, Elizabeth Palmer, was an “ independent, well educated ” woman who managed a boardinghouse for students in Atkinson, New Hampshire, and went by the name of the “ Walking Dictionary ” because her extensive reading enabled her to answer all questions put to her by the boarders. Palmer married Nathaniel Peabody, a teacher at the academy, in November 1802 and moved to Andover, Massachusetts, where they administered the North Andover Free School. In 1804 they moved again, to Billerica, Massachusetts, where Elizabeth Palmer Peabody was born on 16 May. There Elizabeth ’ s mother established a boarding school for girls but abandoned it after two years and moved again to Cambridge and finally to Salem, where Peabody spent the remainder of her childhood. In Salem, Elizabeth ’ s mother established a school for children and pioneered an innovative approach to early childhood education that would make a lasting impression on her daughter. “ It seems to me, ” she remarked some years later, “ that the self- activity of the mind was cultivated by my mother ’ s method in her school. Not so much was poured in — more was brought out. ” Peabody followed in her mother ’ s footsteps in one other important way: education was at the center of her life from an early age. -

This self-described ploughman poet knew well the surge of freedom which dominated much of Europe and North America in the waning days of the eight eenth century. Bums understood the spirit and the politics of the fledgling United States. He studied the battles of both ideas and infantry. Check your knowledge of American history against Bums's. These few lines from his "Ballad on the American War" trace the Revolution from the Boston Tea Party, through the Colonists' invasion of Canada, the siege of Boston, the stalemated occupation of Philadelphia and New York, the battle of Saratoga, the southern campaign and Clinton's failure to support Cornwallis at Yorktown. INTRODUCTION OTHER VOICES The Fiction of Raymond Federman Jeffrey R. Di Leo BEFORE—AND AFTER—THEORY Over the past thirty or so years, the fi ction of Raymond Federman has been the subject of a good deal of scholarship in multiple languages. Numerous critical studies of his work have been published.1 Also, doctoral dissertations2 have been written about him, and several volumes celebrating his achieve- ments3 have come out. This is in addition to the many articles and book chapters devoted his work. However, in spite of this wealth of attention, the full range of Federman’s achievements have yet to be fully recognized by the academic community. One of the reasons for this lack of recognition stems from the ways in which Federman’s novels have been categorized. In the United States, Federman’s work has most commonly been connected with a group of writers that brought new “life” to American fi ction in the wake of pro- nouncements of the death of the novel in the late 1960s.4 As such, his revitalizing, innovative peers include Donald Barthelme, Robert Coover, Steve Katz, Clarence Major, Ishmael Reed, Gilbert Sorrentino, and Ronald Sukenick. While the identifi cation of Federman with this group of writers is accurate, important, and not without its merits, in the long run, it has served to exclude or marginalize his work from other—and arguably even more signifi cant—contexts.
