Agriculture Salem, OR An Illustrated Key to the Ips, Orthotomicus, and Pseudips of North America Skip to Key Introduction and use of this key Along with members of the genus Dendroctonus, bark beetles in the genus Ips are among the most important members of the subfamily Scolytinae in both the ecological and economic senses. Several of the species are well known for widespread damage in conifer forests and plantations. Two related taxa, some members of which have been traditionally placed within Ips, are also treated herein: Orthotomicus Ferrari and Pseudips Cognato. Accurate identification of members of these taxa is important to tracking the distribution and impacts thereof, especially where human actions may be exerting influence, as in the case of introduced invasive species. Despite the justifiable recognition of the flaws and limitations inherent in a dichotomous key, some taxa do not lend themselves to matrix-based identification aids, such as LUCID™. This is particularly so of taxa such as Ips and the other two genera, whose identification is largely dependent upon the assessment of subtle character states, confounded by sexual dimorphism and variability in character expression. As a consequence, this key is arranged in the standard dichotomous manner. The key is largely based upon that used by the late Stephen L. Wood in his landmark 1982 treatment of North and Central American bark beetles. Several characters I have found unreliable or felt were too difficult to assess have been omitted. -

Considérés comme une perte de revenu potentiel pour l'économie, le gouvernement demande qu'une partie de ces arbres soit récupérée. C'est d'ailleurs une pratique connaissant une tendance à la hausse au niveau mondial. Par contre, la récupération de ce bois est régie par diverses contraintes, dont la rentabilité des opérations et le respect des normes d'aménagement forestier écosystémique (AFE) visant la conservation de la biodiversité associée aux forêts brûlées. La mise en application de l'AFE nécessite de connaître l'impact du feu sur la forêt et ce de façon spatialement explicite. Dans cette optique, nous avons d’abord évalué la sévérité du feu sur le terrain dans 60 sites d’études répartis à travers cinq brûlis. Nous avons ensuite évalué le potentiel du « differenced Normalized Burn Ratio » (dNBR), une méthode de télédétection développée par des chercheurs américains pour estimer la sévérité du feu, à offrir une représentation fidèle des conditions de terrain. Les résultats positifs de cette étape nous ont permis de considérer le dNBR pour bonifier les outils d’aménagement utilisés en forêts brûlées. -

Much of the dead timber whose destruction is attributed to fire is the result of outbreaks of bark-beetles; this is particular^ true in British Columbia. In consequence of their great economic importance, Mr. Swaine has been devoting the greater part of his attention for a number of j^ears to a study of the species of bark- beetles, their life-histories and bionomics. -
Insect Surveys in Hinesburg's Town Forest Following a Wind Event
Vermont Forest Health Insect Surveys in Hinesburg Town Forest Following a Wind Event Department of Forests, Parks, & Recreation April 2014 vtforest.com On December 1, 2010, the Hinesburg Town Forest (837 acres) experienced a windstorm that resulted in damage to about 45 contiguous acres, with a concentrated blowdown that covered approximately 32 acres. Among the trees affected were white and red pine and Norway spruce, along with mixed hardwoods that in cluded black cherry, white ash and other species. Aerial view of the December 2010 blowdown. Photo: K. Thompson The situation posed a unique regional opportunity to document woodboring and other insects that might uti lize damaged host trees at the site. It was presumed that many different bark and ambrosia beetles (Scolytinae), longhorn beetles (Cerambycidae), metallic woodboring beetles (Buprestidae) and additional families of beetles, as well as other taxa such as the horntails or woodwasps (Family Siricidae), would find this place attractive. Results to date are included in this report. Trap Deployment Two types of traps were used to collect insects at the winddisturbed mixed forest in Hinesburg. On March 12, 2012, five UniTraps were deployed, two in mixed spruce stands and three in mixed hardwood stands (Figure 1). The target species for these traps included ambrosia beetles in the genus Trypodendron, along with other members of the family Scolytinae. In the spruce stands, traps were baited with lineatin pheromone, alphapinene and ethanol. In the hard wood stands, we used a combination of lineatin, ethanol and the “natural lure” of small, cut branches of yellow birch that were bruised and draped with a wire over the traps. -

Authors are responsible for content. 2 In Memorium Dr. Donald Lee Dahlsten Professor of Forest Entomology University of California, Berkeley (December 8, 1933—September 3, 2003) It is with great regret that we announce the passing of our good friend and colleague, Don Dahlsten, on September 3, 2003 at the age of 69. Don died at the Alta Bates Medical Center in Berkeley after a two-year battle with a rare form of skin cancer. Over the course of a 40-year career, Don developed a worldwide reputation as a respected leader in forest entomology and related fields. His research focused on the development of ecologically sensitive methods of managing insects that feed on trees in forest and urban environments. We are all aware of his pioneering work regarding the biological control of eucalyptus psyllids, but Don distinguished himself with research on the population dynamics of bark beetles and the factors that attract their natural enemies. -

In Swaine's catalog (1909) 191 species are recog- nized from America north of Mexico. In Leng's catalog (1920) 383 species are listed, and at present there are about 550 described species from the same territory. This great increase in our knowledge of the family is due nearly entirely to the writings of A. D. Hopkins, J. M. Swaine, and M. W. Blackman. To date, 64 species have been taken in Minnesota, and a number of others doubtless occur. The material upon which this bulletin is based is from the University of Minnesota insect collection, and specimens collected by the writer during the summer of 1936. -
