Visions of Dubai Launched in September 2007 in association with the World Gold Council, the Visions of Dubai (VoD) gold coin is one of DMCC’s key initiatives celebrating Dubai’s status as the ‘City of Gold’. The UAE’s first souvenir commemorative gold coin, VoD is designed to reflect Dubai’s visionary leadership and its innovative development projects. The first edition of the exclusively crafted coins carry an image of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, on one side and on the other, the world’s only seven-star hotel, the iconic Burj Al Arab. The second edition, VoD – Palm Edition, was launched in 2010 and carried on the second side an engraved image of the Palm Jumeirah, Dubai’s iconic island project. Created using 999.9 24-carat gold, the purest form of gold, and available in four different sizes, the coins carry DMCC’s stamp of quality and authenticity, and can be purchased as a wise investment opportunity, a memorable gift, or even a cherished collector’s item. The VoD coins are produced by Emirates Gold Refinery DMCC, which is accredited by Dubai Good Delivery; a standard developed and monitored by DMCC. Gold is considered the most persistent ‘conflict mineral’ today, with more than half of the estimated 800 artisanal gold mines in eastern DRC under illegal rebel or army control.1 Almost the entire production of these mines—98% according to the United Nations—is smuggled out of the country, implying enormous tax losses to the Congolese fiscus.2 While the majority of DRC’s diamonds are produced outside the notorious conflict zones in the east, and certified as conflict-free though the Kimberley Process (KP), the sector’s contribution to state revenues is hampered due to rampant smuggling and undervaluation.
